Click on the MetaMask icon in the upper right corner of your web browser.

Click on your profile icon in the upper right corner, then go to Settings > Advanced.
Scroll down to Use Ledger Live.
Click on the toggle to enable the Ledger Live bridge.
Click on your profile icon, then select Connect Hardware Wallet.
Select Ledger, then click on Connect.
An Open Ledger Live? window appears.
Click Open Ledger Live.
Once Ledger Live opens, an Open Device Bridge window appears. You are asked to allow a Websocket connection to your MetaMask account.
Click Open.
Thank you! Unfortunately it works on Windows 10, but not Linux Debian. I had to create a new wallet on Windows and install Ledger Live that just so that I can connect Ledger Nano X there.
On Linux Debian, when "Open Ledger Live?" window appears and get clicked "Open Ledger Live", it doesn't do anything. They need to fix this on the Linux side of things
Fiorst, you are not screwed. Your crypto is not in your ledger, it is on the blockchains, and there are numerous way to gain back access to it, without using your ledger, provided that you have your seed phrase.
Of course entering your seed phrase is a software or phone wallet defeats the safety offered by the ledger device, but at least you can easily regain access to all your cryptos.
And there is normally no issue connecting MetaMask to the Ledger, using Chrome. If you cannot connect directly, you can configure MM to use the ledger live bridge to communicate with the ledger (you will need the latest version of Ledger Live for this to work). On My Win 10 system, Chrome 92 allows the latest version of MM to communicate directly with my Nano X without having to use the Ledger Live bridge.
