I've seen a lot of people claim that Iga is gonna lose her world #1 status next year because it's gonna be hard for her defend all those points she got on her win streak And this annoys me because people really don't seem to appreciate just how far Iga is ahead of everyone else. Iga is literally 2nd (behind Garcia) in points since the start of the grass season, she could literally defend 0 of her win streak titles and still have a good chance at being #1 afterwards

[deleted]

The great Casper Ruud who deserves to be number 1 according to this sub, has a brilliant record of 2-12 against Nadal, Djokovic, Mededev, Alcaraz, Tsitsipas and Zverev. Has 9 titles on tour, most prestigious one being a 250, in his RG run to the final the toughest opponent he faced was Cilic on clay and in his USO run a resurgent Khachanov. Can't believe people are upset about the possibility of him becoming the World Number 1.

WhenInDoubt-jump

Berrettini was a tougher opponent than Khachanov, at least on paper.

Psychological_Bug676

When Casper wins (which I know he will 😌) everyone here should just say JAAAAAA. No other comments only JAAAAAA

seewhyaxe

As a Rafan, I don’t know whom to root for this final. One is a fellow Spaniard, the other is from the Academy. Who’s Rafa supporting lol

aweap

I think he'll support the Spaniard no matter where he comes from.

seewhyaxe

Possible. I’m not a Spaniard and I quite like Ruud, I guess Jaaaaaa

thcm123

Any Germans here that can translate what Angie said in this interview? https://twitter.com/Eurosport_DE/status/1568715011929034752

AverageBeef

She says she is not stopping yet, and she is coming back. She will be happy to see everyone again and it was good news and a good greeting.

Koeienvanger

I'm not German, but I think she said she's not quitting yet and she'll definitely return.

Flimsy-Piglet-5263

Honestly it irks me that 70% of Tennis community have no idea about Iga Swiatek. Half of the tennis media Twitter didn't even post about her winning us open. If only she still belonged to Nike, maybe she could have gotten some coverage. Other half of the people only know her because she is a Rafa fan.

Avalanche_1996

Do people not read the posts? Do they not post about winners?!

shegotofftheplane

Probably helped her. She could focus on tennis without all the media pressure. I don’t think she’ll be a household name but she def has the endorsements and will have more coming her way, good for her

terrebattue1

I agree. It is like how Jabeur was being celebrated more for being a Wimbledon finalist than Rybakina, the actual champ! All of the Internet want Jabeur to win so badly because she has all the fancy sponsorships and also because she is from North Africa so non-tennis fans like her story a lot. Unless she wins a Grand Slam she is in the same tier as Robin Soderling. Btw, Emma Raducanu is not a Rafan. NIKE sponsors both players so they keep taking photos and videos of them together for promo and PR reasons. Emma is more excited about Roger/Nole/Carlos than she is about Rafa. She is so fake like when she wore the Rafa NIKE shirt and LARPed like she actually follows him.

Flimsy-Piglet-5263

Actually it doesn't matter who Emma is a fan of. The truth is she is more inspired by Li Na since her childhood. I don't even buy her being a Rafa fan. She is just wearing his line because they both are sponsored by Nike. What i am saying is when an athlete from Nike wins, they get promoted in their social media which has the highest reach in engagement in sports. This is a fact. She would have been featured in Nike's billboards with her own slogans. Also their outfits would have made her looked like a girl and more attractive than the outfits asics is designing her which are more like grandmother outfits. Nike would have build her image.

terrebattue1

All I'm saying is she is so fake. Li Na is awesome, btw. She is one of my favorites.

Trepur349

I hate the lack of publicity Iga has gotten throughout the year, she's been so dominant but the media hasn't treated her that way

AverageBeef

Is Halep the wooden spoon?

Cloudy0-

She is.

AverageBeef

Wild. I did not see that coming

bignut123

I’m curious why do we all call alcaraz alcaraz instead of garfia, which is technically his real last name? That’s just what I’ve seen the most, but I struggled explaining it to a friend who’s a casual. Is there any particular reason behind it?

