Sinner’s freaky power suits him well on grass
Anybody seen this passing shot by Sinner? Absurd!
Can anyone that’s been to Wimbledon in the last couple of days answer me a question. Are people being asked to show ID at the gates?
Sound's like someone has a fake ID....
But yes. They did the same at RG
They’ll send you to jail for that, be careful bro
Peniston is coming up against stiff competition in Johnson today
After all of these withdrawals due to Covid, I hope one of them doesn't have to pull out at the last minute
A hard matchup for sure!
US tennis fans - is there a site where we can watch condensed highlights of the matches played thus far? ESPN coverage is garbage, plus it's just hard to tune in live (considering the time difference and having to work)
I don't understand why it's so difficult. I just want to watch Cressy FAA highlights.
Would Rafa almost certainly be playing on CC for the rest of the tournament? Or do they sometimes like to change it up and offer someone else CC and he'd play N1?
Everyone plays at least one match away from centre. Usually in R2/R3/R4 because they want them there for the opening match and obviously from the quarters onwards they're the biggest draw. Might be a little different this year without manic monday.
This is why I'd asked, but with quite a few other names dropping out maybe it's less likely this time round.
Given that debenture tickets, corporate hospitality etc. cost almost double on Centre v Court 1 and the lack of other big name players in Rafa's half of the draw, I think he will be on Centre everyday.
I swear if a big name gets C1 tomorrow after we got shafted today.....
Was my thinking, but I know at RG (and maybe the others) he's not always on Philippe-Chatrier, which is their CC.
Looking at the draw it reads like an expanded 500 tournament.
Murray debuting in Laver Cup with Federer and possibly Nadal. Anyone selling tickets? Haha
I think they've added Murray as a good insurance policy for ticket sales if Federer/Nadal have to pull out
I think Casper will lose to Ugo today
He's up against it today, his first real challenge on grass.
Would be nice to see Ugo win. His Halle run last year was excellent.
Yeah, his Wimbledon run in 2019 was impressive too, esp considering his age
Obsessed with van uytvanc lately. Nasty ass slices. Gonna be a doubles champion v soon
Catching up on some matches today. Watching Bektas v Andreescu (Bianca is playing great!). But love to see openly queer players on tour like Bektas. Hoping she gets a moment in the sun
Do you mean gay? Why say “queer”?
I use queer as a more encompassing term
What’s to encompass? You are either same sex attracted, in which case you are bi or gay, or you’re not.
Having blue hair is not a sexuality.
i know this might be an unpopular opinion but i think grass court tennis is boring. the low bounce and very unreliable/unpredictable bounce make it a lottery game pretty much. players can't establish a baseline rally rhythm and every match looks like that godawful zverev/nadal french open SF match in horrible humid conditions.
i rewatched the wimbledon 2008 F's fifth set and that was a total snoozefest after the fantastic fourth set. it turns out only the 4th set in some parts was actually highlights-worthy. only 10-15 points in the fifth set were highlights-worthy. the rest of the 5th set points were won off of unforced errors or complete whiffs. federer actually misses a forehand. swing and a miss. and the first 3 sets were a joke because nadal was playing well while federer was mediocre and nadal should have won that in straight sets especially at 2-0 sets, 3-3, 0-40 on federer's serve (federer held serve here). and this is supposed to be the 'greatest tennis match of all time'? gimme a break. hard and clay courts have much more entertaining matches. on grass you either win as a servebot with 5-to-10-second long points or if your serve is shitty you win 90% of the time on your opponent hitting an unforced error.
Wasn’t going to dignify this with a reply. But. The game tennis is called lawn tennis. It’s the games name. Secondly - tennis isn’t supposed to be 20 shot baseline rallies. That’s what’s boring. The diversity of shots needed to play on grass is what makes it interesting
Barty in the sub banner 🥲
Isnt Vesely playing Fokina in the R2 today?
They’re talking about doubles
Ruud’s quarter looks like a 250. I think the guy with the most recent grass title is Humbert of all people who can barely string a win this season
Ruud is bad on grass though - it’s a good opportunity for everybody in that quarter imo
Is there anyway I can watch Badosa’s full match replay???
