Pliskobot malfunctioning 😔

SausageSandwiches

Excellent Tiafoe finally won a net point.

MoreDblRainbows

What is wrong with Alexandra Stevenson?

MoreDblRainbows

Kvitova all over the place, I figured this would happen. Pegula just too steady and Petra can't hit her off the court.

Arteam90

I still don't know how Med went god mode serving at last year's US Open. His performances since have been so much worse. As a Djokovic hater I guess I gotta say "thanks" to him actually showing up. I think a lot of people saying Med played well but Kyrgios better and... Not sure I see it. Relative to his high level this was a very "meh" Medvedev.

bignut123

He got roddick syndrome after becoming chokedev against nadal in aus open. Ever since then, he hasn’t been the same. His returning wasn’t that great compared to usual against kyrgios

simplecitydress

i think some of this year is physical - just not getting enough match play this year - and psychological. Last year, he traveled with his sports psychologist and their team was so focused on one goal - the USO. I think Med has a lot of doubts coming in this tournament and needed a mental edge he just didn’t have

dannylenwinn

He built a lot of form, momentum, through Toronto and Cincinnatti (in 2021), his serve was threatening and sharp then. He felt great after winning that Canada Masters. Winning Cabos 250 isn't the same and not the same high feeling or even preperation. He didn't come into this US Open with his serve tuned up as such. Also match fitness, he said he started feeling tired and sick by around the 3rd set. And what this redditor said : 'He had a traumatic AO lost to Rafa, then the war started and he's been dealing with a lot of questions regarding his view on it, then the little surgery, Wimbly ban' That is so key, possibly, and then add on Kyrgios being fan favorite at Arthur Ashe looking to make his first breakthrough here at US Open

Whompa

Totally. Last year Med looked so relaxed and was slapping two first serves it looked like for a lot of his service games. This match it didn’t really seem like he had much of a strategy at all. A few good down the line shots but barely anything that felt like he was setting points up.

_Crazy_Asian_

Remember i read some days before, people are being very harsh on Med. He had a traumatic AO lost to Rafa, then the war started and he's been dealing with a lot of questions regarding his view on it, then the little surgery, Wimbly ban ... And all the noise about him not a deserving #1, blah blah, guess it really was a lot to deal with in less than a year

Austin_Aaron_Conlon

Is it possible to view past matches and practice sessions on ESPN+ or elsewhere? Looks like there's only classic finals matches from previous years, unless I'm missing something.

hojbjerfc

You can watch the practices live on the US open app

ExcuseYou-What

There are plenty of past full matches posted on both the US Open and USTA YouTube channels (they're separate). For practice sessions, there isn't too much official footage around; you'll find plenty done by fans who record them though.

Austin_Aaron_Conlon

Seems that even the USTA channel also only posts "classic" matches. Just wondering since the live streams are thorough about covering every court, but it seems they're not really archived and accessible.

Lazy_Left_Eye

More than a mental breakdown I expected Kyrgios to not be upto the mark physically due to him playing both singles and doubles. Fairly impressive of him to up his fitness to this level.

Arteam90

Mmm, give it a minute? Still first week. It'll be more telling from second week how his body holds up.

Lazy_Left_Eye

He usually used to be gassed out by 3rd/4th round without doubles. So relatively speaking he's improved that's what I meant.

KartoosD

How come tennis doesn't use an ELO based method for ranking players?

Neo-grotesque

Don't know the specific reasons, but both methods have their advantages. ELO doesn't take form into account, so beating an up-and-coming player who's peaking and blasted their way to a slam semi wouldn't count for much.

Neo-grotesque

Anyway, for the curious here's an ELO ranking: https://tennisabstract.com/reports/atp\_elo\_ratings.html

blahhhkit

Link doesn’t work for me

Odexios

There was an issue with the backslashes. https://tennisabstract.com/reports/atp_elo_ratings.html

TarcuttaShade

Either Ons or Ajla will be a USO semifinalist! Couldn't be happier.

binsonfiremiss

Two of my faves ☺️

Grunge_bob

When they ask their thoughts about the next match I want to hear some players just start to rip into wrestling promos and say how iga is a jabroni sucka and she better know her role and shut her mouth

jamesjabc13

I would die for one of them to quote Drederick Tatum: “I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children”

Grunge_bob

https://youtu.be/CQLc6Fl6\_Ko

jhk67

Uhhh you know they do have a mother champ…

jamesjabc13

Yes but i imagine she would die of grief

MakeupPenguin

Ons making history- can’t wait to support her against Ajla 🍀🍀

gimmeyotacos

Awww Ons 🥺

lonelygalexy

Omg Ons is so sweet. This is the first on court interview of hers that i have watched

