I was in a really bad car wreck in 2019. My right tibia and knee were shattered. I had a series of surgeries to put back together the leg and save it, but ended up with infection and dying tissue, and eventually had to agree to an above the knee amputation.

Sorry to hear. I got in a small fender bender a month ago and it absolutely scared the shit out of me. Nobody was hurt but since that moment it’s really put into place in my mind how important safety is, especially when operating a 2500lbs box that goes 60+mph.

Yes, I'm glad you're ok. A lot of people don't realize they're operating a lethal weapon. My accident was caused by a drunk driver. I had a really hard time accepting the loss of my leg for a while and was bitter, but eventually, I put things in perspective and value most of all the fact that I survived at all. Unfortunately, this crap can happen to anyone, I definitely never imagined something like this happening to me. Stay safe, and hope everyone behaves more responsibly behind the wheel.

So… I’m a prosthetist. We don’t go nearly as extreme as yours has for our casts. We make stockinette shorts but you can stay dressed on top and keep your undies on. We just make elastic suspenders to hold up the shorts nice and snug…. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Interesting! So I guess this was a bit unusual. I had castings where I was able to keep my shirt and underwear. This was a first that they recommended to remove everything. I'm in Europe, btw, so it's possible it's a more common practice here? I'm guessing you're in US?

The prosthetic limbs cost an arm and a leg, but I'm good at barganing and got a great deal.

Do you have different prosthetics for different types of activities?

At the moment, I only have 1 prosthetic leg. It's good for day-to-day walking, going up/down stairs, but I can't do sports, or swim, or run with it. There are more durable knee units for sports that can withstand much more pressure, also there are blade foot components for running. I hope to get something like this in the future and try running again. Also, there are special legs for water activities. I've gotten used to swimming without a prosthesis, but getting into the pool or water at the beach can be quite challenging. I typically get help from someone.

Well, I hope you get to try out different types once you decide what you might want to get involved in!

Yes, there are many options, but unfortunately they're all very expensive. So I'm trying to save up for it now, but for sure, I hope to be able to do more active things in the future.

I have to thank my rehabilitation therapist. She really pushed me to do regular exercises daily and swimming. This helped me to stay in shape, but also to pull me out of depression.

This is a dumb question, but do you have to wear that every single time you wear your prosthetic? Or are those bandages temporarily

No, the bandages were the casting process only to get an exact mold. It's quite a messy procedure, and it has to be precise. But to wear the prosthetic leg, I just have to put on the liner each time (it's a silicone soft cover that I put over my stump). I'm actually wearing it in the photo, it's underneath the stockinette "bandages" since the fitting has to take into account that the socket of the prosthesis will fit over the liner. The liner is needed to create a vacuum seal, so that the prosthetic leg stays on.

This is a general question, does it hurt to put weight on the amputated limb for prolonged time? I wasn’t sure how they go about distributing the weight, since it seems like a relatively small area would be receiving a lot of body weight

Yes, it actually hurts to put any weight on it, since the femur is cut and there's not that much soft tissue to protect it. The way the prosthetic leg socket works, the weight is actually distributed evenly along the sides of the stump, but not the bottom. In fact, there's even a bit of empty space between the bottom of my stump and the socket, but I feel pressure from all sides, and it's a very tight vacuum seal.
