I've been thinking -- we slowed down the courts many years ago because serves were becoming too dominant and to get a bit more play from the baseline. This meta has resulted in solid, defensively sound baseline tennis as the dominant strategy.
This is fine. However, with talent becoming bigger and bigger, I foresee a time coming where big servers will once again be too hard to beat resulting in a boring sport.
How does this forum feel about getting rid of the second serve and speeding up the courts a little? A single serve heightens the stakes which is good for entertainment and drama. We've all seen enough baseline rallies to last us a lifetime so I would like to make attacking serve and volley tennis viable again. Not dominant, ideally -- but viable.
What say you, r/tennis?
There are big serves, then there are deceptive and well placed serves. TorqueSpin serves will always be in. Higher percentage 1st serves will always be in but even Pros and top 20s suffer and struggle with that.
I feel going flat down the tee (on 1st serve) is not as in lately. I could be wrong.
Cloak type serves are one in a million. (more than that)
Rarely any in the top 20 have that.
Tennis is not dominated by big servers so this not required. You don't have Isner, Otto, Opelka and Cressy winning all the matches here. Besides there's lot of skill involved in returning a big serve as well, just ask Djokovic, Agassi, etc.
I agree. But in the future with the tall talent pool becoming bigger it will be an issue in the future.
We'll see when that future comes. We have always had tall players. None of them came to dominate tennis with serve alone. Goran Ivanišević is the closest example, who was number 2 and won Wimbledon, and that was 20 years ago. No other servebot has ever had that kind of success, so chill...
Alcaraz as #1 seed in Hamburg, probably first time that he is officially the favorite going in to a tournament.
[North Korean TV is showing the Nadal/Djokovic French Open QF now for some reason.](https://i.imgur.com/ihnlsPC.png) They've definitely ripped this off a YouTube video and edited it with fake crowd noise and random Nadal grunts so they can put their own commentary on it.
Why do they have two spaces in "Na Dal"
so. bad news. tim doesnt like what i am doing in this sub. we had dinner today at a very quaint restaurant called bar ceno. he told me straight that he was upsert with my strainge drole, and confusing messages of him as some betrayer of oaths. i apologized profusely, but he asked me to never post of his name again. i asked if i could at least inform this community of my disappearance, he allowed. from now on, i will return only when i have miscelanious insight, but i will never again - out of respect to one of my oldest and closest, most dearest of dear friends - post of this tim van rijthoven again.
Sounds like you let yourself be intimidated by an oathbreaker. Doesn't sound like a friend to me.
Ruud not playing Hamburg makes me a bit disappointed tbh. I mean, I get that he's defending champ in Gstaad and all, but my boy still hasn't won anything above a two-fiddy :/ I thought he would go for the 500 in Hamburg
Ruud needs to hold up for his fans ! Don't disappoint them, he needs to play in these 500-1000s
Bublik is scheduled to play Andrey tomorrow in Hamburg......
Rescheduled to Tuesday. Still a tight planning...
Well he said in his post match interview after beating Murray when the interviewer asked him how come he seemed so focused this week he said that it was because this was his last tournament for a few weeks. Someone I follow on Twitter has been in Newport all week and bumped into him before his match against Kubler yesterday and says she asked him about Hamburg and he said that he 'forgot' he signed up for it and would be withdrawing....Granted, I do not know this woman in real life so she could be making it up but I wouldn't be shocked if he did pull out!
Jesus, Bublik's such a fucking loser for that.
i wouldnt oath that man.
F Bublik for making Cressy feel like shit for winning his first title
Yeah, that's messed up ! Should be classy if he can
I didn't get why he said Cressy was "so lucky" to win and then Cressy apologizing for that. What have I missed?
I get him being annoyed at the crowd but don't take that out on Cressy, I mean there was no crowd worse than the AO Final against Daniil but even he managed to get it together and do a decent speech without being salty.
Bublik was up 1 set and 3-0 in second set but then had a total mental collapse. Ue's, bad dropshots and df's galore.
Nothing to do with luck, then.
