What happens in Rennes when the call is challenged? Is it just flashing lights?
If Emma advanced further in the US Open would she not be playing in this current tournament?
I imagine it depends on how far. Though Siniakova made the doubles final, and is playing there on Wednesday.
I am just going to go against the script and bet on Nadal winning the ATP finals this year. Am i wrong?
Will he even play tho 🤔
I’ve become kinda hooked on tennis, I’ve rly only watched USO and Wimbledon for years, but now I want more. When’s the next worthwhile tournament?
One trick is check out the daily discussion thread on a daily. Usually they are most active during slams but you'll see plenty of activity during other top tournaments as well. Activity would also increase during some unusually good tournament or drama.
Anyway next top tournament I'd say is Laver Cup, which is an exhibition but recognised by ATP. After that you'd have many 250/500s wherein you'd find top players scattered. They are decently entertaining as well.
2 biggest tournaments remaining are Paris Masters and World tour finals, both coming in November.
ATP Schedule: https://www.atptour.com/en/tournaments
WTA Schedule: https://www.wtatennis.com/TOURNAMENTS
After slams, the next tournament levels are 1000, 500 and 250.
In men's tennis the next 1000 level tournament will only happen end of next month, but usually 500 level tournaments have solid draws with at least a few top players. The Laver Cup this month will be fun as well.
If you're rooting for particular players then you'll have to click on the tournament on the site and see which players have entered. And this sub in general will have useful info in the live threads to know what is going on.
Why do so many WTA players touch rackets instead of hand shaking? Don't really see that ever in men's and I don't watch a lot of women's tennis, is that just more normal?
It’s only Marta Kostyuk (Ukrainian) and any Russian cuz she doesn’t like anyone who’s Russian. Everyone at least does a handshake
Yastremska also did it with Azarenka.
What exactly is a bone edema? I’m too afraid to Google lol
Not to be confused with a bone enema
Which I *think* could make the issue worse. But idk.
https://twitter.com/thiemricciardo/status/1569467548818882560?s=46&t=2EUQHQGWVr11AYB_4aNhWg interesting little thread
The WTA finals are going back to China? Um what happened?
Huh? Last I heard it was Fort Worth Texas
I think it’s going to China next year that’s what I heard but this year in Texas.
It's still technically contracted to China for 2023, but WTA also clarified that the China suspension is still in place.
Yes this is what I heard too
In other news Tomic wins the M15 Cancun! 10 points gained gets him back into the 700s
He was just there for spring break.
Does anyone know if Zverev is still playing in the 250 this month. I was kinda shock seeing him pull out of Davis cup since he was on the entry list to play this month
No he’s out probably for the rest of the year with a bone edema
Almost definitely not
Do we know if Federer or Nadal will play at the Laver Cup?
Nadal seems unlikely after USO loss. But even Federer seems to maybe have knee issues.
Any news from Nishikori? He pulled out of washington but I thought he was still close to coming back
He's on the entry list for Tokyo next month.
How do you guys think Alcaraz will do at Paris and tour finals? I say at least quarters semis in Paris, and he will at least make it past the round robin at atp finals. If djokovic isn’t rusty, he has a shot at title. The zverev that stopped him last year, isn’t there this year.
Think he loses early.
There's a customary fall off post first slam for the most part.
It's natural to drop focus especially for a tourney like the Paris master's which effectively does not matter that much ( despite r/tennis treating it and the WTF as indicators of form pre AO for 10+ yrs running now )
I see Djokovic winning the ATP finals and if he's had enough prep Paris too
Obviously upsets happen all the time, but discounting big upsets the four players I still rate above him are Novak, Nadal, Meddy and Sinner (not Meddy and Sinner on clay). So depends on how early he plays one of them.
