We have some fire matches tonight standouts being Swiatek v Rybakina and Tsitsipas v Sinner. But hell Hurkacz v Korda and Ostapenko v Gauff are also likely to be great! I just hope I can stay awake, going to have to mainline a lot of coffee!
I don't understand AO scheduling.
First up on Rod Laver - 7pm est.: a men's Legends match.
Pegula v. Kreijcikova: 4th match on John Cain arena after a women's Legends doubles match another doubles match and a men's match.
?
How's Sinner looking?
Nearly losing to Fucs isn't giving me a great impression, though coming back from 0-2 to win does show a certain mental strength which, at times, can be much more powerful than winning comfortably.
After the second set it was like a different match - Fucs dropped off a bit but Sinner started playing the way youād expect. Coming back from two sets to love for the first time might give him confidence and he shouldnāt be too tired as the last three sets were so quick and one sided.
Post Round 3 thoughts:
Ben Shelton is really breaking through. Wouldnāt be surprised to see runs at Wimbledon and/or USO as well.
Djokovic even hobbled is still Djokovic
Rune and Rublev both look great. Think this one probably goes 5.
Korda is on the verge of breaking through. Think he can easily match through Hurkacz and make the QFs or SFs.
Khachanov is finally showing some consistency on hard courts at slams specifically which is great
L. Fruhvirtova got a little lucky but is still quite an excellent player. Excited to see her match up with Vekic.
Both Gauff and Ostapenko look great - and this is Ostapenkoās best AO ever. Wonder if sheās finally going to show some consistency at slams. As for Gauff, she just looks ridiculously good right now.
Feels like Swiatek is hitting her stride at the right time but so is Rybakina. Expecting a great match.
Pegula just looks goddam unstoppable
Such a pity thst Sabalenka and Bencic play in R4 - this is a SF-worthy matchup in my eyes
Reading "Open" by Agassi and a lot of parallels when he talks about Sampras looking dead or injured and suddenly "sending his evil twin" and playing great.
It's like that sometimes, I guess.
Does the memeifecation of JJ Wolf distract from his brilliance? Perhaps, but JJ Wolf is still JJ "Fucking" Wolf, and his tennis still speaks for itself.
Bro I'm still cut from how the Murray RBA match ended. Not sure if Andy could've lasted a 5th set anyway but he still was keeping it close to forcing a TB then one awful game and one small chance later and it's all over.
Not to mention in his interview after he seemed disappointed and genuinely felt like he could win, only his back was sore during serving, no pain in hips or legs
"No pain in his hips or legs" I cast doubt on that, man was suffering from the beginning there. I think he wins this with more rest but the kokk match was literally the longest match of his career and finished at 4am. Andy is always going to be disappointed when he loses, hopefully Andy can get his ranking up so he isn't playing top players in the first round.
Always a chance, but unlikely. Rune or Rublev in the next round should be his challenge. Plus, the Australian crowd will cheer for Alex, and Djoko will increase his ego and playing ability to spite everyone.
You know your tennis
She's been around for ages, making third rounds at majors, winning ITF and spending eight years in the top 100.
She is an incredible mainstay.
She's earned top 30.
am I the only one who would mix up all the Russian WTA players with their family name ending with "va" ... Kudermetova, Alexandrova, Samsonova, Potapova ...
It's understandable, for me it's the Chinese women that get me more confused.
Peng Shuai, Zhang Shuai, Zheng Qinwen, Xiyu Wang, Xinyu Wang, Qiang Wang.
I really like Qinwen so I know who she is. the others I have to look up a picture of to figure out whose who.
I think he wants to win the Slam record but I wouldnāt call him ādesperateā. If he was desperate he would have gotten the vaccine. He wants the record but I think he knows his place in history is secure. There are three GOATs right now. At this point I think best case is someone getting to 25 but I think we are at the 16th tee.
Yep. Of course he wants the record and so does Rafa. But I think judging GOAT on Slams or in other sports championships is a bit silly anyways. And comparing eras outside of 10-20 year spans is silly too. The Big 3 debate will never be settled. Each guy is unique and special.
