Whoa - comfortable win against a very good player. I thought Zheng is a dark horse and she gave Rybakina one of the better perfomances going out 7-6 7-5. Ons J is in trouble if rybakina plays like this.
Rooting for Rybakina in the final just to see what her reaction would be if she won
Solid game for Elena! Hope she gets better and better.
All.the comments about Rybakina being born in Russia are pretty gross tbh even if your intention is to point out how you don't agree with the ban. It implies that we are permanently tied to our country of birth or origin, and always have "dual allegiance" It's what fuels xenophobia and anti immigrants sentiments. You should stop because it's a sucky way of thinking about people and their autonomy but also because it actually runs counter to your point.
Wimbledon and the UK government were the ones that made that implication. Not the people pointing out the irony.
People pointing it out are using the same logic when doing so. Wimbledon banned people representing Russia. People here are saying that people of Russian descent upend that. I've heard the same about Anisimova who is very much American and has nothing to do with Russia at all. It's a bad argument that only increases that kind of thinking.
These players weren't representing Russia. They all were playing under no flag already
The irony of two players representing countries that are friendly with the Russian Federation reaching the finals of a tournament where Russian players are banned is not the same as a powerful state acting on pure Russophobia and turning a tennis tournament into war propaganda.
We're speaking through each other because that is not at all what I said. So let's just end this here. Enjoy the end of the tourney!
For sure! I'm just fucking around my friend! Viewing tennis through the lens of nationality is kinda ridiculous anyways.
Rybakina just punished that Halep serve makes you wonder why others couldn't do the same.
So Wimbledon bans all Russian players just so a Russian born player can be in the final. Makes perfect sense.
Let me get this straight. The final will be contested between a Russian, with citizenship in a country that's friendly with Russia, against a player from another country with strong economic ties to Russia that also isn't participating in sanctions.
What if the winner uses their platform to denounce NATO!?!? Could you imagine?
You can't script this type of drama!
Criticize the govt and organizers, not the players who just want to play and qualify.
OK. The Western governments pushing to ban everything Russian are wrong for turning a tennis tournament into war propaganda.
The result: Two pro Russian countries represented in the final.
Again, they should not hate on the participant who qualified.
Of course not. It's ironic that the players in the final represent states that are friendly with the RF, in a tournament where players from the RF are banned. That's all!
And jabeurs hubby is half russian too lol.
You're kidding me.
Im happy rybakina won because whoever wins the final gets their first slam title!
Crushed for Simona, but it would be sweet justice for Elena to lift the trophy and force Wimbledon to come face to face with their hypocrisy
Hypocrisy? Context please?
Elena was born and lives in Russia
She is not representing Russia on the tennis stage tho
As a representative of Kazhakhstan, hopefully she's able to use this platform to speak out against the US,, which is currently threatening her adopted country over sanctions and supported an attempted coup there just seven short months ago.
Wimbledon worst nightmare coming true!
US invasion ok, Russian invasion bad.
If Elena wins and the Russian-born headline clings on the British Press will vilify Russia some more by sensationalising the story of Russia not supporting Elena when she was starting to play professionally.
Well! Surprised by this result ngl.
so many losses in semifinals for Simo this year, I guess I should have expected it :(
So they will be presenting the trophy to a Russian afterall lolz
karma's a bitch
THIS ISSA GOOD DAY FOR THE MOST GLORIOUS NATION OF KAZAKHSTAN
So Rybakina's coach is notoriously vocal (perhaps distracting to his player and even borderline verbally abusive) during WTA events. Here, he's not allowed to coach from the box. Think there's a lesson in that?
She seems so sweet and quiet, this sounds horrible for her
Her coach is toxic, always shaking his head in disgust when Rybakina is missing shots.
A russian in the final
how the turn tables.........
I know people love the Big 3 on the men's side but I love the unpredictability of the women's game and knowing that we'll have a first time Major winner now.
Yeah man WTA is just like my wife
Althougu tbf Jabeur and Rybakina are hardly completely 'random'. Jabeur was 2nd favourite for the title pre-tournament, and Rybakina has been on the rise the past two years, top 20. Both are also known to be two of the best grass courters in the WTA, having both reached the QFs last year.
Yeah. Jabeur's been a steady force last year and a superstar this year. Rybakina was primed for a great 2020, unbeatable pre-AO and losing to Barty at AO, and then covid hit and everything went to hell.
I'm very excited for this final.
I want to see her reaction wining a slam
"I'm very happy and looking forward to the next match". Our new bot!
Wow rybakina is a tall giant
You get two types of tall players. Gangly and awkward like Pliskova or elegant and graceful like Rybakina.
Rybakina almost looks excited. She must be thrilled. lol
That return really took me by surprise, match over earlier than expected
Wait it is already over? how long was the entire game?
Great win and that last winner was 🔥
Jabeur and Rybakina last played in Chicago in October on hard courts. But Rybakina had to default after the 1st set so not really any indication for what'll happen on Saturday.
Rybakina played so incredible. Congrats to her.
