This thread is gonna be wild today! Happy finals to you all !
Damn, I didn't even realize Barty had retired from tennis? I must've been sleeping. Only 26 y.o. that's pretty crazy
Borg retired at 26 too with 11 GS titles. Some legends just want to pursue other things.
Wow. I didn't know that either. Yeah, I suppose. Pretty impressive choice to make for players of that caliber, to not allow something so grand to define your life and identity.
Does anyone know if men's final will be ESPN plus or just regular cable ESPN? Want to make sure I am prepared to be able to stream it
It’s on regular ESPN in Western US through YouTube tv at least. I’m looking at it starting at 6am in my guide right now. Should probably go to sleep so I can wake up for this thing.
Someone protect Nadal from Fiziev
I think we get a calm nick and djoker wins in 4.
How much do you think the film crew and contract will guide him today?
I think this is a realistic prediction
75% right lol
Does anyone know when the Citi Open draw will be final, at least for the main entries? Is Medvedev going to play in that? If it's undecided, when would we know by? Thanks!
Med is currently entered in Los Cabos that week instead. The entries are below. There will be a few wildcards given in the next couple weeks, and players can (and some will) withdraw at any time, but otherwise the field is set.
Thanks! I missed the Mexico news, good to know.
Too early for draw which is usually released a few days before tournament; the entry list is on website and Rublev, Fritz, Shapo, Opelka, Murray, Krygios are listed. First time since 2019 there's a WTA event including Halep, Vika, Raducanu, Fernandez, Tomljanovic, Bouzkova and Kaia the Great Kanepi.
Yeah it will be good I am planning on going to it, didn’t know Medvedev has signed up for Los Cabos though instead.
I think it’s possible nick could go up 2 sets to love with his unconventional shots. Novak has never won a set in their two best or 3 meetings.
2017 Novak was in a bad state.
That’s a good point.
Nick wins the first set, loses the second, gets broken in the third, has a tantrum, and racks up a code violation or 2 en route to a 4 set loss
Do we know yet who the chair umpire is for the men's final tomorrow? Feel like I should light a candle for them.
Please be Carlos Bernardes, the universe needs to make it happen for Kyrgios' one and only slam final🙏
Me estas diciendo una barbaridad!
He is awesome.
I'm gonna guess James Keothavong.
I want a competitive match tomorrow but I'm not expecting Nick to really put up a fight. Would love to see it go to 5 but I'm expecting Novak to pull out all stops since it's the final and Nick never having been to a GS final before...yeah.
Nick is star struck, he is over the moon just for being in the final, and is hoping Djokovic will actually invite him for dinner.
Here to drop a gratuitous dose of Ons Jabeur copium a la my post following her early French Open defeat (about how Serena had a great 2012 anyways by winning W and USO and ended the year with lots of momentum).
So let's compare Ons's Slam breakthrough and impact to that of Li Na in 2011 (which is slightly incongruous because Li Na was *really* pushing through in the Slams in the years prior, but anyways). Li Na was the underdog (rankings-wise and experience-wise) against Clijsters at the 2011 AO but her making the final was a landmark achievement for Chinese (and Asian) women's tennis. She took the set 6-3 and looked to be heading into a nice win but then faltered for the next two sets 3-6, 3-6. She successfully carried her determination to win her first Slam at the very next one: RG. Now, Ons was not the underdog this time, but she did also falter in her first Slam final after taking the first set 6-3 and then lost the next two sets, whose scores were the same. So...New York, anyone? #illuminaticonfirmed
Djokovic going to curb stomp in 3 sets. You heard it here first
My wild (don't take this too seriously) prediction for Sunday's match: Kyrgios loses the first two sets in fairly standard fashion, everyone thinks it will just be a easy Djokovic runaway. Then Kyrgios will limp on to the third set tiebreaker, where he inches it out. Novak lapses as a result and Kyrgios then takes the fourth, leading to an epic 5th set, most likely ending in a super tiebreaker. Novak gets the early lead but pressure of grand slam count surprisingly gets to him, as Kyrgios makes an improbable comeback and wins from two sets down.
To be honest it makes more sense to me Novak going down 2 sets. He’s struggled in the past with guys that hit unconventionally. It’s just he ends up pulling it out in a long dragged out match cause those guys can’t keep up with his endurance and have holes in there game.