Trepur349

Because Alcaraz is his surname. Spanish name structures are different from English name structures

bignut123

Thank u boss

ExcuseYou-What

I'm also not a local source, but this is my understanding (and I don't think the surnames have to be hyphenated/double-barreled). Spanish naming customs doesn't necessarily dictate that "Garfia" is his "real" last name because both surnames are a legitimate part of the 'surname component.' The first surname is also mostly the paternal one and that's been the overwhelming standard, but it also doesn't preclude someone from going more by their maternal surname (like Picasso). Anyways, I think it's basically the same reason we don't call Nadal "Parera" or Muguruza "Blanco". It doesn't mean their other last name doesn't exist; they've just chosen not to use both names on tour for convenience's sake, even if some of the other Spanish players do.

bignut123

Makes sense thanks

AverageBeef

I believe it’s the Spanish naming convention putting the father’s last name first, with the mother’s hyphenated. He will then pass on the first last name, Alcaraz. It’s the same as Nadal being Nadal-Pereira, and I believe PCB being Carreño-Busta, I imagine that they just have some say in how they are styled ie. Stanislas Wawrinka -> Stan Wawrinka, Alison Riske -> Alison Riske-Amitraj. I could be totally wrong though.

bignut123

Very helpful thank u man

Lazy_Left_Eye

A couple of more years from Swiatek like this and she'll be in ATG conversation. But women's game is pretty competitive with so many slam winners and talented players. Who knows who breaks out or who makes a comeback after a couple of lull years. But Swiatek's ceiling is definitely a top 15 player of all time at least. Interested to see how her career pans out,.

bignut123

She’s consistent at least which is nice since it’s lacking so much in women’s game besides Serena

[deleted]

[удалено]

bignut123

Agreed. Don’t get me wrong, women’s tennis is easily one of the best women’s sports. They’re actually good and watchable, unlike the wnba and soccer teams. I personally just don’t follow it that much tho because I find men’s more interesting. Unfortunately, your comment will get down voted due to the Reddit hive mind assuming you’re sexist and all that bullshit

aweap

It's not hive mind or whatever, lol! It's just because people don't agree with their opinion. Just coz one or two oddball users like you despise WTA enough to not wanna watch any matches, doesn't mean that's this sub's overwhelming opinion or that a separation of subreddits is required (I mean what problem is that even gonna resolve). That's just how you both and a couple of more people think, that's it.

Koeienvanger

Women's football is pretty awesome. The lack of schwalbes really makes it enjoyable.

sriv_ak_04

Congrats to Iga Swiatek on Winning her 1st US Open Title now only 2 more Slams are left for her to Win in order to complete the Career Grand Slam

shomii

I'm so happy that US Open got this shit final since they excluded Djokovic. Haven't watched a single match.

shegotofftheplane

If you’re talking about Swiatek vs Jabeur, how would Djokovic have made a difference anyway? If you’re talking about Ruud vs Alcaraz, that makes no sense since the final hasn’t even happened, let’s not judge it yet

Cantonloupe

>I'm so happy that US Open got this shit final since they excluded Djokovic. Haven't watched a single match. Did you expect the tournament organizers to smuggle him across the border in the dead of night?

Unaatennista

Was hoping he would take a boat from the Bahamas to Miami 🤷‍♀️

hojbjerfc

Well. Since My uso is likely over I just wanna reminisce. I have been so lucky over the past 3 USO’s. Getting into 3 grand slam finals for a combined $50. Meeting my favorite players: Iga and Daniil. Seeing them both win the damn thing. Seeing imo one of the best matches ever in Rafa-Meddy 2019. I have been so fucking lucky. I will never not appreciate USO for what it is worth and it is a highlight when it comes around every year Edit: Also my favorite athlete in the world fucking phorobombed me. Who else can say that? Thats fucking awesome

Nastypav12

Don't forget you got to see your gf play (lol); is it Lucie or Diana?

hojbjerfc

LMAO stop. They were both great and both played great tennis this week to win their title

jyeatbvg

How’d you get tickets for so cheap?

hojbjerfc

Grounds passes, and then when some people leave, i ask for their ticket

Koeienvanger

Prostitution. Edit: I suppose y'all have found a better way than I did.

