All ticks are dangerous, make certain you don't miss a single one, & that they are removed entirely (including the head). This should have been made clear to everyone by TAFE, wtf is up with that?
They would have been told to wear appropriate attire and that risk involved. I’m assuming the OP is doing a horticultural course or something similar based out of Joondalup Campus.
Someone in that line of work is going to deal with ticks in their professional life, no need to stress the OP out over pepper ticks which are fairly innocuous.
I’d be more worried about the FUCKLOADS of Dugites that hang around that area.
Thank you for replying, they warned us of them but didn't clarify the risk, luckily these ones are able to be removed with fingernails but they have an itchy bite i was wondering if i would feel the effects within 4 hours of when i will be able to shower and remove every single one i have stripped and removed dozens however every half hour i find more and more
Removing ticks in Australia can still cause the same illnesses as in America they're currently doing research on it here in WA but those same diseases have been found in ticks over east, including people getting mammalian meat allergy from incorrect removal.
There’s is very little risk of illness from ticks based illnesses in WA.
This is scare mongering, there is risks when you deal with any kind of pest and people working in the elements have to deal with this on a daily basis. That doesn’t mean you drop everything at the drop of a hat and go to the GP.
If you notice complications, you go to the doc. It’s not difficult to remove pepper ticks by yourself.
I would advice in general removing them using your fingers. Hand sanitiser (or other high-alcohol content liquid) seems to work quite well from my experience.
Just to ease your mind a bit, ticks are not as dangerous here as they can be in other places. In general they will be fine as long as you remove them. You can visit the [Health Australia Website](https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/dscatt/about) page about them for more information.
Sounds like pepper ticks (i.e. baby ticks) that would've hatched after the recent rain.
Insect repellent (such as Bushman or Aeroguard in a spray can) is great for preventing them & adult ticks coming onto you; spray it on your ankles & wrists & avoid brushing against plants most times you'll be tick free.
If you've got pepper ticks on you now, spray yourself with the insect repellent. It doesn't need to be much, a few 1 second sprays will get them walking. Do it before you shower & they'll go down the drain. Spray your clothes/car etc & leave them away from the house.
I’ve had a few pepper tick bites, I remove with a tweezer gently. But if it goes red and you have lines leading out then you have to see a doctor. I’ve only had this once.
You’ll be itchy for a few days.
Anecdotal of course but I once got one at the cemetery up that way. Young early 20s living in sharehouse, stupid kid really.
No tweezers so we tried other methods to remove it including various chemical methods and I think we pissed it off more before we eventually removed it.
But goddamn I woke up the next day sick as fuck, high fever, dizziness, conjunctivitis and more.
Took two weeks of being bed ridden and feeling like absolute death to get over it.
Doctor didn't want to make the connection at all but I know
Fuck ticks
I had another related disease called scrub typhus which caused pretty severe and ongoing illness for me. I used to get bitten by ticks quite often working outdoors and was quite careless about it because I was not aware that there were so many pathogens present in ticks - just thought that there’s no Lyme disease here so thought it was fine.
I had a hard time convincing a Dr they should test for tick borne illnesses too because that’s about the level of knowledge of most GPS. While I was sick I researched tick borne illnesses in WA and found a Phd thesis from a student at Murdoch; they had sampled the blood of people who spent a lot of time in the bush and found that up to 50% of them had rickettsia antibodies. Much more common than people realise.
Edit: OP, if you do develop any symptoms of systemic infection (fever, flu like symptoms, headache, dizziness, fatigue) in the next few days you should visit a GP and ask for a rickettsia antibodies test and perhaps a course of antibiotics. It’s worth noting though, that for at least some of these bacteria, you can’t get them from a very young tick which has not had a blood meal from another animal, so you’ll probably be ok.
fucking hell its been hours since i posted but im at work and im still pulling the cunts off me theres no way out of the dozens i have pulled out that i wont get sick, i have been lucky enough i yank them and they come out with their heads as i am typing i can feel them under my jeans
got off work about an hour ago and when showering discovered half a dozen in the nether region got most of them out but one inparticular is really swollen and stubborn i dont have sweezers but have covered in vaseline and unsuccessfully used a grafting knife
don't want to make your day any worse, but I would probably check yourself the next few days, I find when I am exposed to that many, they tend to cling to clothing and fabrics in my car, so you might get a few more in the coming days.
Had a few on me a few years ago living on property in Lake Clifton.
Had all over joint pain a month ago that lasted a week.
Went and had bloods taken and came back saying I had the indicators for scrub typhus and/or spotted fever.
I have to go back for more bloods to see if it is a recent thing or if it has just laid dormant in me for a while.
Both are almost exclusively something you pick up from the top end and I haven't been up north for nearly 30 years.
Makes me wonder how many other people in perth have this virus.
Yeah, this post is freaking me out. I had one or two ticks on me a couple times in my life and really hated the experience. I’m freaking out reading this guys had dozens on him :(
I am gonna disagree with others, ticks in WA are generally not dangerous, you would need to be extremely unlucky to get infected with anything. I would remove the ones you can now, and the rest in the shower when you get home. use tweezers (ideally not metal ones) and pull gently directly up from skin (don't twist). if you accidently leave the head in, its annoying but not a huge deal, (generally leaves an itchy mark for the next few weeks).
I agree. They are horrible and the bites itch like crazy and can last for weeks, but you'd have to be very unlucky to catch a disease from them. We don't have paralysis or meat allergy ticks in WA. Lyme-like diseases are perhaps a remote possibility but it's not a major risk like in other parts of the world.
fair enough, they should be avoided, but I would probably treat them like mosquitos, not worth getting overly worried if bitten but if you have a severe reaction get it checked out.
In spring I get them pretty much every weekend, it would be pretty ridiculous to go the doctor every week to get them removed.
Someone who is training for a line of work that will be dealing with that as an issue in their professional life? There’s a reason you go to tafe, to learn and get experience for a job.
Ticks and other pests are what you deal with when you are not in an office.
I'm in invertebrate zoologist here in Perth, first things first 99% of people including medical doctors don't know shit about ticks or how to identify the ones that are medically significant, most species level identifications need microscopic inspection of their genitalia.

