Why are the finals for Dubai and Acapulco scheduled on Saturday? There are no notable tournaments scheduled for next week either.
Jabeur-Kontaveit matches are always 🔥 I'll never wake up early to exercise but I will for this match tomorrow. Hoping Ons can drop shot her way through but Anett is probably the favorite
Jabeur leads their h2h 3-1 and that one Kontaveit win was a retirement. I don't think there is a favourite in this match tbh. I am rooting for Jabeur though.
This was oddly entertaining.
Pulling out Heliovaara, Ninomiya, and Zavatska when Hurkacz/Halep, Nadal, and Zverev exist haha. Also Elina forgetting her married name
My favorite part was Murray saying like “there’s a Z?” and probably purposely not saying Zverev. Also Leylah passing on R when she could've said Raducanu. Also Murray mainly named WTA players, he's a true fan
And no-one got Panna Udvardy! :)
Murray was super-competitive about it all.
How about X? any idea?
Xu, Chinese doubles player
Udvardy was the only one I could think of too
The current ATP Top 10 is crazy good. Probably the deepest in a long time. I honestly think it's gonna stay this way the rest of the year. With all due respect to the likes of Schwartzman, Hurkacz, Dimitrov, Shapovalov, Monfils, Khachanov and Goffin, who have all been in there for at least a couple of months in the recent years, the current group seems to have the whole "beat the players you are supposed to beat" thing down pat, much better than many of their predecessors. And for the record, the 11-20 group is also way better than it's been recently as well. And this group has utterly dominated the 11-20 folks this year despite that.
Against non-top 10 opponents
- Djokovic is 2-0
- Medvedev is 7-1 (lost to Humbert)
- Zverev is 9-2 (lost to Shapovalov and Bublik)
- Tsitsipas is 12-2 (lost to Schwartzman and Safiullin)
- Nadal is 11-0
- Berrettini is 7-3 (had to withdraw mid match against Paul, would otherwise probably be 8-2. Also lost to Alcaraz and De Minaur)
- Rublev is 11-1 (lost to Cilic)
- Ruud is 6-1 (lost to Bautista Agut)
- Auger-Aliassime is 12-1 (lost to Fritz)
- Sinner is 10-0
87-11 combined record this season by these 10 players against all players who are not on this list. It's complete domination...especially impressive from the #7-10 group.
I genuinely think this group is largely gonna level out amongst one another. Berrettini's health dependent, I think this will basically be the top 10 all year long. If he doesn't stay healthy, I could see Norrie or Alcaraz breaking in, as they are both really close to this quality (in terms of record vs everyone else) as well.
I am so happy to hear this. There so much "When the big 3 retire men's tennis is going to be terrible" - it's just so... unimaginative. I love the top 10. I love the top 30. There are a couple in the 50's that I'm watching and a couple in the 90's. There is so much talent and skill. I'm excited for the future.
"lost to Humbert" 🤣
Wolf is garbage. Finally got a chance to show something on the main tour and this is what he does, haha. Back to challengers.
Medvedev and Rublev might be having a bit of a tough time of it the next few months.
Nothing to do with them. But current events and a long stint in the US might be awkward
People aren't their government, I'm from the UK I don't want to be blamed for my countries actions in Iraq. Unless players come out in support of the this war there should be no hostility towards them.
Yes, because Medvedev and Rublev moonlight as Putin's staff
No they won't. No Russian NHL players are being subject to any harassment just because they're Russian.
They got nothing to do with anything. Are you implying they will be harassed simply because they are Russian? Ridiculous.
Not that far fetched, chinese people were harrased for Covid as well, so the same nonsense might happen for russian people as well…
really want med to win the tourney for him to get over his rafa problem but i also kinda want stef to beat med to get over his med problem, mhhh
Unreal collapse by ak47 right now…
Med, Rafa, and Stef played for a combined 3 hours, 10 minutes today. Meanwhile on day 1, Isner-Verdasco, Kozlov-Dimitrov, and Zverev-Brooksby EACH played longer than that lol
Does anyone know how long the Medvedev and Nadal matches were?
63, 75 minutes
Elina on twitter :(
It's time for the "decipher Stef's camera quote" part of the day
‘Don’t give up on me’ in Spanish you absolute nerd.
Again? He has written it before.
He knew we were wavering after yesterday
Absurdly good holy crap. And he doesn’t have to face Medvedev in the next round unlike that Sinner match so he can build on the confidence.
A sheep in Wolf's clothing
47 minute match goodness gracious
Stef really wanted that massive ace to close out the match and couldn’t get it lol.
Wolf won 16 points in total, well 16 more than i would have🤣🤣
Tits is back
Acapulco has been kind of a dud so far (I know it's cuz of all the withdrawals). Besides the Kozlov drama on day 1 (horrible quality match though) and maybe Zverev-Brooksby, most matches have been completely boring. Really hoping the QFs onward are good!
