Pegula and Gauff could make the WTA Finals in both Singles and Doubles this year.

dougrayd

Imagine they get drawn into the same RR group in singles lol

ohheckyeah

>Higgins

elmhing

IKR?

At age 17, Martina Hingis was the number one player in the world in both singles and doubles. She won 3 of the 4 singles slams at age 17, only losing the French Open in the finals. Still before turning 18 she went and won all four doubles slams in 1998. The absolute dominance by a 17 year old Hingis...just ridiculous.

Sad_Consideration_49

In 97 at 16 she was 37-0 until she lost the roland garos final! legendary

throwawayblahblas

That was one of the most epic slam finals ever. And I remember Steffi saying when she won “Martina don’t worry you’ll win this one day and have other chances”. And she never did lmaoo I like Hingis but she behaved badly in that match

Sad_Consideration_49

That was 99! 97 she lost to iva majoli. I'm sad she never got a french open title 😢

throwawayblahblas

Ah ok

-Ketjow-

And they say that now WTA is weak talking about Iga's 37 wins. At 16-17 Hingis had the whole tour on a leash. Unthinkable with athleticism and power of today's players (and not just those in top 10).

[deleted]

Lol WTA right now is incredibly weak. Hingis was just otherworldly. Iga is nowhere close to her.

De_Bananalove

There is a little bit of truth to both statements. There is 0 question that the tour in that era was A. nowhere near as deep in terms of talent and B. MUCH LESS, athletic in terms of power and speed that the athletes today posses. There was also no question that Hingis was an incredible talent.

throwawayblahblas

She was one if the best players ever but just didn’t have the power and strength. People say the Williams changed the game but some say it was a Capriati vs Seles final I believe 1991 that ushered in the new power game. EDIT. was a 1991 game not 2000!

cheeseheaddeeds

Better keep her away from cocaine if she wants a future though

tonybotz

For contrast, When Martina was 17 and become no. 1 in 98 she won all four majors in doubles.

buttcrispy

>Martina Higgins

buerglermeister

She's Scottish now!

WadeDMD

I love Martina Higgins

iamdummypants

Steffi Grant was my favorite

tokki32

Didn't she marry Andre Odyssey?

Ok_Antelope_1953

Nice!

IntoThePeople

That’s what they call their minivan.

pregnancy_terrorist

Good for her!

Ballz2You

I didn't even know she was playing doubles. Meanwhile Stosur is also top 10 in doubles and like 20 years older.

Amcnallyjnr

Wasn’t Kournikova technically younger than Gauff is when she was world no1 in doubles? Sure she was 18 as well

ZeroDayDave24

She doesn't play doubles with McNally anymore?

buttcrispy

McNally was holding her back

De_Bananalove

Just another reminder of Martina Hingis and her crazy ass talent

raysofdavies

Hingis and Seles are the two biggest sporting teenage phenoms/prodigies I’ve ever seen. It’s ridiculous what they did. We’ll never see it again. Only insane one-offs like Raducanu coming out of nowhere, but not across a season.

NatFan9

Melichar-Martinez and Perez sharing the tiny little runner up trophy is such a funny visual here.

nmj510

Go COCO!

mihir_x16

Wait, Coco's 18?