I also recommend Mackenzie Kwak's page, you can also contact him to send specimens or photos for identification. https://www.facebook.com/mackenziekwakparasitologist
It’s rare to get super sick from tick bites in WA, but my mum’s currently on the mend after getting one early December. Her doctor didn’t make the connection and now shes on medication they use for malaria.
I’d go to the doctors just in case and mention it’s a tick.
Hey mate, not sure if anyone mentioned this but check everywhere, including your dick and balls. If you have a girlfriend/boyfriend, you may want them to check your backside, too.
Get metal tweezers and burn the ends with a lighter. Use hot tweezers to pinch the tick, the heat will make it let go and should be able to pull them out.
Make sure the head is still attached - if not, get to a doc asap to get it removed.
You can cover them with petroleum jelly, they breathe through the bum, suffocate them.
If travelling to the great southern, Denmark and Peaceful Bay, there is ticks everywhere.
If you’re in Yellagonga for Tafe, I assume you’re studying CLM? If so, you’re in for a treat if you get a job in that field.. your best friend will be a roll of tape and some bushman’s, oh and maybe some scabies cream if the pepper ticks get too bad..
its apart of a cert 3 in horticulture the shell is ecosystem management and cultural observation i work at an irrigation store and would like to work in botany or climb the ladder where i currently am i was absolutely covered in pepper ticks and still have one stuck in my leg that has died but is hard to come out all day long i have been picking them off me at work every 5 minutes i would find another half dozen if i was to travel or bushwalk i am definitely taking your advice thank you :)
Ah, I see you have been looking in my glovebox. Add some wart off to the list to freeze the buggers. All part of the fun of fieldwork. Sounds like OP got hit bad though
Next time you're in the field, tuck your pants into your socks and spray your shoes and socks with insect repellent.
Long sleeved shirt tucked into your pants, and insect repellant on the wrists.
Hot wash your clothes (over 60 degrees for at least 30 mins) when you get home.
You'll likely get some random ticks appearing from god knows where over the next few days too.
I don’t know about the danger but I once went to the doctor with a tick because I didn’t know how to remove properly. He went to the kitchen and came back with a can of fly spray. Just a tiny dab of it on the tick, worked an absolute treat. Don’t need to get all fancy with your tick removal hacks at all
Have had 100s of tick bites if not thousands. Never been sick or dizzy or anything like that. Would generally grab with tweezers and pull them out. Smaller ticks are more of a pain, kangaroo ticks require more force. Only problems I would have is if I missed the head. Always check if the ticks head is attached. If it’s not, that means it’s still inside you and you need to dig around and pull it out. Your body will get rid of it but it’s about 2 months of pus and infection (had a cluster of 6 behind my ear that I missed until a few days later and only noticed when it got infected)
I got a tick bite years ago down south and a few weeks later go so unwell. Blood red whites of my eyes (unable to face daylight) and full body arthritis. It lasted six weeks with multiple trips to doctors, blood tests the works. Zero answers and docs scratching thier heads. Then one day i felt a little better...and a week later was back to normal...still with no answers. They say lime disease doesn't exist in Australia but damn i had a nighmare. Take ticks VERY seriously.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.healthdirect.gov.au/amp/article/lyme-disease
From this Lyme disease isn't native to Australia. Keep an eye on weird symptoms and see the GP if you're feeling crap
I had one and pulled it out but must have left a bit in. Took 6 months to stop itching. Don't think they have Lyme in WA. Think they are kangaroo ticks.
This is going to sound weird, but Murdoch Uni does important tick research and they want those ticks - https://tickstudy.murdoch.edu.au/
Seconding this, they’ll remove them, give you a blood test, biopsy the site, and clean it for free
All ticks should be considered dangerous. Make sure you remove them ASAP and properly. If you aren't sure, go to a GP.

