Biden does not know what he supports. This isn't just because he knows nothing about TikTok or social media in general, but because he doesn't have opinions until he realizes how they make him look.
This is a fucking terrible idea pushed by ignorant octogenarians who are all too eager to get another Patriot Act in if it means pwning China. People need to actually read the RESTRICT act, it would be an enormous blow to online freedom. This gives the executive branch a ridiculous amount of vaguely defined power over social media apps. Y'all really want people to get twenty years for accessing TikTok on a VPN?
I do love politicians ranting about “unelected bureaucrats” and “big government overreach” whist keep granting them new sweeping & vaguely defined powers
The right's posturing as "populist" and "anti-corporate" is an even sadder larp than their civil libertarian one. All they are doing is applying lib-owning principles to the budget.
I personally don't oppose banning just TikTok but the law they want to pass would take it way too far and ban anything Chinese in general be it games chat apps or anything like that
If it just banned tik tok I would have less of a problem. However it's full of stuff we don't need. However it's a free country and people should be allowed to view what they wish. Tik Tok is awful but people should still be allowed to use it. I take a similar stance to Rand Paul on this. Rands sometimes crazy but he's right on these type of vague bills that give the gov more power.
If we are sacrificing our privacy regardless I’d rather entrust them with those responsible to elected representatives of the electorates with clearly defined boundaries via privacy regulations (rather than unaccountable companies, foreign governments, or rogue agencies).
Asking redditors this question is a bad idea. I want to make a point about how is essentially political suicide for whoever supports this but “the TikTok and Instagram are cringe and bad” crowd have scared me out of it
I don’t think TikTok should be banned, but it’s data harvesting needs to be regulated. They are really good at finding what you like for a reason. Despite what everyone says there is no evidence China is spying on us through TikTok. Proof of that: (do note they say their is cause for concern but that is not enough reason to ban them) https://abcnews.go.com/amp/Technology/evidence-tiktok-national-security-threat-reason-concern-experts/story?id=98149650
Support for it is fueled by Americans’ raging hate boner for China without a full understanding of the bill. VPN usage to access “unauthorized” content is apparently punishable with jail time or something like a 250k fine. No more watching foreign Netflix shows, or TikTok for that matter.
That heinous stuff should be cut. I am not against the ban as a standalone legislation. That is what I thought this poll was on, the approval of a ban of tiktok Sui generis(on its own), not the bill itself.
Absolutely although it doesn’t go nearly far enough on Chinese infiltration we need to nationalize all Chinese property in the US and suspend new immigration
It's not just a TikTok ban, I urge anyone who thinks it is to look further into it. It's massive government overreach
Who is sponsoring the bill
a bunch of centrist dems and random gop senators
Josh Hawley introduced it but it has bipartisan support
Does Biden support it
He supports a ban of TikTok if Chinese investors don’t sell their ownership which realistically won’t happen
Essentially doing the same thing Trump tried in 2020. Except of course trump just went immediately for the ban

I despise TikTok with a passion and would love to see it go away, but I'm going to stick with my principles and oppose such a ban.
Based as fuck. I can respect those who stick to their principles

Oppose, strongly, and I don't even use TikTok If Congress really cares about personal privacy they should follow the EU’s lead
I just saw something where the EU wanted to read through people's private chats so not the best example

I oppose because it f the other stuff in that bill, if it’s passed we will never have privacy ever again
Agreed. Knowing the anti freedom fuckers in Congress on both parties though they will pass it and call it a victory for bipartisanship or something
And then they will spy on all of us through our social media and watch out every move

Honestly you can make the argument that we need to regulate data harvesting for big tech in general
True that should probably happen.

I am no fan of Tik Tok, but it shouldn’t be banned I think.

YouTubers are about to go nuts when they can't advertise VPN number #585737
Yeah it would be funny
It would but the law they are trying to pass has all this extra bullshit we don't need. It should just be banning tiktok and that's it
Yes. TikTok sucks
Read more into it, they're using it as an excuse to pass some particularly heinous stuff along with the ban
That heinous stuff should be cut. I am not against the ban as a standalone legislation. That is what I thought this poll was on, the approval of a ban of tiktok Sui generis(on its own), not the bill itself.
Even the ban of the app itself is pretty authoritarian
I Hate Chinese spyware
Odds are you’re already using American spyware at this point, im much more concerned about my own government restricting me than I am about China
American companies stealing my data good, Chinese companies stealing my data bad.
Absolutely although it doesn’t go nearly far enough on Chinese infiltration we need to nationalize all Chinese property in the US and suspend new immigration
Watch the Jesse Watters/Lindsey Graham interview
I certainly will