Just so you know, none of the Big 3 has ever blown a 2-0 set advantage in a GS final. Not once in 90+ finals. This of course does not prove it cannot happen.
This scenario seems kinda reasonable
Sports news all over the spanish speaking world are already running the headline: Russian wins Wimbledon
This is weird that this comment is getting downvoted. Isn't Denny here just reporting a fact to the comment section?
I guess people over here don't like this fact
Number of those kinds of articles if Wimbledon didn't impose the ban = 0
The Brits gave the propaganda to the Russians on a silver plater handed by the Duchess herself.
Exactly, the content of the articles is always the same: Russian wins despite ban. That's why it's interesting that a russian won
**BTW, I see people are downvoting me, you want proof?**
-T: A Russian is the champion of Wimbledon: Elena Rybakina comes back against Jabeur and wins her first grand slam
-T: The Russian Rybakina wins Wimbledon
-T: A Russian sneaks into Wimbledon's final
-T: Elena Rybakina, the Russian who represents Kazakstan wins Wimbledon
-T: The russian tennis player who became the surprise champion in Wimbledon
-T: Elena Rybakina, russian-born Kazakh tennis player wins wimbledon
-T: Russia affrims they've won Wimbledon after win by Kazakh tennis player
-T: "We've won Wimbledon"; celebrations in Russia
You get the gist. I wanted to show the spanish speaking world as a sort of neutral observer (although obviously we side with the western world generally)
Two years in a row with an Australian in the singles finals. Plus 3/5 finals this year have Australians playing!
Congrats to Ebden/Purcell on their mens doubles title. Australian tennis is in a good place!
Some interesting matches from the Newport 250 tournament (grass)
Andy Murray x Sam Querrey
Radu Albot x Jack Sock (whoever wins gets Bublik)
Tim Van Rijthoven x Qualifier (whoever wins gets Cressy)
Jiri Vesely x Feliciano Lopez
Peter Gojowczyk x Ugo Humbert (whoever wins gets Isner)
I really didn't want to watch, but that lineup is juicy. 🤔
Does rybakina only need to be top 20 in the wta finals race to enter now
WTA doesn’t have that rule. Recent example is Stephens who won USO 2017 but didn’t qualify for the WTA finals since she didn’t play the first half of the year.
not a hundred percent sure, but i think that rule only applies to atp :/
as her coach said though, points come and go a slam is forever
Nothing to take from Rybakina. Ons would have playyed wat better if she was underdog like against halep or kvitova or idk ‘wanna say swiatek but she is not good on grass’
I think the pressure of playing a gs final just got to her. The mid-set collapse is something that often happens with her but normally she's able to pick herself up for the final set which is not what happened this time.
Ons an underdog against Kvitova? What fucking year do you think this is?
Been watching some compilations on TennisTV and I can't believe it's almost a year since that amazing Zverev Tsitsipas toilet gate in Cincinnati.
“The women’s game has set a high standard for “unbelievable” first-time Grand Slam champions recently. In 2021, an unseeded doubles specialist, **Barbora Strycova**, won Roland Garros, and a teenage qualifier, Emma Raducanu, won the US Open in one of her first professional events.”
Well done Tennis.com. A place for tennis journalism can’t even proof read and get Krejcikova’s name down lol.
Ebden / Purcell will both remain outside of the Top 30 in men’s doubles because of the removed ranking points. Sucks for them. The ranking point ban really did nothing but hurt players who did well at Wimbledon.
wow, Rybakina cried in the press conference. She is cute.
Does anyone know which of the two finals on center court will be played first tomorrow?
Men's singles first 14:00 BST
It amazes me Djokovic blew a 5-2 lead even if it's against the clay GOAT. VAMOS!
Ons Jabeur's post match press conference was great. She really does seem like a humble, funny and upbeat person. She will have gained a lot more fans with this final. I wish her the best of luck moving forward.
she is always positive that is a cool trait to have
Can anyone recommend me a good iOS app for tennis scores?