ESPN+ has it on-demand
Why the F has Wimbledon not uploaded highlights yet. I want to see the FAA Cressy
wimbledon sucks ass this year. they are even worse than the french open with highlights. they literally have ZERO highlights on the wimbledon youtube channel and also on the wimbledon website.
it sounds like ESPN and BBC hogged all the replay rights and bought it from wimbledon so that even wimbledon can't show any highlights this year.
part of me thinks it might be due to the russians/belarusians ban and the resulting ATP/WTA points ban. maybe the wimbledon youtube channel and wimbledon website need the WTA and ATP's permission to post highlights and that ATP/WTA punishment goes far beyond stripping points??? i know the grand slams are ITF but i wouldn't be shocked if the ATP and WTA have replay broadcasting rights or final say on youtube and streaming sites.
Anyone know how I can rewatch the Serena match? I have ESPN+ but don’t see it on there. I’m so upset I had to work during most of it
Yeah it's weird it is not listed because it was shown on ESPN3 and usually the replay is just there.
In any case, you can watch it by going to the ESPN website. If you go to "Watch">"Schedule&Replays">"Replay" the list of the matches appear. Click on the one that says "The Championships, Wimbledon 2022 (First Round). It should be second from the top under "Tennis." This has all the matches that regular ESPN showed today (Over 10 hours total). Serena's match starts just after the 7 hour mark.
Disappointed in ESPN+. It’s hit and miss as to what you can see.
I just hate that you need 27 different streaming apps to watch tennis in 2022.
Just the French. The other 3 are all broadcast on ESPN.
These are longer highlights I found...
If you have Tennis Channel, they are replaying all the day's matches today. It'll be on after Nadal's match is done (which is currently being shown).
The 2 grass talented wild cards, Tim and Peniston, are through to R2, while Hubi and FAA are out ... not all that surprised TBH, and I hope the 2 wild cards enjoy their time
Hubi going out is not a surprise?
FAA had a tough draw, so that's understandable.
Tbf Hubi had stomach pains and was playing a good player in ADF
I’m happy Serena lost. I was rooting for her obviously but hearing her discuss afterwards how she wants to go back to practice makes me hopeful that she still has the fire in her and that she still wants to keep going. She looked great out there today, no, actually, she looked pretty godamn impressive, tbh, for someone that hasn’t played in a year.
Love you queen! ❤️
go to 6:00. nadal answers about the whole COVID testing 'rules'. there are no rules, LMAO. if you have COVID symptoms you can decide to keep playing as long as you don't test. if you do test after you ask for the test and are positive then you must withdraw. nadal talked like a politician's press secretary here though because that question and his answer were walking on eggshells with regards to so many hot-button topics. it is cool that his english is good enough to where he can talk in circles if needed.
never addressed his selfie with Matteo and if he did request to test
Can we call today Bloody Tuesday?? Unreal
Yeah, I thought he would go deep this year but man Kubler was good and he deserves that win.
Wasn't Kubler a qualifier? I thought I watched him play a Turkish qualifier and was a set down at one point.
Yes he was
What happened to Dimitrov?
Groin. There's a GIF out there on Twitter that shows what happened; he went to serve and landed weirdly and bam, injured.
Wow tough luck, thanks !
Sereana has to face reality. Horrible tennis!
I am glad she came to play. The fitness is beyond the level of someone who hasn't played in a year. Importantly, the desire is still there. The fire is still burning. Let her play as long as she wants. I'm just glad to see her happiness with/without match wins.
It was bad tennis. I mean, that’s a fair point he is making, and if you think for a second 25 year-old Serena doesn’t beat either of those players 1&1, you are lying to yourself.
If you want to qualify it and say “For 41…..” then you have your answer right there. But she played. She earned that right. Good for her.
