I’m giving my two weeks this week and I’m so excited to watch some tennis instead of work.
Next Gen ~~czech~~ WTA in action this week:
.#139 Linda Noskova (17, CZE) - ITF 60k Ceska Lipa, Czechia (Clay)
.#175 Linda Fruhvirtova (17, CZE) - WTA 125 Gaiba, Italy (Grass)
.#269 Sara Bejlek (16, CZE) - ITF 60k Ceska Lipa, Czechia (Clay)
.#347 Nikola Bartunkova (16, CZE) - ITF 60k Ceska Lipa, Czechia (Clay)
.#857 Lucie Havlickova (17, CZE) - ITF 60k Ceska Lipa, Czechia (Clay)
Havlickova won the junior french open 1 week ago. Bartunkova and Bejlek lost in the semifinals. I don't know why her ranking is so low tho. Maybe her focus was in the juniors unlike the other girls that played many pro tournaments already.
Here's my match for tomorrow: R16 Birmingham: Krunic/Kichenok v Ostapenko/Kichenok.
Siblings Nadiia and Lyudmyla square off in doubles!
My key matchup of tomorrow is Opelka vs. De Minaur.
mobile serve-bot vs. scrappy grinder.
Just noticed that FAA and Med plays doubles together in Halle. What lose to TVR does to players
It has been announced more than two weeks ago... so before the losses.
ATP Challenger, Blois starts tomorrow. [Here's all you need to know (including free live streaming, yep)](https://sportslumo.com/tennis/2022-atp-challenger-blois-where-to-watch-schedule-players-live-streaming-details/)
My bracket ended up with Čilić winning Queens and doubles besties/TvR victims FAA & Med battling it out in the final of Halle. So what now.
The Rothesay Birmingham Classic is here with the likes of Ostapenko and Halep in the mix. [All you need to know](https://sportslumo.com/tennis/2022-birmingham-classic-where-to-watch-schedule-players-live-streaming-details/)
The Van Rijthoven vs Medvedev result is actually nuts. He is world number 200 something, he just beat the world number 1, and also FAA and before this week he hadn't even won a single ATP tour match like WTF like how is this possible??
I have follow hom xin d challenged tour. He is s lehemd
Serve always good, but considering his constantly consistency falter, i not shock hs did nt do much yet
It's the first ATP match I ever saw live and what a weird one it was. Just after the match someone in my stand bombarded me with conspiracy theories of how this match was won.
He beat Meddy and FAA on grass too which makes it even crazier.
We can all do it!
My fat ass seems to disagree 😂
Beatriz Haddad-Maia adds the doubles title at Nottingham (with Shuai Zhang); it's a two Capirinha day!
With Kudermetova and Mertens dropping points from Wimbledon, Zhang has a very good chance of being number 1
It's definitely been an exciting 12 months for her. She'd be the first Chinese world No. 1 since Peng Shuai. Pretty monumental achievement for Chinese tennis.
Zheng Qinwen d. Wang Xiyu 6/4 4/6 6/3 in the final of WTA 125 Valencia.
Qinwen will be China's #1 tomorrow (#46) and Xiyu will be #100. A new career high ranking for both.
After giving hell to Iga in RG Qinwen did what she had to do in a smaller tournament, she won the whole thing. It seems that she is becoming consistent, which is always a good sign coming from a teenage talent. Only Raducanu, Gauff and Fernandez are better ranked than Qinwen at 19 but she is closing the gap.
Now Qinwen will move to grass to play WTA 500 Berlin starting tomorrow. I don't expect anything due to the sheer lack of time and preparation (Valencia was on clay) but I wonder how she will play on grass in a few weeks and in the future.
I've seen Qinwen's past 3 matches and as much as I'm rooting for her....she needs improvement in every aspect of her game to break into the top 30.
**Serve** \- 1st serve % is awful and is the lowest percentage of any woman ranked above her. She double-faults too often.
**Ball-striking** \- Qinwen hits hard but needs better control. She produces too many unforced errors. All to often, you'll see her hit the ball short, out of bounds or into the net.