True but prospect of Med-Rafa semifinal & Rafa-Stef or preferably Bullshit Russian-Small Kid final pretty exciting
I’ll take either one.
JJ Wolf without the mullet kinda looks like Kurt from Glee lol
Med Stef and Rafa losing 7 games collectively lol.
That’s an absolutely fucking insane number
It’s like Stef saw Med’s score with Andujar (6-1 4-0) and wanted one just like it for himself
Stop hitting to his forehand JJ!
All the centre court matches today have been duds
Stef hasn’t had enough grass time. His two big seasons (2019, 2021) were after seriously devastating French open losses (apparently he was openly sobbing in the hotel lobby after losing to Stan). Then obviously 2020 didn’t happen.
Wolf is not this bad of a player…he’s kinda up and coming and this match is a total disappointment
just beat a top 25 guy in sonego… insane to watch this
So so so so bad. He’s trying to hit as hard as he can every single shot. It’s like watching an over eager 4.0 amateur
Trust me, that’s exactly how he plays EVERY match. I’ve never seen a player hit the ball harder than this guy. It’s always a wonder to me how he gets so deep in basically every challenger tournament. But he does
Stef doing his best to let me go to bed at a decent hour 🤗
I'm still baffled that Taylor Fritz got to 16th in the world.
Relax haha. Fritz is a really good player, and Nishioka played a really really great 3rd set. It happens
Stef going quick. Med going quick. Maybe they’re hanging out together tonight?
Is that what we’re calling Stef now?
Besties celebrating Dasha's bday together
Med: I got you a present! It’s Stefanos!
J.J. Wolf seems like the generic character you'd get in tennis game app that doesn't have licensed pros.
He cut his mullet!
Man, that was his trademark
Okay half an hour in, probably halfway through the first- oh.
Pretty shocking result. Nishioka dropped out of the top 100 and was playing challengers 2 weeks ago
Actually a positive...he won Columbus Challenger and in final of Cleveland; been putting in the work.
Stef takes the first set 6-1 in 22 minutes.
Felt like I was watching the match on fast forward. 🥴🥴
I texted my mom and one game was gone 😨
Fritz was just the epitome of hot mess express after he let some of the break points go he had on Nishioka's serve in the latter stages of set 2. From then on, he looked increasingly rattled and impatient and Nishioka just had to get the balls back...and back...and back. For all the weapons he has on paper, he needs to really dial it in and just construct the points he wants; not the best start to his year post-AO so far.
I absolutely love bizarre H2Hs among players who aren't exactly super-famous. Like no one would expect Nishioka to be 3-0 against Fritz. And yet.
The same way that Taylor Fritz selectively GOATs against Italians, Yoshihito Nishioka selectively GOATs against Taylor Fritz.
He's also 3-0 v. Evans, 2-0 v. Monfils, and 2-0 v. De Minaur (plus 2-1 v. FAA). Definitely my favorite player ever to quit a match for a lack of coffee
I'd forgotten about the coffee incident! Definitely amongst the top "wtf is going on here" moments in a match.
Curious what is Fritz’ head to head with the top Italians? Never noticed it being a thing
Oh that’s cool resource, I’ll be sure to use that more
Not sure about his H2H against them overall, but it's a meme that started when he beat Berrettini and Sinner back-to-back to make the semis at Indian Wells last year... also beat Zverev that tournament.
Since then, he's only played one Italian (Sonego, at Bercy), and he beat him too.
7-3 vs Berrettini, Fognini, Sinner and Sonego I think.
Hmm..not like blow your mind cray or anything but pretty damn good and better than you would think !
Very disappointing for Fritz whose stated goal for this year is to make the top ten.
Really depressing loss because it exposed his strategy ball bashing strategy as the only plan he has. Worried he can’t break the top 10 without having any variety in his game.
He’s a smart kid with a good head on his shoulders. I think he’ll figure it out. He just made his first 2nd week at a major this year, he’s heading in the right direction. Tough loss tonight against Nishioka who admittedly played great and wouldn’t miss
Nishioka takes down Goliath!
What a rally! Yoshi with some inspired play.
crowd loves Yoshi
Taylor not good against the Nishis I guess. 0-3 against Nishikori and 0-3 against Nishioka. Today was the first time he’s won a set against either
Nishioka honestly sometimes feels just unplayable the way he can get every freaking ball back with depth
Horrible movement from Fritz this set. He should have no issues getting to alot of these paceless looping balls that Nishioka keeps throwing at him, but he's barely getting a racquet on them.
Nishioka is playing well, but Fritz is likewise playing some of the worst tennis I've seen him play in a while.