Except it was not bad tennis. They went 3 sets ending in a tie break and it was a thrilling match, how is that horrible tennis? If you’re saying “horrible compared to her prime” then sure, but she stayed in it and gave us a highly entertaining match. Is she not allowed to play unless she’s crushing her opponents 6-0 6-0? Why can’t we just let her play good tennis without the expectation of winning everything? Why are we using the word “horrible” at all here? Serena has climbed the biggest mountain in women’s tennis and she went higher than anyone has ever gone. Has she not earned the right to come back down on her terms without people calling her tennis “horrible?” Fuck.
Also: this is her first proper match back in a whole year. Remember how bad Rafa was in Mubadala, or Djokovic in Monte Carlo? Players — even GOATS — can’t just come back from a year off and play perfectly.
the wimbledon youtube channel sucks ass. even french open does better with highlights. there are literally ZERO highlights there. bunch of videos of interviews though while they block and ban anybody from posting 5 minute highlight videos.
I can see they're posting highlights on their youtube channel, maybe the ability to view the videos is restricted depending on where you live.
They suck ass though, as they're only 2-4 minutes "long".
I think they do do highlights outside of the UK, the BBC have broadcast rights so they do highlights on iPlayer.
VPN is your friend
https://getoutline.org/en-GB/ people should be using Outline to set up their own VPN if you have your own VPS with your own IP you don't need to worry about your IP being blocked because your VPN provider got found out.
I think there are highlights in the Wimbledon app

So put my money on Casper Ruud is what the prophet is saying?
money, friend? no. waste money not on sport. it is irratic. friend, before i moved to Ft. worthe, i bet on sports.
i was a decent better. i went to decent college and learned some stats and tyhings. I would do my trading based on disruptive players. bob davo has an article on it: [https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5f90cfa5cea33040da9bb063/t/5fc589333570fb44d1c01005/1606781235817/Supplanting+Software+Technologies+-+Bob+Davoli+copy.pdf](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5f90cfa5cea33040da9bb063/t/5fc589333570fb44d1c01005/1606781235817/Supplanting+Software+Technologies+-+Bob+Davoli+copy.pdf)
the lords do not favor such violating of oath. only if you have god skils.
Who the FUCK is Bob Davoli?
Iga winning the Wimbledon should be good news for Nadal fans since every single time Iga has won a grand slam she has won it with Nadal.
So, 2 out of the 22 times. You really see that as an omen?
I’m not sure the sample size is large enough
Give it a decade and it’s going to be a very bad predictive stat unless we are talking anout seniors tour
46-year old Nadal, still winning RGs: I don’t get it
Where does this notion that FAA is a grass god even come from? He definitely has not proved it this year, and overall he has 0 grass titles and 1 Wimbledon quarterfinal. Seems no better than his hard court resume.
So I'm confident no one ever called him a "grass god", but in terms of thinking he would be good on grass it's simple - he made QFs at Wimby, he has a big serve, and he's a good tennis player.
In combination, those things would suggest he should get passed R1, but Cressy is a really dangerous early opponent.
it was a fairytale told by fedtards and noletards who LARPed like nadal was going to lose easily at wimbledon. they want nadal to stay at 22 slams
Think it was mostly because of how great his serve has been.
I think the notions of him becoming a grass god were more aspirational and somewhat exaggerated. Using his past record on grass (QFs at W, a grass final here or there), it showed that he was comfortable with the surface and since this year was all about him climbing some major building blocks, it seemed like he could take a step further.
Look, he actually played excellent today (more aces, more winners, ~~more points~~) but most people do not know how to play against a serve and volleyer like Cressy, on grass in particular, and that was the issue for him. He'll learn next time.
'more aspiratonal and somewhat exaggerated' lolol great phraseology. I'm stealing this for work things
It really turned out to be an unfortunate draw. Outside of a few unseeded players, he seems like a lock to advance past round 1.
Indeed. Cressy was probably top 3 unseeded dangers in early rounds. But sure he can sustain it, but I think he should have been the favorite today for anyone who follows tennis closely.