Nope it was his own fault. Think in his mind the match was won and he was trying to show off and it backfired. No one but himself to blame for the loss.
Congrats to Cressy and Bublik, Bublik did well to get far at Newport. \*Applauses\*
not my king anymore
Hahahaha I totally forgot about Todd Martin. Looks like he finally shaved that unibrow.
Can we just replay this trophy ceremony on a loop for the rest of the day… lol. All kinds of weird.
Awful from Bublik.
Glad they gave him a doubles trophy lol
Infosys dude about Cressy: "he kind of, uh, joins an exclusive group of champions in the past."
Words of wisdom, indeed.
Also the wrong trophies being presented? honestly wtf Newport.
E: Cressy has no need to apologize to anybody for still winning the match. His grit has gotten him far so he shouldn't have to deal with anymore impostor syndrome after this.
Bublik to Cressy: "You had that great luck. Put your whole prize money on red, please, you're gonna win big."
That's some serious salt. Not classy.
Sorry for the dumb question but can someone explain what that means? (“Put your prize money on red”)?
Gambling on roulette. It has red, black, and either 1 or 2 green boxes that the ball can land in. If you bet on the ball landing in a red box, and it does, you double your money.
Salty af from Bublik. What happened to our “entertaining in a good, wholesome way” king
Seriously that was a bad loss but the attitude stinks...
He's been acting like a brat for most of this year
Is Bublik drinking a beer? lol
Bublik's mental strength (or lack thereof) has never been more tested and this match was basically the epitome of that. Since losing the lead in set 2, the wheels rolled off and he never got them back. Huge shame. Lost all of his serving and returning mojo, as well as awful tactics -- bit too arrogant thinking he could cope with the wind with the sloppy dropshots without actually setting up the point well. He'll rue this day a lot.
This is gonna be an awkward trophy ceremony lmfao.
First title for Cressy!
Pretty big choke. Drop shot himself out of the championship.
A nice ending for the grass season. S&V for the championship.
Why is bublik grumpy af, didn’t even shake the umpire’s hand. Let’s go Cressy!
Guy seems like a POS.
Jeez. Match ends on a DF, and there were 20 of them this match.
This has been a crazy match, but kudos to Cressy for believing - and what a rollercoaster player Bublik is
Nice comeback from Cressy, well done!
Chipotle in shambles rn
Is this first to 10 or 7?
First to 10 is only in majors 5th set
It would make sense that it would also be for the third set in an ATP final, right? They should change that
Maxime Cressy takes the Newport 250 title !
Damn you really paid for a profile picture
I did! Is it shitty :( Shall I revert
No it's cool man! Just wouldn't pay for one myself but your money :) looks nice
Oh thanks lol you were my first comment on it and .. but thanks for the compliment - I thought it was a bit 'dashing' Lol its like digital clothes, right? like a fashion or e-fashion haha, I will save your comment
Bublik: I want to defy the crowd so bad !!!! ARGH !!
Can Bublik defy the crowd? Cressy goes up 3-1 in the deciding tiebreak.
Crowd starts cheering for Max Cressy, they want him to win.
Come on Cressy
Damn! Cressy has a bad fall! Doesn't look too good 😥
Medical timeout for Cressy just on the final mile. Let’s hope it’s fixable, he seemed to fall badly
Bublik gets boos from the crowd. Wiil he overcome this?
Cressy is hurt and calls for the physio.
Is Cressy gonna retire here? I want this dub for him :/
Ouch that fall :/
Let's go Cressy chants coming
Cressy is so fucking clutch
West Coast: Let's go Cressy
I bumped into Cressy this Friday in Newport. He was walking to the stadium to practice. Kind of hard to miss a tall guy with a tennis bag on his back wearing a tennis uniform in the middle of town.
No Cressy fans here?
All the Cressy fans are at the event.
I'm all for Cressy.
Nice, he got it.
Any Cressy fans here?
No upvotes. I guess not !
6-2, 3-0 and 30-40 up and look where we are now. What have you done Bublik
Come on Alex!!!