Highly depends on the severity of his hamstring but i could see him not playing again until Monte Carlo since heās barred from the sunshine double anyways
If he wins a week later he will be no.1... no room for him to climb...nadal will say he is not happy that Novak focus on chasing slam titles and he is the one enjoying tennis just like what he said 2021... so 2021 part2, he will skip Dubai (chilling), US spring season( canāt go wonāt go) ,focus on clay season , beat nadal at French open round16 (2020 final, 2021 semi, 2022 quarter interesting...)and get his 23st slam title.
Not Casper Ruud congratulating Brooksby for his win against him after TPaul has booted Brooksby out of the tournament. šššš I am here for his villain era.
One of the best Magdaās matches ever. Each point ever more amazing than the previous one. She neutralised Alexandrovaās serve like she was a junior
Damn, didnāt realize Fruhvirtova played a doubles match in the evening after another tough 3 setter.
Hope she isnāt too gassed by the time she faces Vekic who is a stamina freak.
hijikata and kubler fight in the doubles
im not sure why im watching them but i am ... i think its because i like the name heliovaara
thats who theyre playing GLASSPOOL and HELIOVAARA the GOATS OF EAST TRIBE
qutie the legend the sixhth seeds, GLASS and HELIO have had
they've taken the serpent from the golden crest
uncovered the buriel sights of the miceni men
and now they stand in the tower of indignance and scald
broken in flame and cobbled. y the web of the world
hijikat and kubler fight on but they see through the shower screen
down to the village of fail
Imagine planning an Australian Open trip four months ago, your first time seeing live tennis, a GRAND SLAM, and even better... getting 1/4 tickets to the day sessions.
Fast forward to the present day...
You are on track for RBA/Wolf + Korda vs Felix
Iād be absolutely devastated. Would probably cancel the trip.
I'm not. Obviously it's preposterous. Just like saying Korda/FAA would be a devastatingly bad QF. But if you want the players you deem worthy guaranteed, the option is there š¤·āāļø
That is stupid. Why would people cancel that. Like quarterfinals tickets, experience of Grand Slam Oval, musical acts and sitting with people at the middle watching the big screen
Musical acts? What? It doesnāt bother me (Iāve been about six times) but when you have quarter final tickets and the stakes are this high, youāve paid good money - yeah, you have a right to be pretty down about the situation. Esp RBA/Wolf. Not like youāre seeing the next big thing or a Tsonga in the AO2008
If they both move on, Tsitsi plays FAA.
And if Djoko beats Demon, he plays winner of Rune v Rublev
The top quarter is Nishioka/Khachanov v Korda/Hurkacz
And the bottom quarter is Shelton/Wolf v RBA/Paul
So I got over my early AO disappointment to see new interesting stories emerging. The one I love the most is Ben Shelton. 20 yrs old, turned pro last year and started playing at 14 even though his dad was a Pro tennis player. Extremely enjoyable to watch, pure raw power, Hits the FH like there is no tomorrow, serves 210 like its nothing and on top of that he is lefty what else you want
If opponents can get rattled by a teenager's noises then that should be the least of their worries. He was doing that to nullify the crowd because that was super rowdy, pretty sure his noises are nothing compared to that
Itās the first time heās ever left the U.S. and used a passport! Itās crazy heās so good and wasnāt some junior player traveling the world ever.
An Atlanta mixed with Florida accent, apparently. But maybe it's just how he draws out certain sounds. Wiki says he wanted to play (American) football and didn't start taking tennis seriously until 12. That's pretty late for a pro player at this level. Dude is super talented.
If Murrary could have pulled off a straight set win, I'm all for that, but I'm a little happy he's out of the tournament for now.
Can't imagine him coming back to win it in 5 sets and playing more tennis.
I'm hopeful he is healthy and has a run left in him for Wimbledon.