Slambodog

Actual conversation with my mom (paraphrased). Me: "So, only three other active players have three or more majors. You should be able to name at least two of them." Her: "Uh, Serena and Venus?" Me: "Venus counts, Serena doesn't. You know the other one. We saw her play Iga in Miami." Her: "I'm too tired, give me her initials." Me: "No." Her: "Then I can't figure it out. I need her initials." Me: "I just told you." Her: "I didn't hear you. Tell me again." Me: "No." Her: "I give up. Oh, wait, you mean her initials are NO? Osaka!"

bignut123

I’ll be honest I don’t follow women’s tennis nearly as much as men’s, so I struggled on that massively. I probably would’ve said Margaret court lol

Slambodog

She retired like 40 years ago, though

bignut123

Yeah but I had no clue Osaka had more than 3 slams. All I remember is when she beat Serena in us open one time and crowd booed her in the ceremony causing her to cry abt mental health and slide through the rankings. I obviously knew who Osaka is, but not that she had 4 slams

Psychological_Bug676

Carlos has to be extra motivated now right? Chance for a photo with Iga. Love this for him 😭😭😭

Avalanche_1996

Does Carlos has a crush on Iga?

Slambodog

Iga going to see a Broadway play tomorrow, not going to be at his match

Psychological_Bug676

No, on Mondays they usually do these talk shows and stuff

Slambodog

Oh, she's still skipping his match though

IntroductionPrize197

Ons jabeur kicking tennis balls lowkey annoyed me

clykins46

Why?

IntroductionPrize197

Just seems disrespectful to the ball kids

clykins46

They don’t give a fuck. They are ball kids. Imagine going home to your parents saying dammit she kicked a ball i am fucking mad.

WilderWildeWelles

Was a ballkid, can confirm that I wouldn’t really care. Would be a bit annoying though

dannylenwinn

She does do that all the time

Kahn-wald

Random prediction for 2023 Slams (WTA) Australian Open: Iga Swiatek French Open: Iga Swiatek Wimbledon: Liudmila Samsonova (Haddad Maia, if she backs up her grass 2022 performance, she might be TOP 10 best grass players in the current tour) US Open: Amanda Anisimova (all USA final with Gauff)

Slambodog

I'm go with Tomjlanovic, Garcia, Raducanu, Pegula, because why not

AverageBeef

Heh. That’d be a pretty funny season.

incrediblemonk

I'll go with: Aussie Open - Osaka French Open - Swiatek Wimbledon - Ons Jabeur US Open - Caroline Garcia

FlyReasonable6560

Bruh this is so irrelevant but I hope Carlos got a nice fade cleanup before the match tomorrow - would look fresh with a US Open trophy 😈😈

blurryturtle

I can just pick Juan Carlos Ferrero insisting "haircuts aren't important, i will cut your hair so you are maximum aerodynamic" before giving him a #3 Djokovic.

WhenInDoubt-jump

The Alcaraz break point meme is well known by now (rightly so, it's been atrocious since the ARV match at RG), and it does feel like he struggled with it at times during this US Open too, but if we look at his conversion rates so far: 38% against Baez, 70% Coria, 64% Brooksby, 33% Cilic, 40% Sinner, 45% Tiafoe. The best converters (Nadal, Djokovic) average 44% over their career, while Federer sits at 41% and Ruud 40%. In this tournament, Ruud's current conversion rate is 42,5, while if we average the numbers listed above, we get 48% for Alcaraz. Obviously the round 2 and 3 matches really help that stat, but besides the Cilic match (not great, but he's had much worse) those numbers are all reasonably normal or good. So, is this the tournament where he shakes off the curse? (Watch him miss everything against Ruud now)

WilderWildeWelles

I feel like the meme comes from the fact that the missed breaks come at the worst possible times. Just like Roger. Statistically he’s not far off from Novak and Rafa, but he misses crucial opportunities.

WhenInDoubt-jump

Nah, in the vast majority of his matches since RG his total BP conversion has been truly awful, not just a few "big moments".

hojbjerfc

Iga: I hate these balls so much that I will absolutely crush them for two weeks out of pure hatred and win the title

South-Tangerine-1876

YOUR HATE HAS MADE YOU POWERFUL

vonnegutfan2

Let the hate flow…

hojbjerfc

Anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering and suffering leads to……grand slam titles

throwaway739299292

Played tennis after almost two weeks today. Getting closer to the level where I can take a set off nadal.

