And it's programmed to clean all of it up, which of course is utterly futile because it will never stop leaking while it's on. This is the saddest robot.
"Admitted" isn't as quite as right as "intended", but technically not wrong. Here's some info anyways on one of my favorite pieces of performance art!
["Can't Help Myself" by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu](https://www.guggenheim.org/artwork/34812)
> In this work commissioned for the Guggenheim Museum, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu employ an industrial robot, visual-recognition sensors, and software systems to examine our increasingly automated global reality, one in which territories are controlled mechanically and the relationship between people and machines is rapidly changing. Placed behind clear acrylic walls, their robot has one specific duty, to contain a viscous, deep-red liquid within a predetermined area. When the sensors detect that the fluid has strayed too far, the arm frenetically shovels it back into place, leaving smudges on the ground and splashes on the surrounding walls.
> Sun Yuan & Peng Yu are known for using dark humor to address contentious topics, and the robot’s endless, repetitive dance presents an absurd, Sisyphean view of contemporary issues surrounding migration and sovereignty. However, the bloodstain-like marks that accumulate around it evoke the violence that results from surveilling and guarding border zones. Such visceral associations call attention to the consequences of authoritarianism guided by certain political agendas that seek to draw more borders between places and cultures and to the increasing use of technology to monitor our environment.

True but considering the amount of hamsterhweeling we ourselves in our Daily life and the mundane repetiveness of our lifes this robot isn't sentient about it.
So even tho its a sad representation atleast the robot isn't suffering stress depression and a repetive life plauging its inner self,
To me it is satisfying and the fact it successfully pulls back the paint perfectly and the waves it creates makes it hit the spot even better.
This is how I look like after an exploding diarrhea. Without any emotion. I do the actions but I am not there. I wipe and clean, only to leak more again. My mind in shackles of my body, too tired to do anything other than to repeat the actions. Then I stop for a moment, emotions return. I cry for a while to clear my feelings to return wiping again.
Is is not, actually! Just a reddish liqiuid used as a representation.

Yeah, but did you also know the clocks in Persistence of Memory aren't actually clocks? They're just pigments carefully constructed to look like clocks.
Which isn't to say I'm ungrateful for what you've shared, I just want to say the "This is not a Pipe" effect applies to this artwork too.
Why is this such a big deal to anyone here? What did you think we were looking at? It's just art to evoke a feeling. What difference would it make if it 'needed' that fluid?
And? Thanks for the info, but it doesn't make the piece less interesting. I wonder if you say ackchyually often when appreciating art or were eager to share this info with someone lol
In previous times this was posted, a debate arose whether it was somehow cruel to create a robot whose only purpose is constantly saving its own life. When we realize that that's just an illusion, we can focus undistracted on the art of it, rather than on the ethics.
My favorite thing about this piece is how iconic it became.
Kids are mimicking this sad dance with dustpans on TikTok. The poor robot even became a Halloween costume.
Probably one of the most recognizable pieces of modern art that we have from the past decade. It’s insanely rare to inspire people that permanently these days.
Art installation Created to keep its leaking oil in to keep running. Then it eventually died. Turns out the mechanics didn’t run on oil anyway
Can anyone explain better?
I just told someone else this, it's actually hydraulic fluid that it *does* need. It was designed for the Guggenheim Museum. This famous piece is called "I Can't Help Myself".
If there is any loss of pressure in a hydraulic system the arm wouldn't work. You can't have a hydraulic system that leaks that badly and still have it function. It's just not possible.
Why? The artist admitted it uses servo (electric) motors to function. The reservoir of fake fluid being empty doesn't matter unless it's programmed to turn the motors off when this hypothetical reservoir is empty. But even then, it does not NEED that fluid to function the movements of that arm
Well I understand that now that it was admitted that it wasn't hydraulic at all, I meant theoretically, if it *was* hydraulic, then it would need fluid in the reservoir
Not oil, just liquid.

It's beautiful and terribly sad.
A modern myth of Sisyphus
What do you mean? Does the robot not have some sort of vacuum to clean the fluid?
The fluid is it’s own hydraulic fluid… it’s like watching someone bleed out
#O
And it's programmed to clean all of it up, which of course is utterly futile because it will never stop leaking while it's on. This is the saddest robot.
Yah. It’s sweeping it’s fluid back into itself which it just keeps leaking out.

