Yeah, but Michael Biehn was kinda the on-par star for T1, not to dismiss Linda Hamilton at all
Sigourney Weaver takes the cake with Alien in '79, T1 came out in '84
I think this is just picking action stars before Hunger Games and Linda Hamilton in T2, jacked as fuck and distilled bad assery definitely counts.
If we’re looking for the earliest, lots of stuff predates Ellen Ripley. Lynda Carter was Wonder Woman before Alien was filmed. Pam Grier was headlining before that. Diana Rigg’s Emma Peel is from the 60s. Google talks about Mary Fuller who was apparently an action star during the age of silent films, but I’ve never seen any of her movies.
Sigourney in Aliens as well. It can be argued that Weaver was kinda a "final girl" type in Alien, but she really wasnt the focus early on in Alien. In Aliens, the was front and center, hands down, the star, and in an amazing oscar nominated performance as well.
IIRC Ripley was also never intended to be a woman, most of the cast wasn't intended to be their particular gender. Just last names were used and men and women auditioned for the parts and they picked who they liked best. So Ripley wasn't even *intended to be* a "final girl" she *just so happened to be* a "final girl". That could be BS though, as I don't have a source to back it up.
Also, fun fact, in Alien canon, Lambert is trans, it literally says so in her biography on screen and able to be seein in the first movie.
As bad ass as Sigourney was, I still think Linda in T2 is one of the most bad ass hard core women of all time.
That awful insane asylum, and the escape? Next level. More afraid of that weirdo licking me than the Alien queen.
Arnie was (obviously) the lead, yet Hamilton managed to own that movie.
This is how the world should be. Not this battle of the sexes, but an amazing synergy.
In Terminator she progressed from a Distressed Damsel to an Action Survivor. In T2 she was a full on Action Hero. Then in Dark Fate she was hunting terminators for sport.
In Alien it was a survive the space horror movie. Ripley didn't get very much off screen time to level up. She was frozen in space, then hospitalized, then working on a loading dock. She didn't get trained in using a weapon til halfway through Aliens when she was flirting with Hicks. She caught up fast though.
> As bad ass as Sigourney was, I still think Linda in T2 is one of the most bad ass hard core women of all time
One shoulder stitched together, one pierced by a metal rod, shot in the leg, and survived two car crashes. Can still one handed rack the 12 gauge pump.
Not exactly on topic, but that movie makes me cry like a little girl every time because Linda Hamilton looks so much like my mom did, especially when she gets all geared up to go kill Miles Dyson. The tank top and pony tail with the cap and cargo pants is the exact outfit my mom would wear when we were out clearing land when I was a teen.
She passed away when I was 17 and I have never been able to watch that movie since without bursting into tears.
Yeah in T1 but her character was so badass in T2, Linda Hamilton trained hard and it showed. It added so much to her character. Sigourney Weaver chucking that alien queen into an airlock also very much badass and she saves the cat in the end.
There was also this western movie I saw but can't remember the name. I believe it was about a girl who grew up to be a gunslinger to get revenge on the outlaw that killed her father, and the outlaw was the head of a town or something like that. I think I'm remembering that right. It's been a long time.
Michelle Yeoh was the lead role in Yes, Madam! in 1985. She was doing her own stunts and dropping bodies within the first 5 minutes! All-around badass.
Y'all forgot Cynthia Rothchild she came from a competitive background before being in movies and was a champion. The movies she's in are lower budget but have some of the best stunt and fight choreography for the time.
Pretty sure you're talking about [Cynthia Rothrock.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynthia_Rothrock) Cynthia Rothschild is [very much not an actor.](https://creaworld.org/staff-member/cynthia-rothschild/)
yeah iirc she got destroyed so thoroughly she mea culpa'd, to her credit. To her point though, there was a boom of female lead blockbusters, including Katniss ripoffs across all media, especially video games. It WAS a big deal, but she overstated it in a way that egregiously erased all the legendary women that pave the path for her.
She later said "That’s certainly not what I meant to say at all. I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film. What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels. And I meant that with Viola — to blow past these old myths that you hear about … about the chatter that you would hear around that kind of thing. But it was my blunder and it came out wrong. I had nerves talking to a living legend.”
>"What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels. And I meant that with Viola — to blow past these old myths that you hear about … about the chatter that you would hear around that kind of thing. But it was my blunder and it came out wrong. I had nerves talking to a living legend."
Looks like she clarified the statement, but I'm not sure if I 100% understand what she was going for
I realize this gets thrown around a lot about Al Gore, but he was actually one of the critical parties involved in creation of the internet as we know it.
I could forgive most of it.
Not using the goddamn varia suit to not die from heat because senpai hadn't given her permission yet is the single stupidest thing to ever happen in a video game.
There was also a part where you're being blasted by these dudes behind glass from all sides and you have to wait until papa gives you his blessing to use your wave beam. It's just mind-bogglingly dumb.
At least with that I felt like it made the suit seem kind of badass. It's too powerful to use even the most basic power up with normies nearby. Ok, I guess. But straight up letting herself die rather than turn on the suit with the AC was the line for me.
Headcanon excuse is that her crap is actually hard limited remotely, out of her control. She too is *really pissed* that they were limiting her suit while she was dying of heat/lack of missiles.
When she loses contact, her remote limiters are disabled, she can just go "Eh, fuck it." and enable it herself at her leisure (but doesn't want to wind up in hot water for enabling too much if she regains contact). It helps that in other games, she otherwise loses her stuff, and command is heavily reduced/cut entirely, so she needs to get it back, and there's no remote limiter forcing her hand otherwise.
It also isn't even accurate, the character wasn't on the cover "for breaking gender stereotypes in games", it was just because she had become a very popular character who garnered mass appeal
*"In this special edition of the publication, the outlet discusses how Aloy quickly rose to become an iconic, and fan favourite protagonist - due in large part to how her design transcends the often less-realistic depiction of women in games."*
redditors are so gullible and stupid
