I actually donāt think Alcarazās performance was all that great tonight. He made a ton of unforced errors, heās just a lot better than Kokk so it did matter. His leg looked healthy, though, which in my opinion is the most important thing anyway.
PEDs are used in every sport, even at amateur level. But accusing blindly is dumb, and i I find it a very poor attempt to diminish Carlitos talent and hard work.
American-sounding commentator on tennis TV keeps using the expression "from the line". Has taken me a while to work out from context that he means "on serve".
I've been watching tennis for decades and have never heard this before today. Is it borrowed from some other sport?
youāve been watching tennis for decades and never heard someone say āand now X steps to the line to serve [it out/some other scenario]ā? āfrom the lineā sounds like a close variation of that, just means in the context of someoneās service game
Yep. I'm in Australia and never had access to anything other than Aussie broadcasts of grand slams, Davis cup etc until recently if that helps explain my context.
If someone said "steps to the line to serve" sure I would get what they meant from context, but for what it's worth I only ever recall people saying "baseline" when they mean baseline.
But this usage was with much less context. I'm quite sure I've never heard someone talk about match stats using that expression. It's always been "on serve", in *my* specific experience watching tennis at least. Apologies to those I might have upset for it having been a different experience to theirs.
>It just means serving from the baseline
As opposed to serving from elsewhere? š
But yeah, that tracks with what I figured. Just don't recall ever hearing it before today, thought maybe this chap was borrowing it from car racing or something.
I agree it doesnāt make a lot of sense šš itās the only thing in tennis you do only from the baseline. You can do anything else from anywhere else. I think itās just in there for color commentary
I mean, I'm pretty he means 'on serve'. So technically yes from the baseline (that's where you serve from), but it's also more specific than that. Or am I wrong?
Trying to be as rational about Alcarazās potential/what he can do this year given his age and the inevitability of regression in all things.
*Watch him play*

The tour is lucky that both AO and USO don't play like the early 2010s, or Alcaraz would just start cleaning up. Given how popular Alcaraz is though, couldn't rule out that change happening in the near future...
the real 1,2 and 3 are Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev in no particular order, depending on how well they have been playing.
Hope all of them stay healthy and in form as much as possible to treat our eyes with blessings.
Well Iād say it depends on the player. Ben Shelton has an amazing serve but a very weak return game so in his case it would probably make sense to focus on returning.
I mean, he's the 94 of the world playing the 2
he can't do more, it's time people let it go the ethernal promise of kokkinakis being a top prospect to win slams, he's not and will never be.
Carlos' serve is going to keep improving and really become a hallmark of his game as he matures, kind of like Djoko...he'd be terrorizing the tour with it and i can't wait to witness it
Watching this makes me want to rewatch that Alcaraz/Sinner match from USO 2022 again, what a match. Imo the best of 2022 interms of pure excitement and back and forth. Close 2nd for favourite of 2022 being Nadal/Meddy.
Yesterday the Tsitsipas vs Kyrgios Wimbledon 22 match highlights was recommended to me and that match is like the evil cousin of the Alcaraz vs Sinner match
Alcaraz is slamming down on the Kokk hard, making him go soft. The Kokk needs to try thrusting back being careful not to explode and lose all his energy. Second set will be anything but tight at this rate
Kokkinakis is bad, when your opponent is bad at move, return and even serve, you could easily bring up your better game as you don't need to worry about the cost of making UEs and bad descisions
Don't understand all the downvotes, I feel like at us open he was even more quick n fast but hes still killing it here. Peak alcaraz would be at a fast court.
Idk Iāve seen him do some of his best work, arguably his absolute best work, on a clay court. Took out Djokovic and Nadal at Madrid then wiped the floor with Zverev in the final. That, to me, is almost more impressive than winning US Open with the most time spent on court. US Open was his biggest achievement for sure, but he wasnāt at his 100% best there. I think he was at his best at Madrid.
