When Westfield took over ownership there was already a Westfield Garden City in QLD (I think) hence the name change
Edit: ah someone already said below
Ohhhhhh that's what Westfield Booragoon is. I was wondering why they'd build a new shopping centre in Booragoon when that would be so close to garden city.
When they changed the name, someone said it was because there's Westfield Garden City in Brisbane already. Then the Brisbane one changed their name as well
My partner came to Aus after this change and calls its water town. ITS HARBOUR TOWN!! HARBOUR. TOWN.I refuse to accept its updated name. She doesn't understand :(
I only go there very occasionally. I'd convinced myself that it must have always been Watertown, and I was just misremembering it.
It's weird because it's not particularly close to water or a harbour.
It’s funny how Subiaco council bitched and moaned about the stadium so fucking much and the moment they moved it they cried they didn’t want it to move. The Subiaco strip is basically a ghost town now.
I find it hard to have sympathy for the WAFC trying to sell naming rights to a stadium they didn't own. It seems unlikely that a Pattersons sign would have prevented the building of the Perth Stadium.
I drove past the site yesterday and couldn't for the life of me remember the last official name. I knew they had sold naming rights, but couldn't remember to whom.
it's on the event website but that's it, in every other way it is still absolutely called greater union. i think they don't want to tarnish the event brand with it.
Chevron owns the brand name Caltex. Caltex owns the brand Ampol. Chevron bought Puma and rebranded it Caltex, Caltex offloaded it’s Woolworths petrol satiations to EQ and rebranded it’s own stores to Ampol. Nothing confusing there.
I think that was so if the sponsorship changes Transperth don't have to change all the signs. Pretty good forward thinking really, even if it is currently a bit confusing.
C.A.L.M to D.E.C. to DBCA to dbca services all within 15yrs
Edit:.. oops how can I forget the I am DPAW (Pronounced DePoor) lol thankyou or the reminder
I still regularly call it calm, and most companies we deal with still have Calm accounts versus new name.of
My mother still calls Myer "Boans" sometimes, and my father loves making jokes about going to "Boans Innaloo" aka Skeleton in the Toilet, even though any Boans/Myer that once existed in Innaloo has long gone.
The pizza shop under the ramp to the rooftop carpack there?
That's what I miss the most :(
You could watch them toss and spin the pizzas as they made them - as a kid that was just so awesome!
This was before delivery and when the few Pizza Huts were sit down restaurants.
The wanted to change to the bureau but never got the Twitter handlers for anything close to that. The whole thing reads like some exc had an idea and forced an intern to do it by the end of the week.
I thought it read like it was something someone told an ABC reporter at some point and it got blown out of all proportion. I don't think anyone else really said much about it besides them?
Not me, but when the new IGA took over Dewsons in Craigie about 25 years ago, my mother kept on calling it Dewsons for what seemed like 10 years after the fact.
Dad used to refer to the old Action / Dewsons / Rules / Cheap Foods / Charlie Carters on Canning Rd Kalamunda as “Charlie Carters” until it was demolished and replaced by the new Woolies
Funny you mention Action.
Our local IGA closed down for renovations. Or maybe semi-permanently before its reopening. Either way, the IGA signs above the storefront got pulled down... revealing the old Action signs they just stuck the IGA signs over. Was like that for a good while, too until the IGA signs got out back up and it reopened.
Same with that Queens park one. I moved to Perth 16 years ago and it wasn’t dewsons then but my wife’s family all called it that so it’s still called that.
the old timeout packaging is iconinc. I cant complain though, I thought timeouts were gone forever for like a whole year and then found out they just got rebranded so im just glad to have em. Theyre the best choccy.
I refuse to use the cringe names of menu items at all these garish Instagram joints.
If I can’t avoid eating at the place all together, I struggle to bring myself to say some of this garbage out loud - “Notorious Big Poppa Yeezy burger w/ Gucci fries”? Nah I’ll take the chicken burger and chips thanks.
… and No, I’m not fun at parties.
Grew up with Safeway in Vic.
Moved to QLD as transition to Woolworths.
Took years to call it woollies. Moved back to Vic where it was still mostly Safeways.
Then transitioned to Woollies so I just gave up and went to Coles.
Same here. Always wanted to know what happened to AMF when my local changed to Zone. Though it was a different company but upon research, nope, just a name change.
Not specific to Perth, but the BOM wants to be called "the Bureau"
Firstly, the app is still called BOM weather. Second, we already have the Australian Bureau of Statistics so that would just be confusing
I still call the Good Grocer IGA, and many of the ones in my area that I remember from years ago I still call the old names like Supa Valu or Food Land.