Probably wins especially with injured zverev alcaraz is unbeatable in best of three
If djokovic plays, he is also a contender. He’s a 5x champion. Even though he hasn’t won it since 2015, Djokovic is always a great indoor HC player
Didn’t he win it last year
Zverev beat Djokovic in the SF and Medvedev in the F last year
I thought the original comment was about Paris, not ATP finals
He has a shot but hes going to be rusty
He's doing Laver, Vienna, Bercy, so he should be fine. If he even qualifies
Isnt the rule if you won a major you just need top 20 to qualify?
Typically yes, but it would be quite bizarre for the ATP to strip Wimbledon of its ranking points while simultaneously giving an automatic entry to the Wimbledon Champion at the year end ATP Finals
But have they announced if they will or not
Nothing either way. The website just says that Turin will welcome the best eight players in the world
Its still likely that djokovic is top 8 right
He's beaten every Top 8 race player he's played in Bo3 format this year, besides Nadal who was 1-1 against him
So, ur saying he will likely win? That’s a good prediction, but I guess I haven’t seen much of him on indoor HC yet
He won in Milan. He did very well in Bercy last year until the crowd got to him against Gaston
Anyone have any idea how much tickets for the WTA Finals might be? I live near where the Finals got moved to and am interested in attending, but there's no ticket information yet.
The Carliga thing goes back to Miami. He said in an interview that he congratulated her but didn't get a response when a journalist asked if they talked after they both won. The sub has memed the shit out of it predictably.
Ruud is a separate meme, I believe. There's two pictures of Emma at the practice courts, one of her looking wistfully at Ruud, another of Carlitos looking wistfully at her while she turns away. It's probably just an out of context frame, but it's good meme material
Kerber has the us open photoshoot 😂https://twitter.com/impetigorx/status/1569364729600307201?s=20&t=DvghBenE1-QHBMKK0MWJOQ
Just saw that Tennys Sandgren is now ranked 446. Wow.
He at least made the most of that AO run. Got his career earnings up to almost $3.5 million. IIRC, he was at less than $200K prior to that run.
I don’t even know who he is
He had 7 match points against an injured Federer at the 2020 AO QF and couldn't convert
good morning to my grand slam withdrawals
Ahh so that IG Story of Reilly and Delpo on a plane together exists now so let me just process that.
It is a player I regularly talk to and my childhood idol.
So what if they are on a plane together?
I can’t be excited about that?
Emma somehow managed to increase her ranking from 83 to 73 by winning that one match
I mean, she did tell us... ;)
It's the last tournament she gets to play with her Top 10 ranking based Seed. After that it's hardwork and grind to get back to that level.
Tournament is kinda stacked too. Alja, Ryba, Alize etc. It's a good field.
Ofc winning would do wonders for her and she only needs 4 more match wins, but she hasn't done that since USO so I'm not holding hope currently.
I know it's a long process for her to gain confidence and comeback properly, and I'll wait and watch every match meanwhile.
She won 10 in a row last year. She can win a 250
mess. why am i more excited now as an Emma fan for this grinding phase? (i always did tend to favor underdogs…)
One match at a time; probably beat Friedsam not so sure about Mandlik then probably Potapova or Parry.
Mandiik is 150. She’ll kill her
Why is Mandlik Mandlik anyway. And not Mandlikova? I thought womens names had an ova at the end. Also it’s her mothers name?
I’m guessing it’s cuz she has a twin brother and they’re born and raised in the states. Americans will be confused why siblings, twins that too, have slightly different last names. Hana probably thought it’d be easier to just have the same one and shorter the better
Ok that’s a fair explanation. But why has she taken the mothers name and not fathers?
Why not? We don’t know if the dad is in their life, plus the mom is a tennis legend
It’s a Czech name. And there are dozens of Czech players with sponsorship deals using their Czech names
Not to mention Russians
You are talking shite
Without wishing to get ahead of myself… potential for Raducanu to meet Cornet again in the SF…
Hardly doubt any of those two will beat Potapova.
Also would mean three wins in a row, I bet Emma would take that.
I think Stuttgart was the last time she won 3 in a row?
Edit : Actually she hasn't won 3 in a row since USO. Man....