Alcaraz : \*breaths\*
r/tennis : The way he sucked in air was Nadalesque, and there was so much Federer in the way he exhaled. Perfection in everything he does Ć la Djokovic.
This guy is an absolute freak. Really thought he would come back slow and peak again around Monte Carlo but ever since his return to Argentina after 3 months off, against really good players he hasnāt missed a beat.
Gonna be extremely tough to stop come clay season.
Oh man, I want an Alcaraz v Sinner SF so bad š¤š
Murray v Alcaraz gonna be lit.
When your FHs make even your coach shake his head in disbelief. Charlie ā¤ļø
What's alcaraz potential QF meetup
Qf? Hubi Paul or Felix
How good if we get a Masters rematch between Alcaraz v Murray.
not just a masters rematch but an indian wells rematch!
I actually donāt think Alcarazās performance was all that great tonight. He made a ton of unforced errors, heās just a lot better than Kokk so it did matter. His leg looked healthy, though, which in my opinion is the most important thing anyway.
He had 9 unforced errors, that is not a ton. Also he had 21 winners. The balance is not bad
No shot he only had 9 UEs in 18 games. Maybe under a generous definition of unforced. Where did you get these stats?
In flashscore
What a way to stamp your return to hard courts! He's winning sunshine doubles yall! š„š„š„š„

Both Spaniards getting it done in straights at the same time - Alcaraz and Badosa
The Kokk got absolutely neutered. Carlitosā subdued celebration speaks volumes. Very respectful of him.
NEUTEREDšwish i said that
Wow. Carlitos looking š„ I do hope we get Alcaraz vs Meddy at Indian Wells
Vamos Charlie!! Excellent match. Much easier than I expected
GG
Now we need Med v Carlitos please
Well that was authoritative
patient on match point carlitos D: no drama stop
Alcaraz definitely looks a bit more jacked with this pink shirt. I've read in other forums a few people accusing him of being on PEDs.
There's always been the same nutjob conspiracy theorists.
If you think there's no doping in tennis you're a moron. Not saying carlos is on PEDs
Don't they test?
Yeah but you'd imagine that the top players could get around it.
PEDs are used in every sport, even at amateur level. But accusing blindly is dumb, and i I find it a very poor attempt to diminish Carlitos talent and hard work.
Also fans of other players seems to be scared of him because they always a find a excuse to hate on the kid.
You just canāt handle the Carlitos
Alcaraz is playing incredible. Kokkinakis isn't even playing badly, it's just Alcaraz is playing out of this world.
Carlos looks so unbothered lol. Hits a flying winner, just walks away nonchalantly after. Hits an unforced error, just walks it off after. I love it
Champion mindset right now
When Alcaraz canāt even be bothered to fist pump it must be getting pretty routine
More errors creeping in in this 2nd set, but should still be fine for Alcaraz.

Iāve heard it a lot while listening to commentators, not even just American ones. It just means serving from the baseline
>It just means serving from the baseline As opposed to serving from elsewhere? š But yeah, that tracks with what I figured. Just don't recall ever hearing it before today, thought maybe this chap was borrowing it from car racing or something.

You are wrong
Alrighty, noted. Thank you.
Can you give a context on how they used it? Like what's the exact sentence they said?
Something like 'Alcaraz has won 12 out of 12 points from the line' - after not losing a point in his first 3 service games š¤·āāļø

CYGS 2024 here we come šŖšŖ
Thanasi is playing slightly better but not sure if it will be enough
It wonāt be š
Lol how do they measure a forehand's quality?
I give some of these a 9.9
badosa serving 40-0 for 5-3 to self-break with 3 dfs.
I want Alcaraz to win but I also want Kokk to at least break back.
alcaraz sliding like he's still playing on clay
Geez what Kokk needs to do to win a point.
Not a good day for Aussies today it seems, all of them gonna lose
Go Kokkinakis!