I do love how so many of you always say nadal and djoko fake and act being injured. They really really do not. Besides have you seen any promotional vid where nadal is in and he has to act. Nadal cannot act for shit
As i said at the start of the day. Tha chances of Novak losing this tournament are 0. Injury or not, he has a cakewalk in front of him and is moving perfectly fine
Now that tennis is done for the day, ESPN will end it's broadcast of repeats of basketball games, niche sports, and Sports Center to begin their telecast of the Australian Open.
Good work. š
How dare he celebrate making his first 2nd week of a GS in over a year by beating Reddit's favorite player. Should have been completely poker face in respect to his opponent - just like Murray is after winning his matches, right?
Pleasantly surprised to find out Ben Shelton is the son of Bryan Shelton.
I had come across the dad's name only once - during the 1994 AO. My then favorite player Jim Courier had to labor for 4 hours and 43 minutes (if I recall the duration right) to beat Bryan Shelton in the first round in 5 sets. That should have been a big indicator that Jim was in a steep decline, but I stupidly kept supporting a lost cause for another couple of years.
4-3, 15-30, FH long after taking control of the point. Yes thatās going to haunt me alongside some other key moments in this match. Even with Murrayās exhaustion this was winnable, just not in 5 sets. Needed to win that 3rd set
Just watched highlights of the dmitri match, clearly not moving well and leaving a lot of balls. Also seems to not be going for down the line backhands whatsoever, but the serve, backhand cross court and forehand generally kept him in it.
His movement appeared to improve a little towards end of third set, so itās possible he is trying to conserve energy/take it easy hoping the injury doesnāt worsen before week 2.
Iām doubtful Djokovic is going much further. De minaur next!
Murygoat deserves a lot of respect for this performance, to come through Berrettini & Kokk the way he did and pushed RBA to 4. Amazing stuff, he can go home very proud.
RBA man, so classy and fought like hell š now please take down Paul
Here we are 4th set TB
6-5
FAA has to save here otherwise he will face a MP ! (vs Lehecka)
Korda: I am flat ! I am not playing my game
Lehecka: I have beaten Coric and Norrie
What hustle by FAA. And what a point !
Czech and Lehecka: I can beat FAA ! And I'm only 21
Lehecka looks to take the 2nd set.
Hurkacz : I have to use the volleys more. I play a lot of doubles.
Hurkacz takes the break in the 4th set. Any Jedi Hubi fans here?
It's MP for Khachanov ! He gets it and is through. Huge smiles from him. Into the quarterfinals !
Any Ostapenko fans here? She is playing Coco Gauff.
Rybakina gets the break vs Swiatek. Still early.
Omg coco is playing Ostapenko tonight?? And no one told me??
We have some fire matches tonight standouts being Swiatek v Rybakina and Tsitsipas v Sinner. But hell Hurkacz v Korda and Ostapenko v Gauff are also likely to be great! I just hope I can stay awake, going to have to mainline a lot of coffee!
> Hurkacz v Korda and Ostapenko v Gauff are also likely to be great! I'm so psyched for both. Korda has a real chance here.
hope ruud is hanging in there š¤š»
What do you mean?
I planned to catch up on sleep tonight, but looking at the schedule, I don't think I can. Oh well...
Pegula - Sabalenka/Bencic Sinner - Rune Thats my prediction
Would be a wild result for Sinner. Heās 1-4 versus Stef and 0-2 versus Felix. Few real bad losses in there as well
I don't understand AO scheduling. First up on Rod Laver - 7pm est.: a men's Legends match. Pegula v. Kreijcikova: 4th match on John Cain arena after a women's Legends doubles match another doubles match and a men's match. ?
They're doing a lousy job
Likely they are just starting the real matches later now that it is the second week. Pretty standard.
How's Sinner looking? Nearly losing to Fucs isn't giving me a great impression, though coming back from 0-2 to win does show a certain mental strength which, at times, can be much more powerful than winning comfortably.

If I want, with all my heart, Jessie Pegula to win the tournament...how disappointed will I be at the end of AO 2023?
best match so far for men singles, other than murray-kokki?