AncientLyte

Lol, so ur a 4.0?

throwaway739299292

mind yo biz

AncientLyte

Dull is 3 in live rankings now must be hard for u 😢

throwaway739299292

bignut123

Fraudal couldn’t take out my boy tiafoe. BBC energy too much

AncientLyte

Nadal fans on here have been on their high horse all year. The meltdown from them after losing just one match this year though he has the slam record was something. Even if he doesn’t have an excuse for the loss, they try to invent one

bignut123

Facts bro. I always say baldal fans have two possibilities for him every match. He either wins or he’s injured. He can never lose legitimately. He deserved the French, but I really wish Medvedev didn’t choke and won Australia in straights. Would’ve been insane for his legacy to beat both the top 2 players of all time in slam finals in straight sets. Now all he’s thought of is chokedev and I’m worried he has roddickitis now

AncientLyte

Roddick got blocked by the best versions of Fed typically though and was still at the top 10 till like 29/30. Still feel bad for him for that Wimbledon 09 loss.. I’m a djokovic fan, and the number 1 of Nadal fans that use the Nadal beat medvedev at ao who beat Djokovic uso so he would have beaten djokovic at ao logics triggers me.. yeah I wish medvedev won that ao :(, he just had such a different aura around him on HC before that. I hope he returns back to top form. The med from last year wouldn’t have lost to nick. Also, ur so right. It’s either Nadal is the goat for beating while he’s injured, or you’re lucky that you beat an injured Nadal. Always injured apparently

bignut123

Yeah my point was roddick sucked ass after that 09 wimby loss and could never do anything of value after that. Hoping that doesn’t happen to Medvedev. I’m a Federer fan, but I accept that he’s #3 all time. I just wish nadal peaked later like djokovic and wasn’t so dominant on clay because otherwise Federer prolly would have had 25-30 slams. So now I just support djokovic out of spite to hopefully stop baldal from being the goat

AncientLyte

Baldal 🤣💀 that made me chuckle

bignut123

Lol 😂. Don’t know how u didn’t notice it in my first couple comments haha. I respect the guy obv but it’s fun to meme on him

AncientLyte

Yeah same I respect the guy as well but getting into banter and triggering others is fun at times

Annjul666

*Iga in 2040 coming up on stage to receive yet another trophy, rows of stars on her jacket* : dis for me?!

hojbjerfc

AYYY JUST NOTICED LUCIE AND DIANA WON DUBS!!! DAVAI QUEENS

Slambodog

Yeah, I was furtively checking the score during changeovers of the Iga match. Happy for Lucie. She might be the next Siniakova. Or even better

curlyhairedyani

Barty at 25: 3 Slams, 3 masters titles, 1 tour finals Swiatek at 21: 3 Slams, 5 masters titles. Scary to think what she would have achieved by age 25. Make of that what you will.

Koeienvanger

Anything can happen. Hingis had 3 Slams at 16.

curlyhairedyani

Yeah but even if she retired tomorrow her major achievements stack up against the player most people think dominated tennis recently

Nabucodonosor89

Definitely the most difficult final that Iga played since winning her 1st title but she still didn't lose a set. 10 finals played and 10 titles won, 20 straight sets won in finals. Hercog, the GOAT is still the only player to beat Swiatek in a final, when Iga was still a junior, on her 1st year playing WTA events.

Darius0995

Iga owes everything to Barty’s early retirement.

throwaway739299292

Probably your worst opinion yet and that’s saying something

Striking_Town_445

Who knows. Iga might have a Federer like domination into her early 20s and then a young girl emerges from the shadows, rips up the rulebook and consistently raises the roof on pushing Iga's limits. I can imagine this happening. She will probably be a product of Rafa's academy ;)

Nabucodonosor89

and Barty will be forever thanking Collins for taking out Iga before that AO final, seeing how Iga play finals...

Mcjirnirs

Oversimplistic take

Koeienvanger

And Steffi Graf owes her success to Monica Seles' stabbing. It's a bit of a rabbit hole to go down if you start thinking like that.

Trepur349

Doha and this USO may have gone differently, but I think Iga would have been the favourite at all the other tournaments she won

curlyhairedyani

Why? She’s clearly the better player..