Grunge_bob

Oh man did someone please record that part where she talks about her grandma

shegotofftheplane

Upset of the day: Kyrgios d. Medvedev / Tomljanovic d. Samsonova (and ends her 13 match winning streak) Comeback of the day: Tomljanovic set 1 with that clutch super long 4-5 game, including saving 8 set points Match of the day: Medvedev-Kyrgios Point of the day: the Kyrgios one TB of the day: Medvedev-Kyrgios

jamesjabc13

Samsonova was unplayable prior to this round. I can’t believe two massive upsets happened almost simultaneously.

aweap

Same with Kudermetova at least this week though she hadn't had that huge competition.

CHEFjay11

I’m not excited about Rafa/Nick final - that was insane by Kyrgios -no thank you!!!!!

jamesjabc13

It’s win-win though! Team 23 or team chaos. Everybody wins haha

ohheckyeah

Kyrgios currently favorite to win USO by oddsmakers 👀

Cardplay3r

Lmao really? That's gotta be a first for any slam

Grunge_bob

Lmao she corrected her saying ons is the first aftrican since 1998 to make the qf cause of Kevin Anderson

aweap

The female Murray ☺️

ExcuseYou-What

Ons is a perfect ambassador for the sport. You will never not see the passion she has. I love her so much.

hojbjerfc

Well I would say goodnight but it has been an awful no good very bad night that I hope to forget in the morning. Idk how much i will be following USO after this outside Matteo, Marin, and the womens draw, so i may be less active agter tonigjt. Just wanna say I appreciate most of you, a lot of you are really fun to talk with about this sport we all love. I know i am annoying asshole ans honestly most people woukd want me gone but ya I appreciate y’all

FogoCanard

what happened???

overtired27

They’re a Med fan

ALittleReyOfSunshine

I fucking love Ons so much!

No_Community4641

Ons vs Ajla - difficult to pick sides, Both of them come across as sweet and kind people.

Earnmuse_is_amanrag

Ons is so versatile. Slice, drop shots don't work well with light balls, you lose the feel. She's adapted well, and is playing solid baseline tennis. Great result.

nupristeen

YES ONS!!

omarFN

Im so happy for Ons she deserves to win it all

Grunge_bob

Always feels SO good when you beat a player that used to beat you

mastershake714

Hell yes!!! Go Ons!

turophiles

Ons “If I can’t serve for the match, guess I’ll break for it” Jabeur!!!!!!

shegotofftheplane

Yay Ons! First win over Kudermetova and through to the QFs

mastershake714

Ons really hitting it deep

orangedgoat

Nice

hojbjerfc

Last Kyrgios vs Katen match was when ATP went down a very bad path. Kyrgios spit at an umpire. That should be a long ban and he got a suspended sentence. That suspended sentence led to the light punishment for Zverev, and Kyrgios’s actions in IW being ignored But ya know who won that day. Karen. Do it again king

aweap

That wasn't the last time they met. The last time they met was in Australian Open 2020 where Khachanov went down in the decider tiebreaker.

FlyReasonable6560

Sorry mate Kygs beat karen in AO 2020 5 set thriller

hojbjerfc

Shush

mastershake714

Sorry, another newbie question prompted by Kudermetova tossing her racket a few minutes ago: Are there any pro players (besides Nadal) who *haven’t* done that during a match? Athletes are obviously regular people who can let their tempers get the better of them just like everyone else, but as a newcomer to the sport, I sort of have this existential dread of one day seeing a player I really admire do that…

aweap

What a weird fear to have. Coaches, sports psychologists even former players like Roddick, everyone suggests that it's okay if you do it in a safe way like flat on the ground instead of plonking it at an angle which could hurt someone else. It's a massive stress elevator in pressure-like situations. Obviously some people take it too far but to judge people who rarely do it is such a nit-picky attitude, I don't understand how someone can live with this sort of a 'Fear' and call themselves a sports fan.

Grunge_bob

They exist

Jkpoker13

Very surprised that medvedev lost to krygios. Idk maybe krygios is ready to win a slam honestly. Hard to see bc he’s a nut job and can easily lose a match after a tantrum but who knows/- this might be his time. Honestly, I hope we get a nadal Vs krygios final. Would be great matchup. Clearly, I wanna see nadal win and I feel the door opened for him with medvedev out.