Murray-Berrettini??
Krejcikova/Siniakova could legitimately become one of the all-time great doubles duos So dominant
6 slams together so far!
Post Round 3 thoughts: Ben Shelton is really breaking through. Wouldnāt be surprised to see runs at Wimbledon and/or USO as well. His health issues really shortened his career too. We missed more Federer vs Sampras battle because of them. Outside of clay he was incredible.
Idk where this new weird copypasta-esque meme about JJ Wolf comes from, but I hate it.
Does the memeifecation of JJ Wolf distract from his brilliance? Perhaps, but JJ Wolf is still JJ "Fucking" Wolf, and his tennis still speaks for itself.
I love it

Love the Demon but unless Djokovic's hamstring falls off he has about 1% chance.
You know what they say, DDDD. Donāt Doubt Da Demon
WOOOOO HIJIKUBLER
Time to get on the Hijikubler train, tooot tooooot!
Hijikata/Kubler playing awesome.
So hype for R16
If Linette can defeat Garcia shell be top 30 Her career high is 33.
Linette only having a career high of 33 feels criminal. She can be so fucking good.
You know your tennis She's been around for ages, making third rounds at majors, winning ITF and spending eight years in the top 100. She is an incredible mainstay. She's earned top 30.
Mouth watering contests tomorrow: Iga - Rybakina Hubi - Korda Sinner - Tsitsipas Pegula - Krejcikova

Yeah, wonder how much he will play on clay
Magda no, you need to finish her quickly
Not Casper Ruud congratulating Brooksby for his win against him after TPaul has booted Brooksby out of the tournament. šššš I am here for his villain era.
Ruud uses Internet Explorer.
I'm looking forward to POL team on next United Cup!
Linette takes her mask off and is revealed to be Iga edit: This comment did not age well
Itās almost like this match shouldnāt be on RLA
Oh my days, she actually held for the first time in 5 service games
destroying her.
Wow we had a bunch of straight set wins last night
Lets fuckin go Magda!!
She is having a good year.
One of the best Magdaās matches ever. Each point ever more amazing than the previous one. She neutralised Alexandrovaās serve like she was a junior
This is really unraveling for Alexandrova
This is embarrassing now
Magda aaaa š
Watching some clips from the earlier matches and Ben Shelton has everything needed to win Wimbledon.. something worth noting.
I thought the same thing went to see if I can get odds on it and sadly no option to bet him yet their offering odds on Bernard tomic ffs haha
I did some looking around and in the UK SkyBet has him for 100/1
Magda is on fire!! No matter what she plays, everything is in!
Very good start of the set for Magda
Is she injured or something, she has played terrible since the fifth game
Damn, didnāt realize Fruhvirtova played a doubles match in the evening after another tough 3 setter. Hope she isnāt too gassed by the time she faces Vekic who is a stamina freak.
Nice to see vekic back in form.
What the hell is Poland feeding its tennis players
Aga told all of them at United Cup to get their shit together.

There are exhibitions to watch for people who think like this.
How can you compare an exhibition to 1/4 of a slam. What a bizarre and off comparison
I'm not. Obviously it's preposterous. Just like saying Korda/FAA would be a devastatingly bad QF. But if you want the players you deem worthy guaranteed, the option is there š¤·āāļø

I am going to frame RBA for murder! and heās going to go to jail for 30 years!
Magda!!! One set away from joinimg both Iga and Hubi in the 4 round!!
Yes Magda first set
Well then
Go Magda!
Anyone know who is on track to play each other in the quarter finals? Got tickets!
If they both move on, Tsitsi plays FAA. And if Djoko beats Demon, he plays winner of Rune v Rublev The top quarter is Nishioka/Khachanov v Korda/Hurkacz And the bottom quarter is Shelton/Wolf v RBA/Paul
Magda I love you, pls hold now
Magda is so damn solid when she's focused
RBA, I will haunt you tonight and steal your horses and your baby for what you just did š
Just checked the live ranking, it's a little weird to see Medvedev & Zverev at #11 & #12 ...