**Volleying** \- Its good that Qinwen ***TRIES*** to go to the net but she's currently no threat. Opponents all to often just hit a hard shot at her which she deflects out of bounds. She doesn't yet look comfortable at the net.
If Qinwen can get past Alycia Parks on Tuesday, an interesting potential matchup with Ons Jabeur awaits.
It's nice to see that people are interested in her game now but she didn't play well this week (and still won the tournament). Sometimes it's hard for players to leave a huge tournament like RG to play a much smaller tournament 1 week later. It's hard to focus and she definitely didn't bring her A-game there. This sudden transition to grass will be tough as well but keep watching her this season, you won't regret.
Qinwen Zheng is now 9-0 in pro-finals. Iga-like 👀
Novak been awfully quiet (on the socials) since loss to Rafa.
I’m imagining he’s dousing himself with chakra water (not sure if that’s a thing but let’s go with it), chanting, letting his rage out into a crystal that he will crush/ingest/pass through his system, watching all the recordings that have been dubbed over with cheering of all his favourite tournament wins, making his entire family and team follow his routine/affirmations/strict diet so that no one poisons him (e.g. imagine if he gave a good night kiss to his child and accidentally inhaled a bit of sugar from that cinnamon donut they might have snuck in before bed - it would send Nole into a past life), being celibate and generally being really easy to be around.
Yeah, he Has a tough year, he isn't there mentally, needs to reset. I'm worried about him though
Andy's grunts are so annoying
I love him but at the same time can see why you might think this. If you think of his late career as a kind of absurd theatre piece, where everyone is just waiting for his opponent to hit a dropshot the various other noises and disputations start to make sense as a kind of critique of the globalised, Late Capitalist bind we all find ourselves enslaved by.
I've been thinking about how tailor-made Tim's game is made for the grass, with all of the variety and the different looks he gives on each ball. It really reminds me of Muchova in a sense, but with slightly more pace, a stronger serve, and the distinct one-hander. And he didn't seem to overuse the dropshot or slice like Jabeur might when she gets nervous. But I think that kind of explains why all three of them have to red-line in order to perform well on hard and clay courts, though, in this era of tennis, and how unsustainable that can be week-to-week.
It feels like Tim basically hasn't had his breakthrough on challengers because grass challengers are rare and hard to get into at his lower ranking, and it seems he can get too rushed on hard and clay courts to make those distinct style choices he made today (which were also helped by the unique grass low bounce) and not penetrate the court enough to do the damage he needs.
If anyone else has been an avid Tim watcher on the challengers and wanna share any thoughts, please do. The talent is clearly there and the mental strength just has to be fortified tournament-to-tournament. I'm still just fascinated by how he overcame each higher-ranked player this week lol. I hope he, Tallon, and Botic are buddies and can be mainstays on the tour together for a while.
He's hardly played that much on grass. I read somewhere 10 matches or something...so mostly around this year and in this tournament. I'd say one should wait a little bit more before declaring him a certified grass court maverick, lmao! His low slice definitely does the most amount of damage here. Could work in Wimbledon even where they changed the grass some seasons ago and made it slower. He's also decent in hardcourts with close to 70% career wins which is where I feel his grass court figures will also go in a few seasons once the matches average out over the years.
Zheng vs Wang match being streamed on the Valencia Open tournament website, FYI
Obviously I’m getting ahead of myself here.
But just think, Djokovic was one match away from winning the Calendar Slam, something no man had done in 52 years. After he failed to do it, most of us figured we’d never see it in our lifetimes.
Imagine if, just *one year* later, Nadal manages to do it.
I'm a Novak fan, but I will root for Rafa and his calendar grand slam too. I would be really happy if it happens, because first of all I'm a tennis fan and wanna see something almost impossible being done .
Based. I wish I was this mature like a decade ago, I feel like I didn't enjoy Federer because I wanted him to lose so Rafa would win
Ooh, you're so nice :) but I was called a hater before, so I'm not so sure, lol
Does anyone know what happened during Berretini’s speech? He got interrupted by something?
A ballboy fainted
ATP Challenger of Corrientes (50) draw had to be remade multiple times. They forgot to include some players, then they didn't take into account seeding, ...
I know someone in that draw haha (son of owner/ head coach at the academy I used to go to)!