No, the artist later admitted that the robot runs on servo motors and the hydraulic fluid on the floor is just for show.
Oh. Could it be the artist was trying to invoke empathy for a machine?
If you are interested, I posted some stuff in reply about the art that talks about the artists' intentions.
You've ruined art

Really? Boo. I’m disappointed.
Why bro?
Thank God. That makes me feel better.
Oh my god I’m sad now
That’s not how hydraulics work

That's not what it is, that's what some meme said it was
My ex had syphilis.
Me too bleeding robot arm, me too
This is what we are all doing.
Woah.

Right... poor guy who has to actually clean that shitshow...
This is quite satisfying
It’s quite sad

Zima Blue
Why am I leaking? Why can’t I contain myself?
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
It's called incontinence.
Not that urine is not filtered from blood, but if you leaks blood directly, I think you got bigger issue than piss yourself
That is actually a very cool art installation.
Would love to know the name and artist if anyone knows. Great concept
“Can’t help myself,” by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu.
Damn even the title makes me sad af
ayoo it's the paintbrush robot from wall-e
in his final moments of life
These should be installed in all art galleries so the paint/soup can be cleaned up quickly

Surprise! It runs on servo motors and actually requires zero g̶r̶e̶a̶s̶e̶ oil. That's just for show. Yes, really.

No. That's what it was billed as, but the creator later admitted that it's not needed fluid and it's just for show.

Isn't Bizarrelife all about Art?
Scp
Tryna figure out why this gave me a deep sadness. Then I found the name “can’t help myself” Only broke me a little 🥲
Titled "can't help myself" Absolutely beautiful. This is my favorite art piece to date.

Yeah, I assumed this was just filling a reservoir
So it doesn't need this hydraulic fluid since it's not actually using it to move the arm.
Wouldn't you assume though that I would eventually stop working with a completely empty reservoir? (Asking genuinly)
Why? The artist admitted it uses servo (electric) motors to function. The reservoir of fake fluid being empty doesn't matter unless it's programmed to turn the motors off when this hypothetical reservoir is empty. But even then, it does not NEED that fluid to function the movements of that arm

It is absolutely not hydraulic fluid. Robots such as this run with servos. The fluid is just for show.
Yeah it was originally sold to the public as 'hydraulic fluid' but the artist later admitted that that was just for show

The human "Race".
How long before just stop oil throws paint on it?
i want one of those to clean my house
So glad I got to see this
i kinda like that. i se these machines at work every day, this is pretty poetic
One of the creators describing the process of making this installation. https://youtu.be/T5Nmwf5k7P8
Saw this at the gug. It’s called “I can’t help myself” pretty cool installation
Song?
Damn, even this got hit by stop oil
You're telling me I could have gotten a robot to squeegee all this blood?
Please post a credit to the artist OP. Super not cool this keeps getting reposted with no credit
What did I just watch
Is that a fanuc bot?
Kuka
"The food court will be open in 30 min" They stole it from judge dredd
This is actually cool though. Not something dumb like a guy jumping with a marker in his hand
u/savevideobot
“Guys i have an idea lets make a robot cleaning up fake blood!”
That thing is too damn expensive to be doing this all day
This makes me so sad and I don’t even understand it.
What is my purpose
It's shit
Absolutely outstanding
It uses poop to marke art 💔💔💔
Well, machines arent so different from people. Soon AI gonna be able to code its own feelings. And hydraulic fluid we already all have in common
Shit looks like something straight out of the SCP foundation
What is my purpose?
I really like this piece.
The best part is it screams! It just constantly screams.
Whatever this is, it’s scary!
Just bought it! Can't wait to hang it on my wall! But which wall is the question...?
The piece: trying to keep it together My source is that i made it the fuck up
When I first saw this years ago I cried like a baby.
Looks like an SCP
This makes me feel weird
At least those anti… assholes can’t ruin it with a can of soup.
Made by the same pair of artists that fed dead babies with their blood.
"what is my purpose?" "You squeegee paint around" "Oh my God.." "Yea welcome to the club pal"
Glad to be a Fancy Tube with a job and a cat. Same life sad robot. In the end, the lights go off.
Stupid shit
does it represent the blood of those lost. kinda like how they clean the streets after a violent death.
You do know that this machine is simply cleaning up after a horrific murder.
This one, I like.
Is it modern or is it contemporary?
Criminally insane robot squeegees floor.
This is fucking sick and the artist should be ashamed
Everything gotta be so god damn depressing
This is how I feel about my existence every single day.
If Ultron was real, he’d first save this little guy😭
😒😒😒 no
Music is awful.