So I got over my early AO disappointment to see new interesting stories emerging. WTF! Man, this is crazy, I thought he was already playing the tourney for a year or so
Alexandrova don't you dare bottle this I'm tired and I need to catch the Chelsea-Livsrpool match
Narrator - "She did"
Nice Ekaterina
Neither Alexandrova nor Linette has ever gone past the 3rd round of any grandslam.
Wtf is Ben Sheltonās accent I have watched so many American shows / movies yet itās a bit something I havenāt heard much at all
An Atlanta mixed with Florida accent, apparently. But maybe it's just how he draws out certain sounds. Wiki says he wanted to play (American) football and didn't start taking tennis seriously until 12. That's pretty late for a pro player at this level. Dude is super talented.
Itās kinda smooth to hear I like it. Yeah in his interview he mentioned how he didnāt wanna play tennis but fell in love with it
I selfishly wanted a 5th set to Murray vs Bautista Agut after I missed most of it watching Djokovic vs dimitrov
If Murrary could have pulled off a straight set win, I'm all for that, but I'm a little happy he's out of the tournament for now. Can't imagine him coming back to win it in 5 sets and playing more tennis. I'm hopeful he is healthy and has a run left in him for Wimbledon.

ESPN just started their television broadcast of the Australian Open.
Djokovic playing ADM should be an interesting test of the hip* Edit: hamstring sorry confusing him with the goat.
Thereās nothing wrong with his hip.
What body part is it?
Hammy
So is this still on the road to recovery for Murray or was that the destination/peak?
Wimbledon run incoming
Also what kind of sick form is Ben Shelton on rn its ridiculous what heās doing with such little match expirience at the highest level
I appreciate how consistently bad AlizƩ Lim is at presenting Eurosport
Her accent is cute though
Damn RBA where was that performance against Kwon in Adelaide eh? Smhh
I do love how so many of you always say nadal and djoko fake and act being injured. They really really do not. Besides have you seen any promotional vid where nadal is in and he has to act. Nadal cannot act for shit
I just remembered this glorious compilation: https://twitter.com/troublefault/status/1087021968686227457/mediaviewer
Nadal can't act? But what about the line delivery of YouknowwhatIgonnacometoZurichandplayanexhibitionmatchforyourfoundation
Is that what youāre gonna get me for Xmas?
Neither can Djokovic. That's how we can see he's being melodramatic
Back to yoo Zhames and Rebecca
Nadal trying to act is always the funniest thing
Djokovic massively exaggerates the severity of his injuries, he doesnāt fake.
LMFAOOO
As i said at the start of the day. Tha chances of Novak losing this tournament are 0. Injury or not, he has a cakewalk in front of him and is moving perfectly fine
I'll sell you my Joker future if ya want it.

Well for a bit of chaos, I want my semi final to be Korda v Lehecka, Rublev vs Shelton now
Murray gonna win Queens
Buckle in for Tsitsi v Sinner tomorrow folks
Awww Stosur crying, great career š«”
Watched a bit of the replay of Tsitsipas doubles. Man those chants were insane; such a great atmosphere.
Good match from them too! Almost beat the best doubles team in the world. Petros held his serve the whole match too!
I think im now rooting for JJ Wolf to make the semis? What a time to be alive
Has to be said the big 4 haven't always been the most gracious losers...
Man Andy's half of the draw was perfect for Andy to march all the way to the semis š
Bye guys. See you tomorrow
LFG DEMON
I think he could beat Novak if Djokovic is injured ! Is Djokovic injured?
Just watched highlights of the dmitri match, clearly not moving well and leaving a lot of balls. Murygoat deserves a lot of respect for this performance, to come through Berrettini & Kokk the way he did and pushed RBA to 4. Amazing stuff, he can go home very proud. RBA man, so classy and fought like hell š now please take down Paul
Man my heart melted watching poor Murray limping down to the room
Thank you Andy for making these early rounds so entertaining. Legend.
That image will give me nightmares