A Russian born player in a tournament that banned Russian players. Plot twist
Pulls out her Russian flag and wears it as cape before accepting the trophy from the Royals
Oh wow I missed all of this drama of Wimbledon banning Russian players.
It's all about flags, no Russian flag and you're golden. Not sure why they wouldn't let the Russians play neutral if they wanted though.
If I'm not wrong people connected to Wimbledon commented that it was also due to the fact that Russia, like most of the nation's in the world, are proud of their sportsmen, thus they want to show their supporters that their beloved tennis players are not welcomed in the biggest event in tennis. From this perspective it makes sense, because hey, russian propaganda makes people think everything is ok and the west is wrong, but as much as Kreml would try, they would not be able to block the information that russian tennis players don't play at Wimbledon. Maybe some ruzzkies will start to question a bit if everything is so cool as a cucumber in their country.
I’m guessing Russian players get funding from the Russian Tennis Federation, therefore they will get a portion of the prize money. Whereas with Rybakina, she is funded by Kazakhstan, so there’s no chance any money goes to Russia
Interesting point. Is that still the case for established and privately funded/coached players like Daniil?
That's a strong ass Russian accent if I've ever heard one
I was looking forward to Ons - Halep final
Same bro, but this one's good too
Holy crap, she's legit emoting ❤️
Simona could have made this closer with better serving but honestly she had no match for Elena's power
She could have mixed it up more rather than try to out rally Elena. But yea that serve wasn’t good enough.
Rybakina was completely on fire today
Thank you Ryba for avenging AA
Rybakina played with courage and was fearless. (though she said she was quite nervous)
Rybakina says she was quite mentally prepared. She will face Ons Jabeur on Saturday.
Jabeur vs Elena should be an awesome final if they're both on, although nerves will definitely play into it
Last two points by Rybakina were crazy. I wanted a Halep- Ons final and would have been happy if either won and now want Ons to somehow survive this
Rybakina v Jabeur should be a good final!
god, what a depressing match. Simona's serve completely abandoned her.
Elena’s sisters crying for her. Heart-warming to see.
Gutted for Simona
matches like this i wish women's play bo5 huhuhu i am sooo sure simona can still hang in there 😭😭😭😭😭 i am sooo saaaad ahhhhh 😭😭😭😭😭
Never beaten Halep b4. What a time to do it!!! Congrats. Fulfilling the promising talent we have all seen
The post you commented on got deleted btw ... Something is up with reddits autofilter so it got deleted
Wild scenes when a Russian wins Wimbledon lmao
i wonder if simona tried to get back with cahill for coaching before reaching out to morgatolu
What a return to close the match. Simona never looked like a challenge at any point in the match. Sad to see her walk away so fast after the defeat
What a way to win! Such a confident performance. I started out neutral but I couldn’t help rooting for Elena
Wow that was an almost flawless performance. GOAT return to end it
Rybakina embraced her full Davenport big hitting destiny and I’m so proud of her.
What a fucking return to win the match
Rybakina is through to the final. Well-done!
Wow Halep loved double faulting
ELENA RYBAKINA Wimbledon Finalist! What a performance against the former champion!
My Russian queen
lol Simona dipped hella quickly
Bye grunty 👋
Stop being mean to simo
Why Simo?? Whyyyy!!!! :(
That was fucking beautiful from Rybakina
horrendous serving performance from halep made this a tough watch. rybakina played well but there was no reason for halep to give up three breaks this set with double faults in each game. so, so disappointed.
She served like me last night in my league match. She still got a better scoreline than me though lol
Wow did not expect this result at all but yay Elena!
This match flew by ngl. Brilliant performance
Aw, look how happy she is
Elena is far better than I thought but Haleps serves haven't even been challenger tier today.
Never seen such a garbage serving performance from Halep
Holy shit Ryba!!!
what a return to end match and go into finals
WTF that matchpoint
simona got froze up for sure
Wow. Just effortless…
Match point !!!!!
from 40-15, match pt rybakina. well, go jabeur i guess
You can hear the difference in sound between elena and simona's shots
Halep has won 2 grandslams and still plays more nervous than someone who only has 2 minor titles. Jeez
This is the definition of pressure on the better player.
OMGGGGG match point
Yikes, DFs for dayyys
a 9th fucking double fault. goddamn it simo
Jesus Haleps serves
My gosh Rybakina's shots are beautiful!!!
121mph ace out wide...
Come on Simona at least make her serve it out
Lena is more than just her serve today. Great hands at net!
Wow that backhand from Rybakina is a stunner
Love how you can hear the crowd's admiration for some of Ryba's rocket aces.
Anyone from Kazakhstan here?
Yep. Let’s fucking go, get in
We are all from Kazakhstan this blessed day
Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium, all other countries have inferior potassium!
Just 1 more game!! Come on!
One more game. Come On Elena!
I'm in love with that serve.
Holy shit, Rybakina serving harder than Nadal did yesterday
rybakina a game away. simo had her chances this set but that serve just let her down so hard
simona is that exchange student who keeps things really low-key and is always really nice to you when you ask her questions and then when the grades come out later, you realize that she's been crushing everyone in the curve the whole time in-between skype calling her boyfriend back home while the other exchange students have been hyper visible on campus
Rybakina needs a bigger second serve. Shouldn't be able to serve 121mph serves like that on 1st serve but hit in the 70's on second serve.