Tsitsipas wearing the same kit as the line judges
He wore it first! So it's more like the line judges are wearing the same kit as him
They’re wearing it to mess with Med
"Everywhere I go, I see his ~~face~~ shirt"
What happened to Fritz?
Nishioka stopped missing and Fritz has a complete lack of variety and no plan B
Stef is so devastating to the opponent when he is playing like this. Maybe he can reach the final if he keeps it up.
Okay so I just noticed, what is happening to my boy Taylor? Shouldn't be losing to nishioka
He's 0-2 against Nishioka, although they last played in 2019.
I know, but Yoshi has been losing tons of matches lately and Taylor is close to the best form of his life.
True, I am surprised as well, especially after the way that the first set went.
Nishioka's 2-0 H2H against Fritz doesn't lie
Nishioka plays like a robot
Looks like Stefanos got the yips out of his system. He’s playing much better now than yesterday.
If stef loses to wolf then im done with life. Should go something like 6-2 6-1
This is good Stef, I just want a stress free straight sets win today so I can go back to sleep
ANOTHER incorrect overrule in Guadalajara. 🤦♂️
Okay, I am not usually a conspiracy theorist, but:
TennisTV is usually quick to capitalize on player meltdowns. Hell, they put them into compilations called "[Top 10 Tennis Meltdowns and Angry Moments](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxvBkZ-jGyo)!" and post them onto YouTube. If a player does something controversial on court, it's usually featured on their page - like stuff by [Kyrgios](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqQ-26iBlT8), [Medvedev](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv0Q9jXIz-M), etc. I'm guessing they do this because they figure that more people are likely to watch this kind of stuff.
And yet. Nothing on Zverev's meltdown yesterday. Highlights from matches after his match have been uploaded onto the channel. They're even copystriking other people posting the video of his meltdown - something they don't usually do, btw, Youtube is absolutely *filled* with other channels which feature players having meltdowns using TennisTV material.
The ATP is really protecting him like he's their be-all and end-all after the Big 3 retire, even when there are far more likeable players who they could choose to promote instead.
I thought the same but didn't want to post it, it seems like they are going on protecting him.
I think they know that the reception to a video of *him* doing it won’t be the same as how we view Medvedev and Kyrgios doing it. Like it’s in bad taste when you are showing it and the guy might (almost certainly is) a domestic abuser. With Kyrgios and Medvedev it’s like oh yeah them being silly again but with Zverev it would be way darker?
Then I get them not posting it as highlights or anything, but the fact that they are also copystriking the video across other platforms makes me think that they just want to protect him.
Yeah maybe the case, my biz law professor told us that to protect copyrights you basically like have to be diligent with that stuff which I personally think is dumb but could be something to do with that. They pretty much strike down everything but I agree they have a vested interest to protect the guys image so maybe it’s a bit of both
The diligence usually involves a specific copyrighted item - like say you write a book, and that book is being copied again and again and you know about it but don't do anything about it, then you have a weaker defence.
I just found this one a bit odd because they don't really copystrike player tantrums. YouTube is absolutely full of fan-made compilations of other players going ballistic, which is why I found them removing this one in particular a bit odd.
Highly suspicious. Every other player's fuck-up is freely floating around on twitter and yet, they're removing Zverev's. Does he have relatives in the ATP? Do his sponsors single-handedly support the tour? Is some higher-up secretly in love with him? Like...why? Is it just sunk cost fallacy in action?
Wtf is going on with Murray & Soares?
Oh my God, they lost a set, what the fuck is going on with them???? This sub…
Lol it wasn’t that serious, I just found they were playing really poorly, thought maybe Murray was injured the way he was moving…chill bud
Nothing, its just the balkan power duo on the other side.
Interesting, I thought Murray & Soares were heavy favourites
They were, i was joking 🤣
Nooo did JJ Wolf get a haircut??
Why do most top American players hate playing defense? Brooksby being the exception.
Yes this guy will beat Medvedev 🤣🤣
credit to Nishioka tho
Fritz is 100% on first serve points won??!!
Sorry Fritz fans 😭
Horrible tennis from both Fritz and Nishioka.
Praying for the Svitolina-Monfils family, Kostyuk family and all other Ukrainians.
God this must be such a horrible time for them right now.
Me - Ooh 40-40 Nishioka has a chance to break here maybe!
Taylor Fritz 1 minute later - 2 monstrous first serves, makes it 4 all.
I predict Rafa takes Acapulco! Vamos
He will definitely beat Zverev 😂
Zverev already beat Zverev.
It's all about the semis, imo. Whoever reaches the finals from this side of the draw wins the tournament. Zverev is out and Tsitsipas is not in the best shape of his life. It's just Rafa and Med.