It's happening again. Tennis Channel showing a pickleball championship: 2022 Select Medical Orange County Cup.
lord help us all
Hubi is now doubles specialist I see xD
3rd grass court title for Berrettini (+ Wimbledon final). He really is the new Andy Roddick. lol
Hey Andy Murray played a top 5 grass courter to three tough sets.
Really happy for him. He clearly has so much passion for the game and doesn't take anything for granted.
Some really insane matches on Berlin. We could have a lot of seeds out already in the first round
Jabeur x Muchova
Pliskova x Kanepi
Kudermetova x Sabalenka
Kasatkina x Kalinina
Jabeur muchova will be real grass court tennis. Beautiful players.
I don't expect much from Kalinina on grass but she could surprise
Man what a huge victory for Berrettini this is, coming back from surgery and all! Now this is called a comeback! 👏👏👏
Honestly is impressive to keep his level fairly high and win his first tournament back. Nice to see Medvedev back in pretty good form too.
True. Good for both of them, although sucks for Meddy, not being able to do much with this experience considering the ban and all...
Tennis was nice but outside of that Stuttgart was not that enjoyable to watch.
This has to be the most awkward trophy ceremony I've seen
it's like the organisers are planning for a kids tournament
What is this awkward confetti
this ceremony is kind of cringe overall, the organisers speeches, the trophies, playing 'we are the champions' while murray and matteo have to take photos together xD
the "surprise" was the shiny plastic litter...yay?
Not to mention someone passing out in the middle of the winner’s speech
The calf size difference is *striking*
To organizers - please add shade to tennis stands/bleachers
Sitting under 3 hours of almost 30 degree heat is stifling
Good grief his smile is mesmerizing
Did someone pass out again?
a ballboy. thankfully he is okay
Glad he is okay
People on tennis court/stands: ok ima pass out
Forgot how good looking matteo is
Well this is awkward.
Oh man what's happened, did someone fall ill again?
One of the ballkids passed out.
Something with a ballboy
Matteo so shy!
These are some shit-tier trophies tbh
HERE, HAVE SOME GLASS CUBOID.
*Hugo Boss has fully infiltrated the Stuttgart Open*
Wanted Medvedev, Murray, Riske and Sabalenka to win. Good day!
Just saw on twitter that Federer and Tim van Rijthoven have the same number of top 10 wins(2) on grass outside of wimbledon.
WTF is that runners up trophy lol
Winners trophy not much better!
yea they are both bad, the plates that meddy and tim won are better
Jesus Christ, this speech from the Stuttgart Mayor was awful.
What did he say?
He should've gotten booed like the Chicago mayor last year. Politicians are always ruining things
What did he say? I don’t speak German
what was this speech.. thankfully Murray can't speak german :D
Can we get a general summary don’t speak German either 💀
He talked about nonsense, thanked all the dudes/sponsors, then how this tournament shows that Stuttgart stands for the mix of innovation and tradition, talked like 5 more minutes how great Stuttgart and Weissenhof is, congratulated Andy on his run and said that the Queen would surely be proud and then Matteo to his Boss Open win.
"I'm sure the Queen would be proud."
yes as a scotsman im sure murray thinks of the queen after every match
I just laughed embarrassingly loudly thank you
Murray falls just short in his 250 grass vulturing attempt by quitting clay early and playing challenger grass events to steal a march on the rest of the tour.
Lmao I can't think of anything that would make Murray more uncomfortable than calling him a hero and an icon
Is Matteo better than Mark Philippoussis (big server in the 2000's)? He's not better than Andy Roddick (or is he?)
vote it down (or up)
Roddick is definitely better than Matteo. Matteo has a better forehand, but Roddick had a better serve, better backhand, better movement, and a bit better touch.
Roddick could be better
Philippoussis played in the fast hard court so he serves and volleys a lot, but Matteo might have better mental at least on grass
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sud4aJ5ltys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sud4aJ5ltys) also one handed backhand like Fed
'Phillapousas or however it’s spelled was a tank in the early 2000’s .He gave everyone nightmares'
Thats a great comparison....Roddick is actually underrated imo with his all round game, he worked hard on his backhand throughout his career
Can anyone else believe that Roland Garros final was only ONE WEEK AGO?