I don’t know why people have this weird obsession of hating on Aloy from Horizon. I thought she was a pretty cool character and didn’t feel like she was pushed as a “break gender stereotypes” statistic.
It's the same reason every popular popular thing has haters. Inevitably there will be people who think the popularity is overblown and some of those people will poke holes.
And, of course, there's always people who are just plain contrarians who have no opinion of their own, but will pretend to have the opposite opinion of whatever's popular.
Do people not get that stereotypes aren't definitive and change over time? Stereotypes can be made *after* someone has broken the stereotype, so someone down the line can also break the stereotypes. That's fine. It's not some massive one-and-done occurrence.
FYI, the text above the cover is completely made up. This isn't the headline of an article that I could find, the first result looking for this with "stereotype" is literally just the ifunny post of this meme.
The actual article doesn't seem to assert Alloy is the first of anything, just that she's a good example of a good female character.
The meme is manufactured controversy/circle jerking.
To be fair back when metroid came out nintendo wanted samus' gender to be a secret so they used he instead of her which made the under an hour ending of NES metroid a shocker
I learned Samus was female in Super Smash Bros. If she got shocked by Pikachu and you paused at the right time, the armor would disappear and it was just a silhouette of a woman's figure.
It was a big deal to little old me when the helmet came off. I remember thinking how crazy it was she was female after putting so many hours into the game and assuming Samus was male.
I haven’t read the article but I’m assuming it’s just because she’s the main female protagonist of one of the most popular current gen video games at the moment. No one said she’s the first ever woman to be the star of a video game, or that she’s a groundbreaking feminist icon. Or at least that’s how I see it.
I have read the article and you are correct. The article is about the main female protagonist of one of the most popular current-gen video games at the moment. The article does not say she's the first ever woman to be the star of a video game, or a groundbreaking feminist icon. It's about the character and why she's popular, and one reason mentioned is that she isn't a stereotypical hot video game character.
In regards to the Samus example being used, Alloy doesn’t hide her face/figure. Samus is, essentially, the same as Master Chief or Doom Guy. A suited-up ass-kicker, covered head to toe in high-tech battle armor that effectively renders them personality-less. I know, I know, Samus has a *lot* of personality, but just *looking* at Samus you can’t outright tell anything about her other than they’re a sci-fi ass-kicker.
Characters like Alloy, Lara Croft, Bayonetta, etc, have their faces and personality “visible”. Looking at Alloy you can instantly tell she’s a badass survivalist who has obviously been through a lot and is physically intimidating to stare down. And that’s specific to Alloy, whereas with Samus and her armor you could (theoretically) switch characters in the armor and no one would be the wiser. You can’t swap Lara Croft for another character, but you could change who is in armor (Master Chief could have been Carrottop the whole god damn time and we would never know) and it doesn’t really effect much.
Yup.
She was a character in Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi!
Man that one takes me back.....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Masters_of_Ter%C3%A4s_K%C3%A4si
I’d take points off Kerrigan for always being in a skin tight catsuit, or some how evolving a bikini and heels in her zerg form, or whatever the hell Xelrrigan looks like.
Overmind- Cerebrate! Why do all the Zerg not have huge mouth watering TITS as your overmind I demand the feeling of being horny! Create a Zerg being capable of such a feet
Cerebrate- don’t worry master I’ve got the perfect idea 😈
Seeing her go absolutely Doomslayer in Dread made me wish that game had a Zero Suit scene that only lasts for like three seconds and shows that she is, in fact, JACKED AS FUCK
Somebody ripped the Zero suit model they made for her in Dread that you see whenever you die, and [she's way more muscular than we've usually seen her](https://i.redd.it/703mbsun01y71.jpg), so that's cool.
Probably because her [Power suit in Dread](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E39g_uKWEAEV38f.jpg) gives the impression that it has raised heels as well, not just her Zero suit. At least, that's what it looks like to me.
Mechanically I can't remember a reason why the suit would have raised heels. I'm pretty sure her rocket boosters are on her back and I don't think there was any other gadget that might've been in the heels of her boots.
Edit: I finished the comment and then realized the outer power suit would have to fit to match what she was was wearing underneath. It's the Zero suit that has boosters in the heel, at least it does in one of the Smash Bros games, I'm not sure if that's an official thing.
I wouldn't want to have bare skin pressed against the inside of the armor, either. A skin-tight jumpsuit just makes sense. Hell, dudes wore nylons under their boots in the Army for long road marches to help prevent blisters, and have you seen the "combat shirts" that were designed for wear under body armor? They don't leave a whole lot to the imagination, male *or* female.
To be fair tho, Samus may have been unexpected but she was still a tall, leggy blonde. Later incarnations she's even smoking hot wearing a skin-tight jumpsuit which leaves little to the imagination.
And in the very first game, Metroid, there's an ending you can unlock that shows her in a bikini -- a trend they followed to some degree for a few of the later games.
Samus is awesome, but they've largely treated her like some waifu.
Is Ms. PAC-MAN a joke to you?
She's more of a sex symbol if you ask me.
I’m not denying that
I fully embracing it rn now just thinking about her. That curve... mouth like a boa constrictor...mmmmmmmmmmmhmmmm
Waka waka waka waka
One more waka and I'm ghosting you.
Waka
You just got that guy ghosted. Why?
Rule 34 suggests there is Ms CPAC Man and a green Eminem in coitus somewhere on the internet
What a terrible day to be literate
I hate you, now I will have to search for that and I will likely regret it
>Ms CPAC Man ew
>green Eminem "Marshall SMASH!"
A joke which not a lot of people are going to like, because it's not that good.
Jennifer Lawrence paved the way for Samus.
holy shit when jLaw said that she was the first true female action star, what a clusterfuck
Holy shit, she said this?
>I remember when I was doing 'Hunger Games,' nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work Her words
What a way to find out Angelina Jolie has been a man this entire time.
Sigourney weaver in alien in 79 would like a word.
Sarah Connor, as well.
Yeah, but Michael Biehn was kinda the on-par star for T1, not to dismiss Linda Hamilton at all Sigourney Weaver takes the cake with Alien in '79, T1 came out in '84