The crowd is roaring for Bublik !!!!
Will the crowd erupt for Bublik?
HE ROARS !!!!
Bublik looks like he is playing in boxer briefs
Bublik keeps going for a drop shot against Cressy who wants nothing more than playing at the net.
Cressy has no weapons or tools (besides playing at the net)
Good serves and good valleys, that's his weapon.
Cressy: I can't do damage to you on the returns !
Bublik, you must not beat yourself now, this match is on your racquet
Who's giving that robotic background score to this match?! 🤨
imagine some troll tennis fan in a fire truck is sitting outside the stadium using the sirens during cressy’s serve LOL
Bublik not looking like a guy just playing for a paycheck, as he has previously said
Who's for Alexander Bublik?
Bublik screams encouragement in English and swears in Russian so not to be penalized - high IQ play.
Anyone from SoCal or Los Angeles here rooting for Cressy?
I guess not.
i really like motivated bublik
Boston and Los Angeles: Let's go Cressy !
2 break chances missed.
Another break point, Cressy missed his volley !
It's 'can' drinking day (at the tennis event), even the players are drinking from cans. This is new to me ! (I hope it's not beer that the players are sipping, kidding)
the newport tournament has been selling dasani cans to avoid single use plastic
Why did Bublik tank the second? Anyone knows?
So we can see more tennis (ticket holders get more tennis), kidding, no idea actually.
Wish I could see the ball in Newport
FRIEND. do you TINK you need to SEE the ball.
comprehend the magi of the feet
you can come
you can rise
if you shatter the seventh height
if you rely on seeing the ball
you have missed ruud's call
this is a sport of ballerina
this is not the bloodman's war
is it good to see the ball?
is it good to walk through the hall, listening to the devl's call?
no no friend.
we must disparage the ninth passage
we must reject the temptation's call
we must turn to pestulent fodder,
i potificated for nineteen years,
as an apprentice to armegeddan's fear.
i've come with valor, merit, and gold
and i can say
concrete as can be
this is the time
to reject the eye
join the strap
tigthen the chant
knock them out
fight the war
win the battle
CALL THE OATH OF THE SEVENTH EYE
THIS IS THE LAST SET OF TENNIS ON GRASS IN TWENTY-TWENTY TWO
Are you guys rooting for Cressy or Bublik?
Cressy. I would hate for him to lose three finals this year.
Do you guys think Cressy continues or does Bublik have the mental to turn this around?
Cressy's always trying, at least. I never think of him as tanking anything. It all depends on if Bublik can keep making it a tight match or not.
Bublik was making every first serve and returning better than Djokovic, but now he’s cooled off.
DAMN, least what I expected from Bublik, and I´m surprised at myself how I didn´t expect that, hope he can fight in the last one
Cressy served a virtual bagel (6 games in a row)
6 straight games, wow!
Bublik has lost all focus and will
If Nick Kyrgios, Kokkinakis, Bublik, Opelka and Fat Sock were ever on team world for Laver Cup, could we call them Pirates of the Caribean?
I’m genuinely shocked that Cressy is alive in this match
RIP 6-2 3-0
That aged well.
And here comes the swearing
Bublik is calling someone “a fucking clown”
Bublik choking again
Come on Bublik! Don’t let this slip away!!
Damn Cressy has about zero baseline game…
Most Bublik game I've seen entire torunament.
Ayo Bublik wtf
I feel bad for Cressy...like losing a third final in a year is got to be really demoralizing.
feel bad for Krajinovic...
He's gonna win Hamburg next week. Just you wait.
Yeah I mean Krajinovic, Shelby Rogers, Tomljanovic...lots of such senior players are yet to win a title, sadly.
At the same time, his gotten a massive boost in ranking and onto the main tour.
Crazy returns this match from Sashka
Bublik is almost untouchable at Newport this year. If he only played like this for most of the season.
I knew I shouldn’t write that lol
He needs to bagel him, now.
yeah, would be cool Bublik doing a Bublik in the Final
Cressy doing his best Sam Querrey R1 vs Murray impression
This didn't age well :\]
Bublik beard bad
That's how you return against serve+volley =)
Aliassime should take some lessons how to play against Cressy. From Bublik.