Someone check on Tsitsipas if Kyrgios wins tomorrow
Ebden and Purcell sounds like a law firm specialising in divorce
punk ass reporter "do you condemn the war and putin's actions"
rybakina "sorry my english is not the greatest . i represent kazakhstan"
that dumb-fuck journalist should be named and shamed
Tennis journalists really are fucking stupid
Jfc. She lives in Moscow. Journalists : "please say something that could put your family in danger"
Onya boys !!! Aussie Aussie Aussie🇦🇺 What an amazing tournament !!!
Wimbledon champions about to lift the trophy and give a speech after a 4+ hour match. ESPN: that was fun we gotta go sry ttyl
Maybe have it on an ESPN stream? ESPN: nah
ESPN you’re breaking my heart!!
Espn just cut out of coverage right before trophy ceremony?!?!?
why has bbc cut over to two fucks chatting about the womens singles which ended over 5 hours ago
So they could finish at the scheduled time. They really need to look at the scheduling of Today at Wimbledon next year.
Seriously, FUCK ESPN
What a match. It’s 6am here in Aus, totally worth it!
Congratulations, to you and all Australians! 🇦🇺👍🏼
rybakina's press conference if anyone wants to watch
anyone know what she said after she started crying? after "You wanted to see emotion"
i think "kept it too long" as in she kept it inside for too long :)
gutted for them. so much fight playing with broken hand only to lose in fifth set tie breaker. they really should've closed it after first break.
Honestly, when Ebden/Purcell had that horror show game on serve late in the fifth set (missed two easy volleys, gave away break points), they needed to seize the initiative then
When's the last time Australians won both the men's doubles and singles at Wimbledon I wonder?
Emerson/Laver and Newcombe in 1971?
Ok. Now going into fasting and prayer for Kyrgios to pull off the upset of his life
Drinking 4 Loko and playing CoD for Nick to win.
im rooting for nick. bc at the end of the day, nole is an anti vaxx liar
Yeah, of the two, I consider Nole by far worse.
Well, I’m not going to pretend kyrgios is a good person. I just love chaos
i agree he isnt. im just so vehemently anti anti vax weirdos
For the 100th time, he's not anti vax. He never said anything against the vaccine and there were even vaccination boots in the event he held in Serbia. However he is not vaccinated. Not because he's against the vaccination, but because Novak is absolutely insane in how he treats his body. His diet and even what he drinks are monitored like maybe nobody else on earth. It even took him months before he agreed to have a surgery that was inevitable.
I can concede that he’s not anti-vax
I also get that he’s extremely cautious and superstitious about injecting/putting stuff into his body.
However the alternative is him getting Covid which has been proven to be significantly more dangerous than the vaccine. So his justification about not getting the vaccine seems to contradict itself—since he’s effectively putting his body at a greater risk when he invariably contracts cocos which he did
1. He already got COVID, so that risk is a sunk cost.
2. He is not perfectly rational about this. So sue him I guess. I think you have the right to be irrational about your own body.
1. There's still a very real risk associated with getting it again, especially since the last time he got it was back in December
2. Sure, I agree.
I'm not here to defend his view. I just wanted to make it clear that he's not an anti vax.
Happy for the Aussies. Plus they walk away with about USD $325,000 each!
prize money at wimby is insane
To think Ram and Salisbury could have knocked these guys out in the semis. The Aussies really decided 'yeah na we are winning this'
Great match. Hats off to both teams.
Purcell was so clutch with his returns in the last set and a half
The utmost of sport and sportsmanship. Well-played. Class all around. And if you like underdog victories, this outcome should suit you quite well. Looking forward to the rest of the event.
LETS GO!!!!!! So happy for them :)
the most insane win ever idk if there's anything else to describe ebden and purcell. they should've lost earlier but destiny said, "nope not this year"
so sad for pavic for suffering without a right hand for 4 hours but alas
5 set kings 👑👑
This has to be one of the greatest runs to a doubles title purely on the basis of how many comebacks Ebden and Purcell have made. 5 five setters to win the title, saving numerous match points. Incredible.
(I hope they send a christmas gift to Rajeev Ram for missing that easy putaway on MP in SF)
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE 🇦🇺
Oi, oi, oi 🇦🇺 🦘👏🏼👍🏼
Incredible last point and celebration.
that's winning in Epic fashion
OZZY OZZY OZZY
^Players ^are ^ready, ^thank ^you
Lol. I chuckled so hard.