Ugh, Pam Grier, now that was a definitely a crush of my youth. Jackie brown is so bad ass.
Michelle Yeoh is actually just a figment of all our imaginations
Sigourney in Aliens as well. It can be argued that Weaver was kinda a "final girl" type in Alien, but she really wasnt the focus early on in Alien. In Aliens, the was front and center, hands down, the star, and in an amazing oscar nominated performance as well.
"Alien is a movie where nobody listens to the smart woman, and then they all die except for the smart woman and her cat. Four stars."
I think the argument could be made that Alien was a horror movie, whereas Aliens is an action movie, which also backs your claim
GET AWAY FROM HER, YOU BITCH!!!
Red Sonya…Grace Jones in Conan and there was a whole supergirl movie
It can be said that horror paved the way for action girls for more reasons than Alien.
IIRC Ripley was also never intended to be a woman, most of the cast wasn't intended to be their particular gender. Ironically, Sigourney Weaver rescues Michael Beihn's ass in Aliens (1986). Don't fuck with Ripley!
As bad ass as Sigourney was, I still think Linda in T2 is one of the most bad ass hard core women of all time. That awful insane asylum, and the escape? Next level. More afraid of that weirdo licking me than the Alien queen.

Pam Grier, also.
Nintendo have explicitly said Metroid was inspired by Alien too. Ridley is named after Ridley Scott.

The quick and the Dead
Great movie.
Fucking Jackie Brown. Also Nikita.
>The quick and the Dead OMG, I remember that movie. Thanks for the reminder, I must watch this again.
After that, watch 3:10 to Yuma with Crowe and Bale. Fucking perfection.
Run, don't walk, to go re watch it. It's such a good underrated movie. Star studded, great acting, good story, very quotable. It has it all.
Yeah, Sharon stone, gene hackman, Leo DiCaprio, Russell crowe.
Lance Henriksen, Keith David, and Gary Sinise plays a small part. Also, directed by Sam Raimi.