Bwahahahaha i didn't even know i posted something.

I know the lecturers there. They would have definitely advised protective clothing. Whether people wear it or not is up to the individual.

See a doctor ASAP, & make a complaint to TAFE, this is really bad, if you can contact others, tell them they should also seek medical attention ASAP
I highly recommend you go see a doctor ASAP. You don't wanna miss one and get sick.
Such an overreaction to ticks. Just remove them and research the signs of what to look out for after removal. Do you go to the doctor for a bee sting?
It’s more like that they carry infection and disease. If left on he might be missing a lotta commitments.
This isn't America mate, they are pepper ticks.
Removing ticks in Australia can still cause the same illnesses as in America they're currently doing research on it here in WA but those same diseases have been found in ticks over east, including people getting mammalian meat allergy from incorrect removal.

How many bee stings there are and am I allergic to them, so, it depends.
Yes, fantastic advice for anyone reading at home. If you get anaphylaxis, seek medical attention 🙄

Take some antihistamine to help with the itching

Probably a form of rickettsia, there are several in WA ticks that can cause human infection
Damn yeah sounds exactly like that now that I'm reading about it
I had another related disease called scrub typhus which caused pretty severe and ongoing illness for me. I used to get bitten by ticks quite often working outdoors and was quite careless about it because I was not aware that there were so many pathogens present in ticks - just thought that there’s no Lyme disease here so thought it was fine. You'll be fine. We were literally trying to kill it by dousing it with various "poisons" while it was still embedded lol.
That just gave me a bum cringe.
Nah, you’ll be fine. Just make sure you get someone to check your bits you can’t check yourself. Pepper ticks aren’t worth stressing over.
i currently have 3 stuck in my upper thigh too close for comfort and i dont have tweezers so i smothered them with vaseline
Sounds uncomfortable mate, hope you get off work soon to sort it out. Good luck but don’t stress, you’ll be fine!
got off work about an hour ago and when showering discovered half a dozen in the nether region got most of them out but one inparticular is really swollen and stubborn i dont have sweezers but have covered in vaseline and unsuccessfully used a grafting knife

Hand sanitiser or even just a strong white spirit can budge them too.
thanks mate i appreciate all the help
thank you for the comment
Smothering them in Vaseline works well. They can't breathe so will let go to move.
i got no time for that with tafe and work i really hope i don't get sick

A quick google of : pepper ticks will give you the info you need
thank you much appreciated
Are they ticks or spider mites? The mites really small and red. I've never seen a red tick.
ticks they look like spider mites a comment above mentioned pepper ticks and it is exactly the same and they turn from a ballpoint to a matchhead

You can get them removed and cleaned up for free at Murdoch uni to help with a study if you’ve got the time.
Someone who is training for a line of work that will be dealing with that as an issue in their professional life? There’s a reason you go to tafe, to learn and get experience for a job. Ticks and other pests are what you deal with when you are not in an office.
Use alcohol wipes, gets the bum to stand up. Easier to remove.

It depends on the tick. Get checked by a doctor.
\> ticks are really small Not for long, they can hold a scary amount of blood
The pepper ticks stay small and look like specks of dirt.
they start of the size of a ballpoint and go upto a matchtip
It’s rare to get super sick from tick bites in WA, but my mum’s currently on the mend after getting one early December. Her doctor didn’t make the connection and now shes on medication they use for malaria. I’d go to the doctors just in case and mention it’s a tick.

I wouldn't do this for pepper ticks. They are too small, you're just going to burn yourself.
Don’t burn a tick, it can bury itself in further to get away from the heat. Just pull them out gently with tweezers.
They are highly unlikely to spread disease, but it could be possible. They will however leave you with itchy bites that could become infected.
You can cover them with petroleum jelly, they breathe through the bum, suffocate them. If travelling to the great southern, Denmark and Peaceful Bay, there is ticks everywhere.
Yeah, anyone bringing a dog through these areas knows how to spot the buggers and how much a pain in the arse it is to remove them.
If you’re in Yellagonga for Tafe, I assume you’re studying CLM? If so, you’re in for a treat if you get a job in that field.. your best friend will be a roll of tape and some bushman’s, oh and maybe some scabies cream if the pepper ticks get too bad..

Do you have any thread or dental floss? You can remove them with that too

Ya need to cover you clothes and equipment in Permethrin . Only thing that kills them when they walk on you.

There's no lyme disease in Australia and also no nasty paralysis ticks in WA but there is a few other diseases they can carry.

A quick google search shows the exact opposite https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/dscatt/about
Ah disregard, my brain read it too fast.
I met a luthier from Esperance who picked up Lymes disease from tick bites when he lived over East.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.healthdirect.gov.au/amp/article/lyme-disease From this Lyme disease isn't native to Australia. Keep an eye on weird symptoms and see the GP if you're feeling crap
Kangaroo ticks probably. Nasty little buggers. Go to a doctors and have them check you out and remove them ASAP. You should be fine.