Something she has in common with Naomi. WTA players really hold back on their second serves.
I felt like in Us Open last year I really saw a lot of players hit some faster second serves. I think even Raducanu was hitting bigger on her second serves in that Us Open run which I felt helped her a lot during that tournament. But currently in Wimbledon I noticing a lot of 70's. Halep vs Anisimova yesterday hit 2x 66mph serves in a row.
Or just hit two first serves
Chrissie not even being subtle in her Halep fandom lol
You have to admire her commitment to her preconceived narrative, actual events of the day be damned
Despite making more qfs than all her fellow semi -finalists here, this match is a perfect example of why Simona Halep has just two grand slams. At this stage, she feels the pressure of being the favourite. The moment things start going wrong she unravels. Constant muttering, beating her thighs, stuck behind the baseline, couldn't find a 1st serve if her life depends on it.
Crowd is starting to side with Halep.
Fam the match is nearly over
🐟kina clearly the superior player. Halep just reacting really.
rybakina gifted her the break back and simo had to go and double fault another break away :(
Halep has 14 winners 14 errors this match and 8 of those errors are double faults, let that sink in.
Atleast if Rybakina wins it would once again show the hilarious stupidity of their policy.
Wimbledon banning Russians and belarusians
If simo doesn’t break here… it’s over
Gotta bring your serve on grass (unless you’re Rafa)
Is it just me or has rybakina won 0 points when at the front of the court lol
Lol! She just won one!
Rybakina is scared of this (specific) comment.
Halep needs to pray that Rybakina gets tight serving for the match. No way she has a chance if Rybakina serves like her previous game
Yup, let's see how Rybakina deals with nerves and some stress
Wonder what the people in charge of Wimbledon are thinking of potentially having a Russian in the final!
I would be hilarious if she dedicated her win to Putin and Wimbledon for allowing Russians to play and win the tournament.
Then as a follow up announced she is happy to donate all profits to people of Ukraine if Wimbledon does the same
BBC gonna trot out the President of Kazakhstan for the post match interview
Let's see how she deals with some stress first.
They don't care, else she'd be banned?
The ban isn't about being Russian, it's about representing Russia
Kinda, but they wouldn't let Russians play under a neutral (or no) flag either
I think there's a difference (sportswashing wise) between actively choosing to represent another country, and being forced to play without a flag but still being part of your country's federation. Everyone knows what neutral means, it was a cop out when the IOC did it over doping too.
now why can’t you play like that every game simo?? might be too little too late 😔
simona doesn't like to be outgunned from the baseline but she is going to need to mix it up i think
What a game from Halep
Let's go Halep! Halep! Halep!
The thought of Rybakina — Jabeur as a slam final pairing just feels wrong. They’re both good players, but a match between those two in a slam final? I mean… it feels more like a 500 final.
It’ll be a fun match. Both are playing well right now. What they didn’t achieve doesn’t make a difference
I mean how can players gain Fame if you think them making the final makes it an equivalent of a 500? Ryba is 23 and Ons is like 27-28. Ons is late bloomer so ofc her start is gonna come much later.
Let them make finals and rack titles. Then they'll start feeling deserved of making the Slam finals.
Ons is literally a B2B WTA 1000 champion and finalist. She also just won Another 500 on Grass going into Wimbledon. And Ryba is Quarterfinalist from last year in Wimby and RG. They are good players and Ons is literally World no. 2.
This year Jabeur has won a masters 1000 and reached the final of another. Rybakina’s most recent big result is losing the bronze medal in Tokyo. This is at the very least a 1000 final
Not their fault your favourite players bowed out early on
FINALLY SHE MOVED IN TO THE NET!
I mean Ryba missed the Volley but atleast she tried?
As a Halep fan don’t see how she wins this match if Rybakina level doesn’t drop massively. Maybe change pace of some shots try some low slices even though she doesn’t really like them. Or you know unlock the movement, power and aggressiveness she had against Serena in the 2019 final
Man that ball looked out
The gulf between Ryba and Simo’s serve today has been enormous
It’s like the difference between an average 18yo and 13yo club player
I don’t think it’s a great idea to moonball any Romanian player lol
where was this halep when serena was in the final in 2019 😭
No but really 😭😭
this is genuinely the worst serving performance i’ve ever seen from her. it’s very unlikely that she plays like this.
What a clutch game from Ryba. Her level had dropped and Halep let her back in front with those DFs
Lol what, no way they're rallying with 100+ mph shots
if halep were playing even medium strength this would be a battle of a set. the double faults are just ruining this match. so upset
i am actually crying ahhh i want simona to win so baaad 😭😭😭
Stated watching Wimbledon only after I heard she made it to sf. Never again
Oh hey Ryba remembered she can hit Unreturnables too
OOTL, why does everyone hate Patrick?
1. He's seen (fair or not) as being overly interested in promoting himself and his brand
2. Involvement in the famous Serena-Osaka USO incident
3. Punchable face