Westfield Booragoon. It’s Garden City, and always will be.
Everyone I know still calls it Garden City.
Garbo.
You mean Garbo’s?
This. It will never not be Garbo to me. Same goes for Harbour Town (Watertown gtfo).
TIL it's actually called Westfield Booragoon
When Westfield took over ownership there was already a Westfield Garden City in QLD (I think) hence the name change Edit: ah someone already said below
boogaroon
Westfield Bonnie Doon
Ohhhhhh that's what Westfield Booragoon is. I was wondering why they'd build a new shopping centre in Booragoon when that would be so close to garden city.
Google still knows where to go when I ask for directions to garden city.
When they changed the name, someone said it was because there's Westfield Garden City in Brisbane already. Then the Brisbane one changed their name as well
Never even knew it changed its name and I go at least once a month!!!
Kinda boring, but I never remember that Harbour Town is now Watertown.
Watered Down
And neither near the harbour or water
There is a shitty water fountain in front that never seems to be turned on.... Also when it rains you get wet.
It was bought by a Chinese owned corporation who renamed it Watertown for better feng shui
I'm the same. I don't even intentially call it the wrong name. I think its because both are aquatic names.
I call it Dripsville now
I had an argument with someone the other day about this. They got oddly serious about how it's not Harbour Town and I shouldn't call it that. 😂
Fellas is it wrong to deadname a shopping precinct?
When Subiaco Oval changed to Pattersons Stadium. Will forever be known as Subi l.
It was kind of funny how the Subiaco council kept denying them planning permission to put up signs with the new name.
I think it might have been domain stadium after Patersons
And now it's where Bob Hawke College hangs out for lunch. Bizarre, but happy to see the area still getting used.
Burswood Cas, Observation City, Harbour Town.
Oh yes, definitely Observation City
Didn't even realise it's now called Rendezvous Hotel.
Hasn't it been the rendezvous for like 20 years?
Yeah, probably. I’m just a lot more than 20 years old 😂
On the bright side, the marketing when it got renamed taught me to pronounce rendezvous.
The Forbidden Quarter Pipe will forever be the Telecom Building. I won't hear otherwise.
Never heard the term forbidden quarter pipe, but I knew exactly what building you were talking about, love it
AQWA is underwater world.
I think I've always just called it the aquarium
True - but you can’t deny that AQWA coming from AQuariuam of WA is a pretty amazing portmanteau
The Bankwest Building
You mean the R&I Building
You mean bond tower.
I hate that I remember this
I know it by all three, but don't know what it's called now
Wankbest building
Bondy's d*ck
South32
WankBest
The Morley and Innaloo cinemas will always be Greater Union to me.
That's was my go to when I had a Gold Pass in 1995. Unlimited movies. Even won a Free ticket with that promo. 🤣
Isn’t Morley still Greater Union?
It's... kinda both? [https://www.eventcinemas.com.au/Cinema/Morley](https://www.eventcinemas.com.au/Cinema/Morley)
it's on the event website but that's it, in every other way it is still absolutely called greater union. i think they don't want to tarnish the event brand with it.
Betts…. It’s Betts n Betts people
Like how Thingz used to be called Thingz Gift.
What ever happened to Granny Mays?
Is Thingz still a thing? I haven't seen one in years.
Yes, Thingz is still a thing.
Our local Ampol became a Caltex. By the time I got used to it being Caltex it reverted back Ampol
And now, to confuse you further, Chevron has started using the Caltex brand on its servos.
And taking over all the pumas
The one on Waneroo Rd in Westminster got rebranded to Ampol and the sign across the road was still an ad for Caltex for months
Perth Stadium and Perth Arena.
I call it RAC-arena like “eyyyyyy Racarena”
Me too! I wince randomly sang this in the car as my wife drove past on the freeway and now we can’t go back.
Entertainment Centre.
I call it the Entertainment Centre, even though that had already been closed for years when I moved to Perth.
Ent Cent
It doesn't help how transperth lists it as Perth stadium
Some of the staff still call the station Belmont Park
Don’t want to rename the station every time the owner of naming rights changes
I think that was so if the sponsorship changes Transperth don't have to change all the signs. Pretty good forward thinking really, even if it is currently a bit confusing.
Similar: The Superdrome. Not HBF Stadium, not even Challenge Stadium. Just the Superdrome.
I still call it Perth Arena, because of syllables, but Perth Stadium is too many, it's just Optus
C.A.L.M to D.E.C. to DBCA to dbca services all within 15yrs Edit:.. oops how can I forget the I am DPAW (Pronounced DePoor) lol thankyou or the reminder I still regularly call it calm, and most companies we deal with still have Calm accounts versus new name.of
Don’t forget DPAW!