Looks like Cressy is the one taking lessons from Felix on how to lose finals
There's a line from *The West Wing* where President Bartlett says the hardest thing to do in sports is to go into the locker room at halftime when you're losing during the Super Bowl and throw out the strategy that got you there.
Cressey needs a new strategy...
Bublik getting great passing shots on Cressy
I think that´s the strategy against a serve and volleyer
Why wasn’t Djokovic banned from the Wimbledon and us open last year for nit being vaxxed?
Because vaccine mandates for entry didn't exist in those countries at that time
Has Shapo been coaching Cressy behind the scenes?
why are they not showing Bublik´s replays? that was such a return!
Cressy plays unnecessarily stupid tennis at the worst times
Bulblik’s pants are a crime against humanity
bublik looks so solid
I know that Cressy's notebook is probably mostly inspirational stuff but I like to imagine he just read the Baby Steps manga and went "Fuck yeah I can do this"
Have a feeling that Cressy will bottle this.
Hope cressy wins
Hope Bublik wins
Bublik vs Cressy
I'm so ready for the clown show LET'S GO
Siniakova serving for the match! Let's not have a repeat of Thursday, okay...
Kasatkina was up 4-1 or something lol
4 2 40 15
So do you guys think Wu Yibing can be a top 25-50 player on the Men's ATP tour?
He has the talent, but I guess he should focus on getting to the TOP 100 first which he can do it.
Kasatkina lost 30 0 service game and followed it up by losing 40 15 servise game. I think she lost to many chances to win this match
Honestly pretty sus.
honestly just Kasatkina stuff, I'm not really surprised
Kasatkina literally has a better chance winning return games than service games
What a point Dasha
Goddamn that point by Kasatkina to break was insane
Imagine if Kasatkina could serve
damn Dasha sent Siniakova from one end of the court to another
omg Adidas why are you doing Dasha so dirty?
Why do fans value Rafa’s 11-13 run more than Novak’s? Both won 5 GS each and both won in more than 1 surface.
Sure, he beat Novak at the USO but it’s still not his preferred GS surface (in fact, Nadal may be better than Novak in the USO surface).
Rather a cracking good match, this, Kasatkina vs Siniakova. Both are streaky and vulnerable against all sorts of opponents, you never know when they'll bring their best. Onto the 3rd set now.
Wow just saw this tweet about Henin's peak. She reached 13 Slam SF from 2003-2007. Only WTA player to reach all slam finals in a calendar year this century.
Her H2H against rivals in slams during that period was: 4-1 against serena, 4-0 against davenport, 5-0 against clijsters, 5-1 against kuznetsova, 2-1 against sharapova
Wu Yibing is the Rome champion!
Defeats Ben Shelton 7-5, 6-3! Well done! Yibing has also won previous Challenger and Future titles in the last few months. He has proven he can beat someone like Jason Kubler, and Kubler got to Semifinals in Newport, Kubler beat FAA, Jordan Thompson, and Duckworth. (Kubler has had trouble with Norrie and Fritz at RG and Wimbledon) So perhaps we shall see Yibing at the 250 level very very soon. Shelton has had trouble with both these guys (probably age and experience), he has been defeated by both Kubler and Yibing recently.
>He has proven to be better than Kubler in a matchups
No? His only win over Kubler was due to Kubler retiring, Kubler won their completed match in the previous tournament.
They are tied for now, 1 and 1. I'm sure they'll meet each other again many times.
lostinmoss, Who are your current favorites to be the best in Challengers in the upcoming months?
Wu was one set up but I don't know when Kubler got injured. Kubler played and won a lot in that period so probably too tired.
I believe he ended up over-hydrating as a means of coping with the hot and humid conditions, so he was both quite clammy by the end of set 2, and extremely inhibited in terms of needing to revisit the restroom frequently (which he had asked the umpire about and when he wasn't allowed to go, he retired and quickly dashed off the court).