Very unfortunate draw, definitely. Neither player deserved to bow out so early. This happens at every slam, so unfortunately this was that, but hopefully we get to see more from Felix in 2023.
I'd love to see him at Newport or Hamburg, but maybe he'll make the strategic move of starting his training on the hardcourts early.
He'll be at Newport (took a WC)! I agree he needs to play more to just maintain good confidence and form. If he can do well in Montreal, that would be the cherry on top story that Canada deserves. I hope he can carry all of this momentum from this year onwards.
Hi, does anyone know if there's a bar in London that shows the matches live?
Since someone asked why people tend to root against Serena- here are what I think are the reasons behind it.
1. People tend to root for the underdog.
2. She has a controversial personality
3. American and British commentators tend to overhype their athletes a lot. Just look at an F1 race- the commentators are almost always talking about Hamilton & Russell.
4. America is extremely dominant in sports so you naturally want to root for the little country. The girl with an accent from little old Poland is much easier to see as a hero than the experienced superstar athlete from big powerful USA.
5. Probably some of it is racism too.
You're on point, especially with Hamilton & Russell comparison, lol.
I as a tennis fan can't help but have mad respect for someone with 23 GS titles though, regardless of her political views, off-court behavior, or the media hype.
When Rafa and Roger are playing people hates the underdog then, it's not that. Mostly the number 2 why people don't like her
If by controversial personality you mean tantrums, yes. I pretty much decide what players to root for based on sportsmanship and how they behave - after all, they're all good at tennis.
no...it's because of her temper tantrums in USO semifinals and finals
it isn't hard to find the videos. are you really shocked why many fans don't like serena? they don't say anything at all about her sister venus who is cool as a cucumber and never has temper tantrums on court. how is it 'racist' if they don't ever say anything bad about venus?:
She’s been playing professional tennis for 27 years and you’re hung up on two meltdowns? Tell us about how perfect *you* are. Being the best at something comes with a lot of pressure, and sure she’s cracked a few times. She’s actually usually a pretty good sport and has been throughout her career. Are these few outbursts really that unforgivable?
I dun think it's all that complicated, it's mostly #2 that people don't like her. No need to pull the nation and race cards
i don't get how it is 'racist' when the serena critics NEVER say a single negative thing about her sister venus, who is always calm, well-behaved, and never does any crazy screaming and verbal abuse shit like serena does
venus is the epitome of a great sportswoman. serena is the GOAT if you only talk about her athletic ability and trophies.
Venus hasn't won nearly as much as Serena
Neither is Serena
Who’s this blond announcer taking to Chris Fowler??
Former #1 Caroline Wozniacki?
Only Serena has the power to be the top trend on Twitter with all the shit that’s going on in the country rn
I’m shocked nobody I’ve seen reference that her name is Tan and she’s from France! Tan France! Cmon people
I'm so sad that both of the Ukrainians women are going to Play against eachoter tomorow and that all 3 of Polish women are playing against seeds. I don't like this draw, lol
Both Ukrainian women? There are three Ukrainian women through birthday girl Kostyuk beat Katie Swan today.
I agree it's sad they have to meet each other, especially since Anhelina is using her Wimbledon money to rebuild her parents home.
The only thing worse than RG's youtube highlights is Wimbledon's youtube highlights...or lack thereof.
RG and W decided to team up and give us nothing (I mean, RG did have regular highlights but much less of an assortment than like, 2018, for example). Absolutely not trying at all. It's actually shocking what they're doing. They really do not care about anything, do they? They're depending on Twitter clips of match points to justify "highlights"? Or having to navigate their app and find the highlights there? I'm disgusted.
It's really sad because the AO actually figured out the right formula for YouTube highlights this year. Is it that difficult to just copy what they did?
Difference between capitalist / progressive society vs socialist / imperialist society. Still don’t get what’s so hard about posting highlights to YouTube. Every damn sport does it except W and RG. They Suck.
god just throw this sport in the trash and start over. there are so many ways the sport just does not do things the same way between all of the fractures in the bureaucracy and why is any of that even necessary? #tennisunited not really
Ahaha yeah I'm 100% on board with your rant, take this shit right here: https://instagram.com/stories/biancaandreescu_/2870864766848877480?utm_source=ig_story_item_share&igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
We need an Apple or Amazon to just buy the broadcasting rights for all of tennis, but that is an insane proposition because they would have to negotiate with at least 8 separate tennis bodies
Burn it down. Start over.