Net cord: be nice Alcaraz: no
Alcaraz: 112mph winner
Trabajamos y suelto - from Carlos' team I understand the words but what does it mean in terms of playing tennis/tennis strategy?
Keep working and stay loose. So yeah basically what that other guy said, dont get complacent/tighten up and keep playing big
I read it like "keep it up doing what you are doing and don't be scared of taking risky shots"
Thanks!
Play hard (as in keep running and getting balls back) and free/loose (as in play aggressive and without nerves) I would guess.
Ahh thanks..yeah that makes sense.
The tour is lucky that both AO and USO don't play like the early 2010s, or Alcaraz would just start cleaning up. Given how popular Alcaraz is though, couldn't rule out that change happening in the near future...
I gotta see Alcaraz vs Meddy in each of their current forms my god
How did alcaraz reach to the other side... Nuts.
which forehand is better than Alcaraz one for a slow hard court right now?
Absolutely None. On all types of courts, itās not even debatable.
Fuck
Carlos gonna have a huge year. Kid is so damn good.
Goat goat goat goat goat goat goat goat goat goat goat goat
Please stop downvoting me i am not sober and I love Carlos im sorry guys
I love what I've seen from Prizmic, but that's a bit early no?
You must be fun at parties
Im such a fanboy idc though heās the main character of all main characters
ROCKET ROD
W theyāre playing mr bright side
Oooh that dropshot! Nice!
There we go.
That's match
the real 1,2 and 3 are Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev in no particular order, depending on how well they have been playing. Hope all of them stay healthy and in form as much as possible to treat our eyes with blessings.
Canāt wait to watch medvedev play alcaraz
I feel you still have to put healthy Rafa in there, although who knows when we'll see that again
On clay yes, but considering the whole year just no. He has been subpar after winning FO and lost to anybody out there possible.
A lot depends on surface too tbh.
carlos looks so fucking good omg. sunshine double and world number 1 on the way š (shameless unrealistic stan disclaimer)
Kokk looking a little limp
that kick serve is ridiculous
How the hell hard is he hitting some of these forehands?
100mph
Okay debate time: Which is easier to get results from in the limited off-season time? Coaching someone to serve better? Or return better?
Serve. Completely under your own control
Realising this isn't a debate haha.
Well Iād say it depends on the player. Ben Shelton has an amazing serve but a very weak return game so in his case it would probably make sense to focus on returning.
Thanasiās box coaching him to put more pressure on him⦠What pressure??
Glad to see Kokk getting support from the crowd too.
Kokkinakis returning like prime Isner and serving like prime Errani
I mean, he's the 94 of the world playing the 2 he can't do more, it's time people let it go the ethernal promise of kokkinakis being a top prospect to win slams, he's not and will never be.
I don't think people really expect that much from a guy who plagued with injuries for years tbh
he has not been injured for 3 years playing around 50 matches per year, still 94 ranked
What? He doesn't even play more than 20 tournaments in a year now and he is only 26
Carlos' serve is going to keep improving and really become a hallmark of his game as he matures, kind of like Djoko...he'd be terrorizing the tour with it and i can't wait to witness it
Finally a rally!

Best match ever im making my future children watch it everyday before school
Yesterday the Tsitsipas vs Kyrgios Wimbledon 22 match highlights was recommended to me and that match is like the evil cousin of the Alcaraz vs Sinner match
That was the match that really got me back into tennis so it definitely has a special place in my heart
The full match is on YouTube isn't it
Yup - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNYhoYjRs3Y
Thereās also an extended highlights thatās about 45 minutes long if youāre short on time, Iāve watched that a couple times.
I loved that match, so much firepower, creativity, and pendulum swings. Hope we get another gem like that this year
Alcaraz is slamming down on the Kokk hard, making him go soft. The Kokk needs to try thrusting back being careful not to explode and lose all his energy. Second set will be anything but tight at this rate
From your comment about wanting Thanasi to win to whatever the FUCK this is Paradise Moses you are on thin ice with me buddy
Are you stalking me
I am in your house
Then you can probably see my small Kokk sculptures everywhere, I love Kokk
That was an easy first set.