Darius0995

I’ve seen you say this multiple times now. Not sure why you think this to be the case. Barty has so much more variation; she’d make Iga an UE machine.

curlyhairedyani

“Many times” you mean twice.. And hardly. If Barty was that *good* she would have won a lot more than she did, 2 years of peak tennis has done wonders for her rep because she used to be inconsistent as hell. Maybe they wouldn’t match up well against each other but I’m trusting Iga over Barty vs the rest of the tour all day

Dark_Vengence

Iga was unstoppable, she always found a way to win. She is going from strength to strength. She will get to 10 grand slams in no time if she stays at this intensity barring injuries.

hojbjerfc

https://twitter.com/tennishallofame/status/1568738378241437696?s=46&t=f7skAXseh8PTX7qlf-Gb5A a hall of famer at 21 years old…wow Edit: oh those motherfuckers meant she is automatically on the ballot

Striking_Town_445

She becomes eligible based on achievement. Birth of a 🐐 here...just glad she is here channeling Big 3 energy. US open daily subs be like : Carlitos and Iga a mix of Fed, Rafa, Novak, skills, attitude, movement, hair, splits, sliding on hardcourt like its clay, quads for thr ages etc Happy both are young and hopefully around for a v long time

Unaatennista

Just realized Barty and Swiatek have the same number of slams

curlyhairedyani

Crazy because Iga is so much better. And she will obviously surpass her

dannylenwinn

Yay

Mcfinley

Where were you when 8-7 40-15?

Slambodog

Same place Gondor was when the Westfold fell!

DBIGLIZARD

?

Striking_Town_445

Just leaving this here, but if Carlos is wearing that square necked Nike employee shirt in his final....

DBIGLIZARD

If what? Shut up!

Striking_Town_445

I will shut my fuck up.

Striking_Town_445

Nike originally designed for a football team. When they rejected the zip and ugly shirts, they decided- oh yeah the mens tennis will take this donation

Sad_Consideration_49

Lmao from tennis forum "Fun fact: by defeating three top10 players on the route to the title Iga scored more top10 wins than all winners of the last seven majors COMBINED."

Imanothermuser

Bruh!

SmoothLettuce

Damn I didn’t even notice she beat 3 top 10 seeds that’s crazy

terrebattue1

Good job Swiatek and good job Alex Eala for winning the Girls' Singles USO trophy! Eala is a Nadal Academy student and she was born the same day as the starting day of the 2005 French Open, which Rafa won. Eala might be another Nadal fangirl top tennis player in the WTA???

dark_cloudy_eclipse

MABUHAY! ❤️🇵🇭🫶

Slambodog

So, what you're saying is, Ruud is going to win too?

ExcuseYou-What

Martin Landaluce, this year's boys champion, is also a product of the Nadal Academy, just like his predecessor. *strokes chin*

Striking_Town_445

Rafa Academy attracting talent from around the world. They've literally just place the first ever Norwegian in the Us Open finals and now we have Eala, what looks like a killer girl from the Phillipines.

stoic_trader

everyone will hear a lot from this guy in the future, like Alcaraz, fingers crossed

terrebattue1

Eala on the WTA also. She is legit good. She is already #280 in the WTA! Tio Toni and Rafa are amazing

terrebattue1

Fantastic!!!

hojbjerfc

So i know i will get shit for this but i do record the championship points i am at. I don’t watch the phone but ya i record it. It’s funny bc my scream this year was twice as long this year even tho i like Daniil more…why? Because last year the scream immediately turned into tears and disbelief

Slambodog

I just take a picture the moment the out call or double bounce happens and the Champion celebrates

throwaway739299292

Loser behaviour. Grow up hockerbergfc

hojbjerfc

Would I choke from 2 sets and a break up?

throwaway739299292

Maybe

curlyhairedyani

Can’t wait to do this for Alcaraz tomorrow

hojbjerfc

Weird ass way to spell Ruud

curlyhairedyani

He is losing in straight sets!

Unaatennista

I think that’s awesome what a cool memory to have and be able to relive!

hojbjerfc

I just like having that personal video for me. It’s special

stoic_trader

What a time to peak in the tournament for Iga, I think that put Ons off-guard. Ons Should be proud of herself, she played well. I'm pretty sure that there will be posts that will go into detail about how Ons is a choker and all but you know it's just r/tennis

veilsofrealitydotcom

So glad she at least put up a fight in the second set. Iga came out at the highest level. Most people I think would have collapsed under the pressure.

aweap

Thanks Patrick! Simona Halep gets the wooden spoon! 😒

Slambodog

I had her making the Semis

simplecitydress

what does the wooden spoon mean?