Congrats Matteo for winning Stuttgart Boss Open !
Just read Berrettini has only lost 3 times on grass since 2019 to Djokovic, Federer and Goffin. Very impressive.
I really don't know how to feel right now. I'm happy for Berrettini but Andy :///
You fought well, Murray. Hope he could do his best at Wimbledon.
Dutchman wins on home grass. Boss-sponsered players wins the Boss Open
Sad for Murray I really thought that he was gonna Win the Title this time
Huge Props to Stuttgart DJ. Played amazing tunes all week.
Was playing something with obscene lyrics in this match. Not such a great job.
Edit: Why the downvotes? There was a song earlier with a lyric about “getting my d*** sucked” played loudly at a family event. You approve?
Yea I approve
Whether it's good or not, kids listen to music like that all the time. They're not in their room listening to clean, versions of their favourite songs
For sure. Still a foul up on the part of the DJ. The sound dropped suddenly after that lyric.
I am catching up with this week's matches. Van Rijthoven - what. the. fuck?!
I don't know what's more bizarre about this guy...is it the fact he's 25 (I was 100% expecting to find him be 20-21ish) and suddenly exploding like this...or the fact he's ***never played on grass before?***
Did this guy not realise with his punchy groubdstrokes, slice, big serve and fantastic volleys that...he might be good on grass?! This is seriously weird.
I already love his technique. Best WTA comparison is definitely Jabeur. Compact backswing, punchiness, and he's got the trick shots too. Grass natural. He also reminds me a bit of Roddick. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Now obviously, hes in red hot form. Not hard to see why he's not excelled as much on clay or hard. Not gonna presume anything about his future ranking yet....
...But...he just doesn't look like a lucky player whose had a miracle, way above variance week. He genuinely has a great grass game.
Actually people were saying in the other thread he's known to be pretty good on grass beforehand, so he must have played challengers on grass before.
Apologies of ive got it wrong.
Tennis explorer - which is pretty comprehensive on Challengers (or so I thought) [has this as his first grass event ever](https://www.tennisexplorer.com/player/van-rijthoven/?annual=2021)
I agree that doesn't seem right at all though, lol.
He hadn't actually. This was only his second pro tournament on grass. He played Surbiton challenger last week and lost in the first round of qualies to Otto Virtanen.
He was a quarter finalist at junior wimbledon though.
> lost in the first round of qualies to Otto Virtanen.
Lmao, this is the randomist tournament win ever 😂
[Speaking of random, I saw this viral video with Otto Virtanen in like 2 days ago.](https://youtu.be/Cz9OOtcI_Qs)
Lol Bon Jovi for the victory song 👌
Can't wait to see Matteo in Wimbledon 🥰
I will be surprised if Matteo doesn’t side hustle an Italian restaurant in Stuttgart with his name
If he can't play at Wimbledon that's seriously gonna ruin the tournament a bit for me😔
is Thiem in the audience screaming "cmon Andy"?
Let's gooooo! Obviously a shame Andy was having issues but so so so proud of how Matteo responds to his own injuries. Two months without tennis, surgery, and his first tournament back he gets a title. Fantastico Matteo avanti così!!
Murrary could have used that spinning volley that Sock used on that point where Murrary hit a wild volley.
Daje Berre, great first tourney back
Shame about the injury Muzza, hope it heals up for the rest of the grass season, sad because it was such a great final until then
Great gift from Matteo set 2 to Murray. And now it's a walk in the park
Congrats to World No. 10 Matteo Berrettini on Winning his 6th Tour Title his 2nd Title here at Stuttgart
Murray really prolonging the inevitable
Berrettini hitting to Murray's backhand but I think that's the only shot that actually still works
Andy's 40%, I-can't-move-serve is legit still better than most non-pro's best 1st serve
Better than Zverev's second serve.
Berrettini’s return of serve is actually probably his biggest issue. His backhand is much worse technically but his point construction skills are good enough to minimize its usage and thus the liability it has. However you can’t avoid the return. If he steps it up somewhat he can be a real threat at all the majors.
