Either Harry Potter by Brandon Sanderson or The Count of Monte Cristo by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (an idea I had while reading The Prisoner of Heaven)

Hogwarts would teach various creative ways to combine exactly 24 known spells while their entire religious structure, history, and school structure is based around the number 26. Harry Potter would be a prodigy with an unusual innate talent at using spells previously thought underpowered, including the spell Speak with Fuzzy Squirrels, and would discover how to apply it to reptiles, in a reveal that would shake the foundations of magical and taxonomical thought and scholarship, even though he's not really sure how he did it. Voldemort would be a fascist who was trying to conquer the world in order to save it from the planet metaphysically colliding with another world, destroying both. He'd die in book 5, killed by Ron in a dramatic duel, but his sentient journals would clue Hermione in on the *real* solution to the coming apocalypse. Harry Potter would then have to carry the guilt of having accidentally killed Fred during the last battle with Voldemort, while everyone around him thinks Fred died at the hands of Bellatrix. Meanwhile, Dumbledore and Snape would be maneuvering in the background, neither trusting each other, and both suspecting the other of trying to subvert Harry Potter, who has been appearing in their visions constantly. Their bickering would nearly bring the world to utter destruction at the end of book six, and you would have to wait with the cliffhanger while Brandy Sandy writes a new book each for fifteen other series, a hiatus that would last an arduous year and a half before the 678,000 word seventh book is completed.