aweap

The person who came last in a slam. It has no significance, it's just trivia. To find out who won the wooden spoon you go backwards from the winner. So Swiatek defeated Jabeur, who defeated Garcia, who defeated Gauff, who defeated Zhang, who defeated Marino, who defeated Snigur, who defeated Halep in the first round. 😅

simplecitydress

thanks for explaining that!

hojbjerfc

I count at least 4 times y’all killed iga off this tournament and yet she was the last standing

Gaarando

She was genuinely winning her matches ugly though even this set 2 was bad but Ons Jabeur was somehow worse in that set also.

terrebattue1

I remember when Jabeur lost Wimbledon and she got more love and celebrations than the actual Wimbledon champ! Unless she wins a GS trophy she is merely a GS finalist like Soderling.

Gaarando

Yup, so far she has not shown she can step it up during Slam finals. I mean that set 2 should have really been won. If your opponent is playing a poor set you have to step it up.

hojbjerfc

She has given us 0 reason to doubt her ability to win the ugly matches tho

Gaarando

That's true, but sometimes it does end like at Wimbledon where her opponent simply played well while Swiatek was playing poorly. For some reason during this US Open her opponent could not stop hitting errors while she herself was playing poorly.

terrebattue1

Who cares? She can Brad Gilbert her way to 10+ GS titles. Nobody in 50 years will care about how she won.

aweap

Winning ugly is a pertinent reason to doubt a player's ability, especially considering the dominant form in which Garcia was winning her matches at the same time. Her match against Pegula was absolutely terrible. People were right about second guessing her ability to get through this.

GerbertVonTroff

You have to laugh at how extreme people on the internet are and how much they need to hate individual tennis players. This reddit sub is nowhere near as bad as twitter but even here in the last 24 hours alone we have Alcaraz "blatantly doping", swiatek apparently cheating and distracting her opponents, nadal the ultimate in gamesmanship, djokovic a liar and morally bankrupt person, and raducanu of course being shit on for no apparent reason 😃. Multiply all this by 1000 on twitter and other forums. Pretty sad having to wade through this stuff every day!

kKunoichi

This is why I don't have twitter. All the fandom crazies (in every fandom) are on there

swirkh

I personally use Twitter only as another news feed (I follow maybe like 20-30 accounts). I quit reading twitter comments / replies to tweets a long time ago.

GerbertVonTroff

Yeah and I think all you need is a bit of success to become a target of the deranged. Sinner for example seems like the most harmless and likeable guy, wait till he wins a slam and I'm sure they'll find a reason to hate him too! 😃

stoic_trader

stole my words

Koeienvanger

When I can't be bothered with all the nonsense I just stay away from it. Don't need to follow everything on social media.

Striking_Town_445

If she wants to hit Rafa's record thats a minimum slam a year for the next 19 years. Let's go :)

Striking_Town_445

Iga has twice as many points than the No 2. Her achievement stats this year at 21 are pretty wild.

dannylenwinn

Nice

aweap

She also has almost double the points currently held by ATP world no.1 in live rankings ☺️

Striking_Town_445

Jesus my lord. I love thst for this sweet girl. I remember when she said 'its pretty amazing that Rafa would text...someone like me.' As if she considers herself a total nobody

studiousmaximus

the most dominant #1 since serena in like 2015 for sure. insanely impressive at her age.

Collecting_Cans

That Iga interview on the ESPN set was so fun

Slambodog

So Iga won 57% of her return games this tournament, 40 out of 70. The only player to be above the Mendoza line on serve against her was Lauren Davis. Her first RG title was Iga the baker. Her second RG was the second set beast. This title is Return Bot Iga

KCD_OG-78

Kinda crazy thinking back to when Niemeier was straight up blitzing Iga. To the point it looked like Iga was crying into her towel on a changeover and looked like she was on her way out in straights. But then Niemeier got tight and let Iga back in it. Then proceeded to get bageled as her fitness was a factor. All the way from that to this.

studiousmaximus

very true. that was the turning point of iga’s tournament. i think we’d be seeing ons celebrate right now if neimeier had gotten the job done.

Zloggt

My older bro’s gf is Polish. Bet she and her family and mad happy rn…

majkkali

I’m Polish and I can tell you that everyone is extremely happy right now in Poland. Iga basically popularised this beautiful sport in Poland and now people watch her on TV with their whole families. It really is a great feeling to have such an awesome champ :)

ikolp0987

The fans are chanting Thank You in Polish :)

Iheartmalbec

Ngl. Iga's name is great fun to say.