The laying down on the grass celebration, so overdone/fake. Give me rybakina back please
Nothing fake about it! Realizing a dream can make one weak. Rybakina should be herself and so should everyone else.
or maybe it is a real reaction to something you would never be able to experience because you just don't measure close.
That celebration was perfectly synchronized!
Good omen for Nick?
Let’s hope! 🤞🏼🇦🇺
Far out !!! From an Aussie that’s still awake at nearly 6am. Thankyou all for an amazing match. Well done and good night🥂
Until tomorrow 😃
Same here haha. Go the lads.
It’s Sunday and rainy here😂
Why does this commentator always say Baaa-ckhand?
It's Brad Gilbert. He has a ton of -isms and nicknames and all that jazz.
I like him, he’s a happy guy, and he makes me laugh sometimes. 😀👍🏼
Unfortunate for the Croats, as they had easier games almost all set.
Australians winning the doubles, sign of things to come for tomorrow?
Nah, Novak will smash Nick in 4, probably.
The English are true masters of the language. They can say either "Please" OR "Thank you" to quiet or placate an otherwise rowdy crowd and both seem to work equally well.
Mektic/Pavic have choked a lot, not surprising the tiebreak is going the way it is going.
Mullet powers activate
Crowd is so annoying lmao
Purcell carrying hard
There really is nothing like Wimbledon.
I honestly think 10 point tiebreak is better than a normal 7 point tiebreak. 7 points can be over so quickly.
Purcell needs to dump Ebden he’s too old now
So Kate Middleton aka Duchess of Cambridge is wearing high heels on the grass courts and of course making little punctures all over the grass. Should know better as she plays tennis.
She’s a selfish cow
Tiebreaker for the title anyone?
i wanna see rybakina's press conference. it sounds like a lot of journalists were being dicks and ruining her moment. i hate this "got you" political journalism in sports
Literally no one else would have thought this was bad thing from Ons. Both of those are jokes. Ons isn't the most friendly/popular player on tour for nothing.
She seems very sweet! I hate journalists, in general, too!
Very random but I just learned that Mektic has beaten Rublev in singles before.
(Orleans Challenger Q3 2016, Mektic d. Rublev 3-6, 6-2, 7-6)
That second return was just way too high. Come on guys.
1st semi - 03h 59m
2nd semi - 04h 22m
Final - 03h 55m and counting
If not for the whole tourney, Bo5 from the quarters onwards wouldn't be a bad option. These matches have been thrilling.
Please go to a breaker!
I wish there wasn't one 😡😡😡
Mektic and Pavic are killing me here. The relinquishing of momentum is just stunning.
Damn they were lucky to get out of that game. This has been a great match.
Usually I don’t comment on things unless I have something of substance to contribute, but I’ve slowly been turning into a tennis fan for about the past year and watching this tournament has permanently solidified my love for the game. I just love that exhilarating feeling of “finding your thing” and wanting to learn as much about it as possible.
Welcome aboard ! This place is usually very nice once you learn to not pay attention to the few toxic fans.
You should join a tennis club if you can. Playing is about 3 times funner than watching
If you're fit, that is. In my case it's fun for 10 minutes then I get tired and sore 😂
Some choking in this doubles match, insane.
Alright Aussies you can have the doubles title but then Nick has to lose tomorrow
Why are everyobne here rooting for Ebden/Purcell?
Pavic only has one hand for backhand and almost every poin they are going on his backhand and this game is still on and tied
Yeah but a British dude 3 centuries ago discovered and colonized an enormous island and since then the habitants of this island are considered closer to British people than people from the same continent
They are! All descendants from the undesired under the British rule of yore
Yea lol that was funny, but meant everyone from this sub
I think most reddit users are British/Americans/Aussies
I'm rooting for Mektic/Pavic for that exact handicap
I can't believe he didn't go for a deep xcourt lob there
He heard me! lol
I always tell myself every year to watch more doubles because it's always fun whenever I do watch it, but then I never follow through. Until the next time I watch a doubles match where I then have the same thought.
Is it also a 10 point tiebreak for doubles ?
Lol where did all these return winners come from all of a sudden.
You get a return winner, you get a return winner, everyone gets a return winner.
Yes!! That mullet deserves a slam!!
How many times can the Aussies get out of jail?
You know where we originated from🤔
We need a new island for these crooks!