I still say DPAW. Just has a better ring to it than the current name.
The volunteer and career fire agency(s) have changed names almost as much over that time, too.
I still call them FESA all the time.
We call them Doofus now. For obvious reasons.
Their social media accounts are pretty funny, I must admit
My mother often says Aherns instead of David Jones. I was probably still in primary school when they closed - late 90s?
My mother still calls Myer "Boans" sometimes, and my father loves making jokes about going to "Boans Innaloo" aka Skeleton in the Toilet, even though any Boans/Myer that once existed in Innaloo has long gone.
The pizza shop under the ramp to the rooftop carpack there? That's what I miss the most :( You could watch them toss and spin the pizzas as they made them - as a kid that was just so awesome! This was before delivery and when the few Pizza Huts were sit down restaurants.
Challenge Stadium (our worst venue for big international acts too)
The Superdrome
“Tasty sticks” twiggy sticks damn you!
This one pisses me off. Wtf is tasty sticks
When the fuck did this happen?
Burswood Casino
It will forever just be "the cas"
BOM
They actually changed back because people didn’t like it. So they wanted to be called The Bureau for about a week, and then went back to BOM
The bureau of bom
BOB?
Anything but HBF park for where the glory play. There's like three HBF sports places in Perth like that's confusing af
Perth Oval forever
NIB
Gilmore College will always be Kwinana SHS
And Kwinana Marketplace will always be the Hub
Darling Range Sports College is the same, try as they might it's still Forrestfield SHS at it's heart
Coke Zero
Esplanade station wtf elizabeth quay station. Wellington Bus station not busport. Busport is the one at esplanade.
Barbagallo is a much cooler name than Wanneroo Raceway, anyway.
Also way better than Carco Raceway, will always be barbs to me I think
Carco Raceway is awful!
Holy shit I thought they were 2 different ones.
It's like the freeway, give it two different names and pretend Perth's big enough to have two
Not me, but when the new IGA took over Dewsons in Craigie about 25 years ago, my mother kept on calling it Dewsons for what seemed like 10 years after the fact.
Dad used to refer to the old Action / Dewsons / Rules / Cheap Foods / Charlie Carters on Canning Rd Kalamunda as “Charlie Carters” until it was demolished and replaced by the new Woolies

Same with that Queens park one. I moved to Perth 16 years ago and it wasn’t dewsons then but my wife’s family all called it that so it’s still called that.
My mum still called the Busselton 'Progressive Super IGA' "Action" for literally the entire 15-20 years it existed before Coles took it over.
Supa Valu!
Waterford Plaza is still Karawarra to me
I still have to think a second when high school students say ATAR instead of TEE/TER
I think the official thing to call it for those who graduated before 2010 is ‘TEE or whatever they call it now, the high school exam thing’.
That is legit word for word what I say
Centro Mandurah will always be The Forum
The Centro name has been gone for close to a decade now... it reverted back to Mandurah Forum a long time ago.
Perth Arena, Perth Stadium, Harbour Town, and Garden City.
Timeout. Always was, always will be. Twirl Breakaway it is not.
Twirl Breakaway is a Timeout?
the old timeout packaging is iconinc. I cant complain though, I thought timeouts were gone forever for like a whole year and then found out they just got rebranded so im just glad to have em. Theyre the best choccy.
I had totally forgotten about time outs 😫

Garden city. I refuse to say it’s new name. It’s disgraceful to garden city goers all around.
Dewsons which is now like the igas
It’ll always be Gozzy High… never Southern River College.
ST-ST-ST-STAMMERS! It will never be a woolworths to me
I still have my green checkout chick uniform and apron somewhere!
Grew up with Safeway in Vic. Moved to QLD as transition to Woolworths. Took years to call it woollies. Moved back to Vic where it was still mostly Safeways. Then transitioned to Woollies so I just gave up and went to Coles.
I still call the lemon drink Pinto instead of Solo
Garden City

AMF bowling. Not timezone. It will always be AMF bowling.
You mean Zone bowling?
That’s how ingrained AMF is. I don’t know what it’s called now lol
Same here. Always wanted to know what happened to AMF when my local changed to Zone. Though it was a different company but upon research, nope, just a name change.
For the oldies … R&I tower
You mean Bond Tower.
That's what came to me first. Or MTT bus

"Mineral Resources Park" will forever be Lathlain Park, home of the Mighty Demons, to me.