Barbarella '68 too.
Not a single person in the world watched Barbarella because it was an "action movie".
But because it was a boobie movie
Duran Duran
And Kate Beckinsdale. And Uma Thurman. And Sigourney Weaver. ....
Great calls. To add: Michelle Yeoh Charlize Theron
Michelle Yeoh was the lead role in Yes, Madam! in 1985. She was doing her own stunts and dropping bodies within the first 5 minutes! All-around badass.
Ok I'm saving this thread now, I have a bunch of films to watch, or watch again.
She's also in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." One of the best martial arts movies ever made.
Y'all forgot Cynthia Rothchild she came from a competitive background before being in movies and was a champion. The movies she's in are lower budget but have some of the best stunt and fight choreography for the time.

Uma Thurman draws her Hanzo sword.
Sigourney weaver would like to have a word
yeah iirc she got destroyed so thoroughly she mea culpa'd, to her credit. To her point though, there was a boom of female lead blockbusters, including Katniss ripoffs across all media, especially video games. It WAS a big deal, but she overstated it in a way that egregiously erased all the legendary women that pave the path for her.
[Knuckles the Echidna](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWBn0nS8s0A) had the perfect summarization of what you describe.
Sonic Boom is filled with fantastic dialogue like this. What a great show.
I just found out about it like a month ago when my son (3yo) found it on Netflix. I love it more than he does.
Yo... WHAT!?! that was amazing
She later said "That’s certainly not what I meant to say at all. I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film. What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels. Hay, at least she admitted fault. Better than plenty of others.

I’ve always loved the alien movies. Pretty sure those are more action movie then hunger games.
The sequels for sure. First one is a horror movie.
She invented the bow and arrow as well
Don't forget that she co-invented the internet with Al Gore
I realize this gets thrown around a lot about Al Gore, but he was actually one of the critical parties involved in creation of the internet as we know it.
So brave

Tbh, you could put up a picture of any blonde video game lady with a ponytail and convince people it's zero suit Samus from a new game
Then put her in full armor. Break norms of conventional beauty! That armor is gorgeous! Be better Vanity Fair!
Forget Vanity Fair, Samus should do a cover shoot for Varia-ty.
Just make sure you do it quick while she’s in her Prime
I think that Wii Metroid game set her back a couple decades. Yeesh. They turned her into a petulant waifu.
I could forgive most of it. Not using the goddamn varia suit to not die from heat because senpai hadn't given her permission yet is the single stupidest thing to ever happen in a video game.

Not even the suit. He had to "allow" her the use of fucking missiles. That's like the earliest upgrade in every Metroid game God damn, fuck that game.
At least with that I felt like it made the suit seem kind of badass. It's too powerful to use even the most basic power up with normies nearby. Ok, I guess. But straight up letting herself die rather than turn on the suit with the AC was the line for me.

Exactly. I cringe so hard seeing a post like this get 70,000(!) upvotes
The average non-gamer has no idea Samus is female and probably thinks her name is Metroid kind of like the whole Link/Zelda thing.
If they are non-gamers they probably have no idea who Aloy is.

I learned Samus was female in Super Smash Bros. If she got shocked by Pikachu and you paused at the right time, the armor would disappear and it was just a silhouette of a woman's figure.
This is exactly how I found out too. I never played the Metroid games before this and thought Samus was a robot or something.

Sad Joanne from Perfect Dark noise
I’d take points off Kerrigan for always being in a skin tight catsuit, or some how evolving a bikini and heels in her zerg form, or whatever the hell Xelrrigan looks like.
Overmind- Cerebrate! Why do all the Zerg not have huge mouth watering TITS as your overmind I demand the feeling of being horny! Create a Zerg being capable of such a feet Cerebrate- don’t worry master I’ve got the perfect idea 😈
Problem with Samus is that every time she steps out of the armor she's an underwear model.
Seeing her go absolutely Doomslayer in Dread made me wish that game had a Zero Suit scene that only lasts for like three seconds and shows that she is, in fact, JACKED AS FUCK
"Local woman literally too angry to die."
It's funny how similar Doom 2016 is to the Metroid Prime franchise when you think about it.
Somebody ripped the Zero suit model they made for her in Dread that you see whenever you die, and [she's way more muscular than we've usually seen her](https://i.redd.it/703mbsun01y71.jpg), so that's cool.
Interesting that they still put her in high heels tho
Combat wedges!
Raiden!!!
My headcanon is that is what happens when you're trying to fit into a suit of armor made for sentient birds.

Magic
Of the bird variety
It's for... uh... more control and support in the suit! Yeah that's it. And you can't deny it cause YOU don't know how alien tech works
They don't leave a whole lot to the imagination, male *or* female.
halo spartans are in a second skin suit under their armor. take off the plates and i assume it would look just like hers just not as colorful
Yep. Super Soldier or not, that shit chaffs and causes blisters.
To be fair, Samus's appearance post-Super has generally been "supermodel" fit rather than "bodybuilder/bounty hunter" fit.