FogoCanard

He said it after the match that he's been practicing as much as possible. In previous years, he would openly say he was never trying to be one of the top players because it takes too much time. He didn't want to practice that much and live the right way. It seems like he's changed his attitude at least since the beginning of the summer. We might be seeing his real potential now.

Jkpoker13

Yea no question. When he’s playing well, he has all the shots it seems. I just think mentally he will crumble against the top men. I think nadal v krygios final would be spicy and great drama. I feel there is bad blood between the two which would make it a fun watch.

dannylenwinn

Ons J Onsy Jabby is looking to take this one here. 5-2 now, in 2nd set

Grunge_bob

Did PCB get injured today

hojbjerfc

He looked ill. Idk if he was hurt but he looked like he was struggling with the heay. Tough maychup for that to happen with.

Sea-Temperature9825

From what I could tell he wasn't feeling well at the end of the third set, took some tablets and went god mode in the 4th. Think he's okay overall.

ExcuseYou-What

Most likely heat exhaustion and it cost him the entire third set, for sure.

Grunge_bob

He hit a volley and then seemed to give up on the point then talked to the umpire, probably to call the trainer?

ExcuseYou-What

Yeah he tanked the latter stages of that set and he looked extremely pale and clammy. Very uneasy. He had a short conversation with the medical staff and then they gave him some tablets and then he played himself back into alertness.

shegotofftheplane

From his press, Medvedev almost seems a bit relieved to lose and in the process lose the #1 ranking. Said he hasn’t been playing well enough to be #1

Psychological_Bug676

I think it’s good for him. He’s at his best when he’s the underdog. He was the least hyped, least appreciated player of his generation and look where he is now

Sea-Temperature9825

That's honestly a really good perspective for him to have. Between this and the Paris/ATP finals runner up points he was likely bound to lose it soon, at least now he can move on and just focus on getting his best level back.

ExcuseYou-What

that's the part I'm so sad for him about. you can tell he's been internalizing all of the hate, the doubt, the naysayers, and everything else as much as he tries to deflect it. hope he has a good off-season and really fleshes out everything that didn't work so well this year

Earnmuse_is_amanrag

Here we go again. Are you a bot or not!? I am so so confused

dannylenwinn

Could be both, operators can change sometimes. Sometimes need a break for some human-like insights. Can cause room for error however, don't expect perfection. For now think like you will, it is assumed a human. Trying to stay within the rules of the sub ! That is utmost important. Be grateful you have a response too, since I'm kind of in a slightly better mood.

shegotofftheplane

So you’re not a bot then 👀

hojbjerfc

Definitely earned it at the start of the year

vonosmas

Damn, I really hoped for a third Kudermetova - Tomljanovich clash in one month :(

Grunge_bob

The usopen twitter account blocked me. Anyone else get blocked? I don't even think I've tweeted them

hojbjerfc

I am a Nika fan but still happy for ons shebis so grwat for the sport we are so lucky to have her That being said i thino Carlo Garcia will win the title

shegotofftheplane

Bro put down the alcohol

hojbjerfc

Never :) Joking aside the alcohol is down, just making it’s wat through

cyber-slut666

Jabeur’s serve has gotten so beefy this year. Don’t recall her ever serving this many aces in recent matches.

MakeupPenguin

yes Ons!!! Get it girl

Luck1492

Ons is super consistent I feel like which is really good for the WTA. Iga, Ons, Coco, Leylah, and a few others I could totally see being on top of the WTA for a while Edit: I forgot about Pegula and Collins who have also both been quite good this year

LaunchGap

i feel like nobody's talking about Ons in this slam(including me).

dasheeshblahzen

i feel like nobody's talking about Azarenka.

Luck1492

Holy fuck I thought she lost lol

dasheeshblahzen

lmao exactly. the match tomorrow should be on pliskova's racket but who knows with her?

Iiiifoundsweetroad

Literally who

Equidae2

the commentators can't stop talking about her

hojbjerfc

Oh i forgot to pust it this morning but i wanted to make it a daily thing so uhh trivia question of the day whats the best type of alcohol to deal with loss in tennis :) Edit: no one got it. Best answer is Tequila but Vodka is a close close second!

lostinmoss

None of them since drinking will most likely heighten your experience of the sorrow. Try LSD instead.

Grunge_bob

Agree

hojbjerfc

Hahha sorry you are incorrect but I will listen for next time

heart-out

absolutely no love for lyuda or nika from the crowd tonight

amead5

Kudermetova seems to have picked up her game while Ons took hers to outer space

Big_booty_ho

Ons’ husband definitely has stomach ulcers from watching her matches. He’s never completely in his seat out of anxiety

MakeupPenguin

The defense from Ons in that last point!!