Edit: and of course the BH return of serve is the worse of the two
Even despite that, he's still a threat at majors. He's made it at least the QFs of the last four majors he's played
He also only lost to Novak in slams last year
Have last year’s Wimbledon points already dropped for everyone?
I think that happens after the tournament.
Not yet. drop date 11th July
No? They come off 52 weeks after they go on.
No, not until next month
Ah ok does that mean Andy Murray’s ranking will go even higher then? To like top 35-40? Given that he made just 3rd round and people who’ve gone further will drop more points
You'd have to check how many points the various players in the 30-50 slot would be defending. There will be a lot of shifting up and down
Dan Evans is the king of Nottingham
I hope he loses. Can’t stand him
Murray's mentality is ridiculous
Good lord, maybe Murray should always use this crap serve if people can't even return it
These serves are still winning points??
I can only think Berrettini really wants to maximise his own game time right now
I love the hawkeye makes players shut up when they are all arms up in the air saying it was in or out.
Berrettini being a good sport and dropping his level too
Edit: spelled Matteo name wrong
*Sad mury goat noises*
Andy doesn't like to retire mid-match, thinks it's disrespectful. Think the only time he's done so was when he snapped a tendon in his wrist in 2007. Even then he got it bandaged and tried to keep playing.
I remember watching that live and he was in so much pain.
Yeah, stopped him dead in his tracks - he was having his best season on clay that year. His forehand was never quite as clean after that.
Story of his career: every time he gets some momentum, something snaps
Volandri was a very good clay court player and he raced into a 5-1 lead iirc
Yeah, Murray was bossing it and kinda cruising when he went for the forehand that did his wrist in
This fucking sucks man
Murray has plenty of grass court prep for Wimbledon. Just retire and pull out of Queens.
No need to risk further injury.
I doubt he will do that unless it's so serious that he has to miss Wimbledon as well.
Andy is literally my hero, and his run this week has been great, but it's times like this I wonder if this is really all worth it. Would hate to see him have to use a wheelchair after he retires.
reminds me of the footballer Gabriel Batistuta, whose struggles post-retirement are [well-documented](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel_Batistuta#Early_and_personal_life)
Anyone else can’t stand Daniel evans?
This is madness, in both a good and a bad way (good, in the sense that even in a 250, if he wins this **like** this it's just a testament to his permanently quality; bad, in the sense that this cannot possibly be good for him short-term for Queen's and Wimbledon, let alone long-term beyond that)
This is sad, it can't be for mury
Andy there’s no shame in retiring so that you’re good to go for Wimbledon 🥺
I'm not sure it's the best decision to continue for Andy ... There are more tournaments to play ☹️
But this is the only final he's got a chance of,?
As of now, but if he's healthy, I don't see why he won't be back in other finals
Yeah, that's a reduced service motion
Matteo, what are you doing - big form drop
Go on man it's time to Bublik/Kyrgios this thing and break out the underarm serves
Panic going on with the organisers at Queens right now
As long as he's not hurting himself more....because I don't wanna see him kill himself over this match.
If he’s reaching up with his hand like that it seems to be an ab injury no?
His body is hanging on for dear life. His mentality is insane
I'm pretty sure he lost the ability to even walk ages ago, he's just in denial
That ain't a good looking walk :/
He always walks like that tbf
Nah, his normal walk is constipated. This was constipated-agassi
He was on such a great run. Even losing this match would overall mean a really positive week. But losing it + injury just sucks
I dont care anymore if Andy loses this final. Just please be healthy for Queens and Wimbledon
I very much doubt he'll be playing tomorrow at Queen's.
At least there's a fortnight until Wimbledon though.
True. Hopefully he’s healthy by then
There goes the hope of a good Wimby run if his body is already giving out.
Wait what just happened. Did he retire?
Not yet but I imagine he does the second he tries to serve
Oh fuck is it his hip or his abs? And if it’s his hip is it his replaced hip? God damnit… I hope he’s okay by Wimbledon, I feel a good run in him
It looks like his left abs
Nah not like this. What a fucking shame. Daje Andy.
Poor Andy, he's injured I think
Did he just retire? Nvm but def getting more treatment.
looks like mto?