I recall someone else said that tennis should have a commissioner. I know that's a bold take for how broad and global this sport is, but....even without a commissioner, some unity would be really very much appreciated.
And yeah I saw that Bianca tweet. It's annoying over and over again. Before we even talk about why women's tennis has less prize money on tour, the fact that their matches don't have the same broadcasting privileges is already a bigger issue -- how can we attempt to boost the women's game if we simply ignore it? Anyways, thanks for the solidarity lol
>Anyways, thanks for the solidarity lol
No problem, I just dislike it when tennis is actively shooting itself in the foot like this.
The Commish idea is interesting. You see how effective the ATP and WTA chairman and CEO are when it came to reacting on behalf of their tours re: the Wimbledon Russian ban, or in the WTA's case, with pulling out of China. Strong leadership exists, its just silo'd and without jurisdiction across the sporting body.
Hope serena plays USO and some warm ups. Maybe at some smaller tournaments like DC or silicon valley
That would make more sense then taking a year off and jumping right into Wimbeldon
Did anyone else notice that when Tan stopped all the slicing was when Serena just rolled over her? Then when she started again she went on to win.
I think a lot of players are vary of that coz Serena at one time was really good at generating her own pace while returning and that could inevitably lead to a winner off a slow ball. But age, exhaustion and lack of competition means that her returns have become more erratic leading to far more ue's. A bit more match practice on grass and she could have calibrated her returns a lot better. We saw how quickly she gets into a rhythm in Eastbourne even at this age, there's no reason it couldn't have happened again!
True. I am guessing here but based on my own knees i reckon getting down to those low bouncing slices is going to be murder at 40... But then I'm a fat 40 year old bloke with a 20 year old reconstructed ACL and standing up is murder on my knee.
What struck me is that it took Tan almost 5 games in the first set to realize how to crush Williams. It wasn't **that** hard to read, was it?
I don't understand why she stopped doing it for all the 2nd set and half the 3rd set.
I guess that can of Redbull during the bathroom break gave her a bit too much steam to *not* hit the ball with everything she got for half of the third set.
Raducanu between Djokovic and Murray on Centre Court AGAIN tomorrow.
What is Wimbledon organisers obsession with this sandwich?
Yh it's annoying. Got C1 tickets tomorrow. And though atleast one of those 3 would get a c1 appearance. But nope.
They even put alcaraz on c2, which is annoying
Bit bummed about Alcaraz. Glad to see Norrie but if I'm honest I'll probably try go down to see Peniston first rather than be too bothered with the Kontaveit game. Although I'd like to see the end of Pliskova's... choices choices!
Edit: I take it back, forgot court 3 is also ticketed :(
I mean people who go to center court are generally pretty casual and rich they just want to be seen to see the players they have heard of.
It's appealing to their vanity for cash, simple as that.
True, but they could at least alternate Murray and Norrie on center vs court 1, he’s the British number one.
Pretty standard for popular Brits to be on centre court. They'll probably play some of their matches on No. 1 too if they get through this round, the top seed normally plays the third or fourth round on No. 1. Konta never got the same treatment though :(
Exactly! Is Emma and Andy going to Play all their matches at the center court. There are so many names that desserves this court too
What happened to Fair Play I wonder. In scant supply at the All England Tennis Club.
Not talking about Djokovic , but there are 9 other women ranked higher than Rads who need to also play on CC
They will put on what the ticket holders want to watch - especially those in the box and debenture ticket holders who pump hundreds of thousands of pounds into the club. Strongly believe that all players should only play on centre twice max in the opening week.
I don't think its unfair - given how Emma reacted to playing on Centre Court last year, they'd keep her off it if they were doing it for her.