GarySteinfieldd

Holy shit

NuuuDaBeast

kyrgios is the favourite for the US open on betting sites rn what is this timeline haha

blackb0xes

WOW ONS

legohotwing

Ons’ precision when she’s on is insane

Iiiifoundsweetroad

Is there any way Ons, Iga, and Coco all win the USO 😭

Cantonloupe

>Is there any way Ons, Iga, and Coco all win the USO 😭 And Caro 🥺

Iiiifoundsweetroad

Omg how could I forget 😭😭😭

DrKersh

yeah, if a meteor fall on the us open tomorrow while they are training,t hey would probably award all of them as winners in their funerals.

Iiiifoundsweetroad

I didn't think to put a meteor in my bracket

befenpo

Can't wait for my 2023 honey duece cup with "2022 winner - Meteor" on it

hojbjerfc

Listen I get people like her, but Eva’s umpiring tonight was weak and pathetic. I think she should be stripped of top level assignments for a while after that

Grunge_bob

Once he threw the stick and broke the butt cap off he should have gotten a warning, then the second one had an audible crack at which point, that's over

hojbjerfc

Ya I mean Nick was fantastic tonight and like ya he may have won anyway but losing the first set when he should have won via point penalty was tough

duckbigtrain

All the umpires have clearly been instructed to give Kyrgios a ton of leeway

shegotofftheplane

I agree her umpiring wasn’t great but let’s not demand for her to get stripped of high assignments when we let the loads of male umpires that don’t do shit to Kyrgios continue with their jobs

hojbjerfc

And fwiw, man I wish I didn’t have to make this criticism of a female umpire, so many get this criticism of being weak and it is unfair. But tonight it was weak, and poor and shameful, so ya. Lots of male umpires need calling out but rn the female ukpire didn’t cover herself in pride

hojbjerfc

For me it is time for accountability. If you refuse to stand up and not get bullied, you can’t get his matches and you can’t get the top level matches. It was really bad tonight

Informal_Profile7431

What are you talking about?

hojbjerfc

Nick should have had a point penalty at set point in the 1st, got nothing. His team even with these current coaching rules was illegally coaching, got nothing. It was really unprofessional and poor

Informal_Profile7431

Tbf the coaching rules have been recently put into place. I don’t think it’s fair for the umpire to be fully aware of that.

ExcuseYou-What

Perfect Abba song after this tiebreak for Ons. What a level that was.

No_Community4641

I didn't know that Leylah and Sock are playing as a mixed doubles team in New York and now they are into the QFs. Would love to watch them win the tournament

MakeupPenguin

Let’s go Ons!!!

estreetpanda

I hope you're watching Anett, Paula and Maria. *This*. *This is how to be a top five seed seed at a major*

jleonardbc

No man except Federer has defended a US Open title since Pat Rafter in 1998. Federer did it four consecutive times.

dannylenwinn

Federer GOAT 🐐

Flimsy-Piglet-5263

Since the competition got bigger after a statement performance from Delpo. It was impossible for him as well to defend his titles. Djoker stopping him twice to reach the finals 2010 and 2011 when he was still in his prime.

stocksnhoops

Goat doing 🐐 things .

blackb0xes

good lord

omarFN

LETS GO ONS

Collecting_Cans

It’s been fun watching PCB this summer. Question for the armchair tennis historians/nerds. Where do you think his career body of work currently ranks among the Spanish players RBA, Verdasco, Feli, Robredo? (Tried to limit the list to players who were more or less his contemporaries and somewhat comparable in achievements.)

dannylenwinn

Below Ferrer and Verdasco, then above the rest. Still enjoying his play regardless

hojbjerfc

Above Feli RBA and robredo but below Verdasco

Grunge_bob

Not legendary by any means but, kind of like a Nicholas Almagro level, top three, Davis Cup starter

shegotofftheplane

Ons wins her first set ever against Kudermetova!

KCD_OG-78

This tiebreak is ownage by Jabeur!

SandDCurves

Damn, this tie break by Jabeur has been one of the most “I’m gonna crush you” parts of the open so far

Grunge_bob

Ons must have really just stepped up her level completely cause I thought she was toast this set

Kahn-wald

Ons. What. The. Fuck. Clay season Ons is back.

cyber-slut666

Ons playing this tiebreaker extremely well! Veronika has clearly tensed up a bit. Ons’ experience at the later stages of the big events really helping her out here.

overtired27

The Amazon commentators and the umpire are pronouncing “Jabeur” three different ways. Which actually is it?