NieThePiet

What is the most points from a women in a single season?

Slambodog

Depends if it's calculated historically using current metrics. Graf won 4 Majors in 88, Navratilova and Evert had years where they only lost a couple matches. I'm not sure when Majors became worth 2000 points, someone posted below the Williams Sisters and Azarenka have all broken 10k points

Striking_Town_445

One wonders..where will it all end 🙂

Cloudy0-

Ons backstage :(

SmoothLettuce

Halep wooden spoon lol

NieThePiet

it will be scary if Iga gets used to the finals and she will be more relaxed there..

BiscuitsLeGuin

Catherine on Prime: is she - Andy Murray voice - getting closer? Definitely here for Ons/Andy comparisons. It will feel so great in the end!

studiousmaximus

ons’ best shot is definitely wimbledon. her game is perfectly suited to grass, and iga won’t be as much of a factor there for some time. hopefully she gets it done next year. that said, she could certainly win any of the four slams - her game works on every surface. but there’s just so much competition on hard courts, and clay is iga’s domain for the foreseeable future.

ExcuseYou-What

Please relay what they actually said because some of us do not get Prime coverage lol. Like what do they *really* think?

BiscuitsLeGuin

So the “Andy Murray voice” thing was Catherine’s own addition, not sure if that was clear. Like she didn’t do the voice she just said it as a reference. As for what they said in response, I don’t remember super well but I think they generally answered in the affirmative to that question. I *think* they said she might have found herself a bit startled to be in the US open final so that could have affected her nerves but idk she was so focused this week that I think it’s more likely to be bad memories of Wimbledon

ExcuseYou-What

(By the way I was asking a serious question so thank you so much for actually answering lmao) Lol I get that Catherine reference -- she's done it so much on TP haha. Yeah, I'm just really worried for Ons, tbh. I think she's really pushing herself to her wits' end, mentally speaking, to get to these finals, only to face her inner demons at the end. Physically, she never looked gassed at all so that's not at all my worry. I'm just really eager to see her put forth her game in these big moments without big lapses (a la set 1). She also needs to grab the initiatives when she's handed these opportunities -- way too many lapses in focus, like even when Iga is on her back foot and Ons still doesn't manage to put it away.

Yeah it’s definitely been a very similar pattern between the two finals, like just completely losing intensity. Maybe some more Masters finals would help. Like she could get a sense of the big occasion and get used to it. I know she won Madrid but just like more of them yknow xD (Also no problem!)

ExcuseYou-What

I still think the Wimbledon final might hurt more because she had the lead (set and a break IIRC) whereas this time, she was always trying to catch up from behind (very similar to the Charleston final, where she was trying so hard but could never seize a lead). It feels so weird knowing that she's already done *so much* this year, and yet it can still be such a bitter pill to swallow.

BiscuitsLeGuin

Yeah, I hope she’s able to reflect on how much she *has* achieved this year, and realise that if she can find a way to calm the nerves she can do even more! You’re right though obviously there’s the difference in sets so not the same pattern, same sort of headspace I guess - she just got there earlier 😔

Psychological_Bug676

Iga definitely getting 5+ slams

studiousmaximus

bold call to say she’ll win 2 more 😂 she’s 21; this girl is winning 8 slams minimum

Psychological_Bug676

Ikr. I didn’t want get too carried away lol

ForeverAMemebaser

3ga Swiatek

SmoothLettuce

If Iga goes on another tear to finish this season I could see her doubling her slam count next year

studiousmaximus

would be a tough ask. she did just win the US open but was losing in multiple matches (neimeier and sabalenka) and had to fight back. she’s not nearly as dominant on hard as she is on clay. and i presume she won’t be winning wimbledon next year. gonna take her a few years to figure that one out, i think.

stoic_trader

The most important question right now. How many titles does Iga need to get her used to the occasion and deliver a non-nervous post-match speech? The selfish devil in me says, never ever change Iga, that's part of you we all introverts love.

brentaltm

As someone with terrible social anxiety, I could see all over her face that she was feeling uncomfortable. I think as she gets older she’ll be able to relax more.

Annjul666

It's the exhaustion and emotion, during conferences her voice is much calmer and lower