All slams put their nationals on prime courts
There are also far less security / crowd control issues with putting the most popular players on Centre / C1 at Wimbledon.
Don’t think she was on center last year. They kept saying yesterday was her CC debut.
Amazing how your mind fills in gaps - could've sworn it was CC. Thanks
Wimbledon womens draw is wide open now with the Serena upset
lol nobody expected her to do well after a year of absence. It's like with Stan, Roger or Domi at this point unfortunately. Yes we are looking forward to their matches and root for them but let's be honest, we're not surprised by a R1 loss
Straight Sets Matches Day 2 Wimbledon [Not including retirements/continued matches]
26/34 WTA (81.25%)
20/35 ATP (57.14%)
Overall = 66.66%
Due some longer matches…
Pretty high numbers
Let’s go Ons, Coco or Bibi. Rest of the gworlz are dead to me
no. you must root for my Roumanian princesses. Halep, Cirstea, Buzărnescu, Andrescu, Raducanu, Bara, Bogdan. RIP to the God-lady Ruse. RIP to my boy Radu (Albot). Alternatively, I humbly request you to transfer your heart's allegiance to the Ladies' One-Handed Backhand Street Gang, all of whom have survived Round 1 Assassination attempts: Diane Parry, Viktorjia Golubic, and Tatiana Maria.
Oh shit I forgot she has the best draw. Yessss Penko
Threw $50 on Harmony Tan during the first set at +450 pretty good profit there
Harmony Tan is the real deal on day 2!
Poor Harmony Tan. She’s become people on the internet’s enemy no. 1 for beating Serena.
Yeah, I'm just discovering twitter tennis stans... And I prefer staying on reddit.
??? everyone here is congratulating her.
where you hanging out?
I’m not talking about here. But from people on social media and the like.
I wonder how many hate messages she'll receive tonight.
Some? Not a lot. Serena though, gamblers will be all over her social media.
Serena almost winning a 3+ hour match after a year out at 40… a lot of positives to take from today, even though I’m gutted. Congrats to Harmony, she fought so hard today and was a worthy winner!
Pls play NY, Serena 😩
I’m proud of Serena and her fight she didn’t play any single before this and tried her hardest… it sadly wasn’t enough
I missed the match did Serena just make too many unforced and double faults?
So many unforced errors.
It was an honestly bad play from both. Serena technically didn't play badly but it was nowhere near her level. It was basically on her racquet the entire time but when you don't dictate play it's up in the air. Both didn't dictate play so it was pretty low-level tennis. Both wouldn't have made it into the next rounds without a serious improvement.
It was a pretty ugly match from both sides
we're still in shock. who knows.
but there is this:
Wait what???? All in all she usually needs a loss to propel her inspiration, but I’ll have to watch I guess.
I mean, she won a set 6-1, the other sets were 7-5 and 7-6, that’ll usually result in her winning more points
**Prediction**: We will get a repeat of the French Open final between Ruud and Nadal. Ruud stuns everyone by making the semi-finals and makes an astounding upset by beating Djoker in straight sets. Djoker complains afterwards that Ruud screamed 'JAAAA!' in his face in the locker room after the match. Ruud folds to Nadal in the final.
You heard it here first!
Found my Dad’s Reddit account
That is high praise! Dad jokes are peak humor!
Why does play get suspended at around 2230
I think it's a noise related law.
UK has fairly strict noise pollution restrictions between 11pm and 7am, the site's in a fairly residential area and I think they want to keep a good relationship with the locals. The queue can sometimes extend all the way into the residential roads so I can see why it could be a pain.
it's 11pm officially, in fact a Murray match once finished at 11:03pm.
Because of that egregious transgression of the 11pm curfew rule the local Wimbledon Council have promised their posh residents they will be extra strict in future, even if it makes them look like idiots the world over..
Because the wealthy grey-haired old fools who live in Wimbledon don't like noise after 11pm.
Also Wombles are a protected species and there are laws to protect their delicate sleeping patterns.
Fucking hate nimbys