Iiiifoundsweetroad

I thought it was juh-burr

DrKersh

https://www.wtatennis.com/players/316847/ons-jabeur on the right of her name, there is an icon of an speaker, she pronounces her name, every wta player have it on the wta page

overtired27

That’s way more helpful than I was expecting, thanks!

Equidae2

oh gawd jabeur's box

GarySteinfieldd

Hearing Issam speaking my mothers tongue is so satisfying

Flimsy-Piglet-5263

If Nick would have played Rafa in fourth round. As a Rafa fan i am very happy Nadal got a good draw. He has to defeat Alcaraz in the semifinals. I am scared for Rafa from now on.

Gaarando

Samsonova maybe with the worst Tennis of all time? 56 UE in 2 sets. Ajla won 87 points in total. Set 1 was close because Ajla herself hit a lot of errors also, but Samsonova was leading in set 1. Set 2 Alja just let Samsonova beat herself and won an easy 6-1 set. Aja won 29 points in set 2 and 22 of those were Samsonova errors.

cyber-slut666

Tiebreak time. Let’s see if Ons can finally win a set against her nemesis Kudermetova!

DrKersh

holy crap jabeur, she didn't have the right to win that point

simon2105

Netflix is the biggest winner this year

hojbjerfc

I am drinking to forget the ~~2019 US Open Final~~ ~~2020 US open Semi Final~~ ~~2021 AO final~~ ~~2021 Wimbledon r16~~ ~~2022 AO final~~ ~~2022 RG R16~~ 2022 USO R16

drntl

I get why people are saying Nick played amazing. But Medvedev just didn’t bring much that match. Movement seemed off, couldn’t make many passes, and his strategy of just keeping the ball in play got destroyed.

Flimsy-Piglet-5263

That's his game. If his first serves aren't there. His entire game falls apart. Now that even Stefanos beat him, his confidence is low. Maybe he will perform better after the pressure of being world number 1 falls off.

Grunge_bob

Passing was horrible for his ability. Serve was nowhere on par

throwaway739299292

Looking at my credit card transactions and lmao I spent ~530 maple dollars on food and drinks in 3 days at the USO. Guess who’s living on ramen for the rest of the month

Grunge_bob

Did you buy a holiday ticket package

throwaway739299292

Nope just individual sessions during the Amex presale

jasonkochel

Honey Deuce is a hell of a drug. I hope you're at least getting your $20 AmEx statement credit.

throwaway739299292

I am! It showed up last year as well

Iiiifoundsweetroad

Shoulda snuck ramen into the tournament

throwaway739299292

Actually you’re allowed to bring in food but if you’re spending 12-14 hours there like me you’ll end up buying stuff

Iiiifoundsweetroad

Yeah, same happened to me at Cincy. My body was running on palomas and chili

Zealousideal_Speed47

All I want is Ruud in the Final, is it too much to ask?

Mcjirnirs

Alright, it's time for me to go to bed, my emotions were running again and I need to recharge

Kahn-wald

If Collins keeps playing like she played yesterday it's over for the other gals

hojbjerfc

Tennis is the worst sport and I hate it but come on Nika queen kick some ass and bring it home

nupristeen

broken!

DrKersh

kudermetova is extremely anxious about this match, she has been making simple points complicated and celebrating a lot what should be normal points, she is just super tense, and jabeur is gonna capitalize on that and keep it I think

Equidae2

I don't see her celebrating at all

DrKersh

she has been grunting COME ONS with a lot of normal points, if you look at her, every point that is a rally, even if she is on a dominating position to win it, it makes her super uncomfortable, she just don't want to play points of more than 3 or 4 hits and grunts a lot when she win those.

Equidae2

what do you think Jabeur has been doing

DrKersh

playing much more relaxed and her tennis. jabeur celebrates and so, but kudermetova is just tense, like she couldn't put her real tennis on court because nerves.

Equidae2

She's a very nervous tense player loaded with talent. It's a shame

Distinct_Salt_2460

Ons down 3-5\* because that's a thing she does in first sets now apparently.

Tracy140

Nick in presser live feed

overtired27

Where?

overtired27

Is there anywhere other than the US Open YouTube channel to see the press conferences?

shihtzu_knot

You can watch them on the USO app.

shyaminator96

Please Ons don't do this

DrKersh

and here it comes the first break of serve for kudermetova

Darius0995

This commentator sure is obsessed with the phrase “jerk around the court…”

estreetpanda

Nines technical team may be rubbish but Jelena Dokic is their saving grace