Carlos what the hell
We are witnessing this match what would be Carlitos with Pete or Roger serve
its not about him serving well, it is about how kokk basically goes flaccid whenever he has to return
Not really tbh. Serve still has a long long way to go.
I mean He is serving better than usual. not that He has a serve like Sampras or Roger.
I know on-court coaching was a whole debate for the community but I love listening to what the coaches have to say to their players.
servebot kokk can't do any damage on return games
Kokkinakis is bad, when your opponent is bad at move, return and even serve, you could easily bring up your better game as you don't need to worry about the cost of making UEs and bad descisions
He has a strong serve and that's pretty much it, everything else about his game is average
but he did bad at the first two, it helps building the confidence of your opponent
The mic in Kokkinakis' coaching box is very audible lol
It was like this for Taylor as well
They set it up well
As much as alcaraz is controlling the game, slow courts dont fit him at all
Slow hard courts have been his best surfaceā¦.
Slow hard is exactly where he succeded the most for now.
Literally what the fuck are you talking about
Fast courts would even make alcaraz more deadly I'm saying.
I donāt think thatās possible. Alcaraz is already the single deadliest player on tour, itās hard to imagine anything making him more deadly
How?
Ok but slow courts also suit him because heās that guy? Heās from SPAIN
Alcaraz's movement to his forehand still doesn't look 100% to me, but I'm sure he'll have it back in time for clay season.
Kokki has no answer. This is rough
Alcaraz didn't lose a single point while serving until now... wtf
100% win on first serve and 100% win on second serveā¦. Did I read that right?? Holy fuckšš¤£
Just lost his first service point if Iām not mistaken
ah damn I jinxed it š
badosa shitshow starting just in time
Oof ok maybe land a few first serves, that would be helpful
Official tennisTv streaming the match live on YouTube!
Why can't I find the stream on their YT page??
I donāt think itās available in the US, if thatās where you are
vpn to India?
Currently in Canada dunno if that makes a difference...
Me neither...
Alcaraz : \*breaths\* r/tennis : The way he sucked in air was Nadalesque, and there was so much Federer in the way he exhaled. Perfection in everything he does Ć la Djokovic.
I mean heās such a star tho. I get why he gets such high praise š¤
Thanasi can def play better than this, feel like nerves are getting to him
Hope he finds his first serve in the next set.
Then again, there's nothing he could've done about that dropshot, that was gorgeous
I feel like Iām watching Iga again
Can Alcaraz miss? This is Djokovic-level suffocation and Federer-level finesse
We got a miss!
Keys retires... what a shame.
Oh well itās just womenās tennis
Was she hurt?
I make a nice chunk of money if this match is 20 games or less so hope Carlos cleans this up lol
If it takes Carlitos more than 20 games to win this match Iāll eat my mattress
Why are the balla moving so slow? Slow courr?
IW has slow courts, it's like a clay hard court
Carlitos shot making is ridiculous
Was that the real Rod Laver or a wax figurine
Somehow Rod Laver returned!
Rod
This guy is an absolute freak. Really thought he would come back slow and peak again around Monte Carlo but ever since his return to Argentina after 3 months off, against really good players he hasnāt missed a beat. Gonna be extremely tough to stop come clay season.
Gonna be extremely tough to stop anytime. 40 win season coming up??
Is IW where we finally see Alcaraz - Medvedev?
We saw them at Wimbledon a couple of years ago
Meant both at high levels
Iād donate a kidney to guarantee Carlos stays healthy over his career
Imagine med vs alcaraz šµāš«
Sheesh Carlitos flying right now
Something about Alcaraz on a slow court at night.
*Chefās kiss*
Alcaraz def bulked up in the last month, his upper body is looking bigger, which is crazy considering he already looked jacked