Med might make it hard but I still think Rafa has this
I'd put the match 60-40 in his favor. Med still is the best HC player for me rn but Rafa has had a strong advantage over him matchup wise and these are slow courts like Medvedev's hated and Rafa's beloved clay. Med might have trouble punching through.
Is it just me, or have the chair umpires in Guadalajara been absolutely shit all week? I can’t remember the last time I saw this many incorrect overrules.
Question : what's a lucky looser
Before every tournament, there's a set number of open spots in the bracket that the qualifiers are held for. Sometimes, someone withdraws very late before the tournament, so they fill in those spots with the "top loser(s)" from the qualifiers. That is why they are called "lucky loser".
When someone on the main draw retires, someone that lost in the qualy’s is selected randomly to play the main draw. It’s called lucky looser because even though you lost you get to play the tournament
Y'all, don't downvote people asking legit questions. Make this a welcoming place to new fans.
Someone who lost in the qualifers but still got in the tournament because someone withdrew from the main draw.
Wildcard ? Thanks
No, not a wildcard.
So there are basically four categories of player who usually get into tournaments.
1. Main draw players: Players who get in based on their ranking. The highest ranked players who apply to play at a tournament are already filled in to a certain number of spots.
2. Wildcards: These are players who fall below the ranking cutoffs, but are still allowed to play because of some special reason. Either they're well-known and big names who will draw big crowds (Murray, Osaka). Or they are local players who are given a special shot.
3. Qualifiers: Before any tournament, there is a pre-tournament held where players who do *not* meet the ranking cutoffs play for a certain number of slots. The best of these players are then automatically entered into the main draw of the primary tournament.
4. Lucky losers. These are guys who lost at the last stage of qualifying. In case any of the main players withdraw after the draw has already been made, the spot is filled with a lucky loser. So in Kozlov's case, he lost in the last round of qualifying, but was ultimately able to enter the tournament since Cressy, who was earlier scheduled to play, withdrew last-minute.
Not wildcard. Just someone who lost in the qualifiers but still got in. Wildcards are given out to players for specific reasons like nationality or great status in the game. They don't even play the qualifiers.
This is basically a rush to find a decent enough player who's still nearby enough and let them play in the main draw. Naturally, the people who played and lost in the qualifiers make up this class.
Wild take. The last 3 matches before that between Medvedev and Rafa went the distance. And yes, of course Rafa is having easy straight set victories over Kudla and Kozlov, lmao.
Cameraman likes Rafa's ass.
Cameraman doing god's work.
Aren’t we all?
As well as thiem's
"Nadal's best ever start to a season" ~ Age 35.
TBF he's only won the AO once before. Hard to have a really strong start to the season without winning the AO.
12 wins in a row to start the season for Rafa.
His best start ever.
What a cold handshake, a sore loser
Stefan Slo-Mo Kozlov
Nadal just giving Kozlov the three games gift he had won in practice
Order is restored lol
He's 4-13 in hard court matches on tour level. Never been ranked in the top 100. What do you expect?
first serve % is overrated...it's all about how good your 2nd serve is and if your first serve is any good at helping you win points.
Damn just tuned it. Was the first set really that one sided?
I just want to see a hard hitting baseliner absolutely smash the shit out of Kozlov's serve.
I mean, Berretini is as hard of a hitter as you can get and even he lost rhythm.
Oh well. It was sweet while it lasted.
It's pretty funny that Rafa prob wins this match with a better looking scoreline than the Kudla match when his level of play has been SO much lower today.
I don't know how much of it is Rafa? How much of it is Kozlov's weird playing style?
It's mostly just Koslov, i think. He has the Zverev style of "drag your opponent's level down" quality to him. Rafa has been serving quite well enough. Koslov did decent against Berretini the same way. Probably was why dimi looked like a club player yesterday.
Rafa breaks back. That's what i like to see
Wooow what a surprise 🤣🤣
Rafa just likes to build that break back percentage.
Typical second set Rafa. Gotta give em hope to take it away.
Rafa breaks right back
Kozlov serve and volleying with that serve 😐
Kozlov does fuck up opponent's rhythm though. Exactly what happened to Berrettini at AO, where he lost one set against Kozlov.
Why am i worried everytime i see an overhead on Rafa's side?
Now imagine being a Novak fan (well, before all the 2022 crap)
Maybe they think it is a waste not to stay longer on court as Stefano scheduled 40 mins later
Bask in the glow, Koslov!
Berrettini and Kozlov have same number of breaks against Rafa : 1
Yeah but Kozlov has one more backhand than Berrettini
I swear Rafa and Nole purposely lose games to put themselves under pressure so they're sharper for later in the tournaments
No. They're in their mid-30s. Their ability to always hit their shots has declined. Happened to Roger too.
I've thought this about Djokovic for 10 years though
\*waits for half of reddit to announce that they would have broken Rafa twice by now\*
Pleased for Kozlov!