What’s the closest to a normal match end you’ve seen a retirement? Can’t be many at match point, most players would try to even just let the opponent win I feel.
This year when Bublik retired after the second set against PCB. One set all and he just wanted to leave.
Someone (I forget who) retired when she was down 0-5 in the third to Madison Brengle.
**EDIT:** It was Yastremska
I don't remember who it was against but I remember betting on Benoit Paire 5-6 years ago and he retired as he got broken for *5-4 in the third set (so I got my money back).
Yastremska is notorious for this. I’m pretty sure she did it this year in the 3rd set at AO about to get bageled. And if i’m not mistaken she’s retired facing MP before
edit: i thought u were looking for some fun facts & i didn’t even realize the context of this and it was also Yastremeska again LOL
Honestly glad no more Zverev for a few more months. Possibly even until 2023. Bone Edema can take ages to heal.
I have loved past few months, not having to see Hate posts every 5 seconds. Tennis is better if the Authorities are left to deal with him, be it the ATP investigation or if his ex GF decides to go to court.
But I do not miss seeing the million posts about him here. Atmosphere on this sub is so much more wholesome with Iga and Carlos winning. Many don't even care about him anymore. Legit like outside of like 5 people noone even knew he was gonna play in Davis Cup. And then he gets injured, we get 1 post about it, and it's literally "Oh no, anyways".
As it should be.
Just move on, he's not worth your time.
Karma is a b*tch
The ex GF made an accusation on Social Media the day after Z announced he was going to be a father and she never followed up and have refused to talked to any relevant authority who could impartially investigate Zverev . She spends most of her time in NY and she could just walk into any police station, any women support group office and report her complaint.
You live in a alternate reality where you dont understand that the fact the DV is a terrible shameful condemnable situation, does not mean that everyone can accuse someone else of DV and have him/her crucified on a public stage without providing evidene or collaborating with an investigation.
DV is true in something like 90-95% of the cases yet we get this same argument 100% of the time. I think Kyrgios and Zverev have proven with their thuggish and bully behavior towards refs and umps that this is not a coincidence.
Another retirement in a raducanu match 🤭
How did I not know Emma was playing today? Had no idea another tournament was happening right after the US Open.
She has a sub on here.
Usually we get posts with Draws for upcoming WTA tournaments or ATP tournaments here.
Somehow we didn't get either for Postroz and Chennai. Doesn't help that currently the New No. 1 Hype and US open finals were much bigger deals.
If she wins more than 2 she will be talked about again.
This profile lists her upcoming tournaments
Ah, shame it had to end that way. Good performance by Emma but feel bad for Dayana as I like her too. The grind continues for both women
I'm gonna head into the sportsbook sub to watch the degens freak out at this retirement lol...hope Yastremska is ok though.
Poor Yastremaka, always wanted her to do well and she’s got horrible luck
That was acting
Well, Emma is through, relatively straightforwardly. Really have to feel for Yastremska though - at this level you have to imagine the potential short/mid-term disruption to future tournaments and earning is worse than the fact it curtailed this match itself (even if it did confirm what was looking like it would soon be that 8th loss in a row)
Honestly not even surprised something like that happened tbh. Kept trying to hit every shot for 6. Her form was wild all match.
Yastremska just retired at 6-2 5-3 30-0
Yo Portoroz DJ, I don't think "Happy" is the most appropriate song in this situation
Two points away from losing I’m guessing she’s going to retire. No point hurting herself more.
Really feel for Yastremska, hope it's just a minor niggle
Oh no, Dayanas racquet goes flying and she's holding her wrist. It's been wrapped all match.
Hah, physio being called for Yastremska at 0-30 3-5. She does seem in genuine pain, but she also does have some previous.
I mean, you wouldn’t have got long odds on this match being won by retirement by a player in a losing position anyway, but this is pretty lolz.
Ah that's really rough for Yastremska :(
Oh dear :(
Woah. Carlos and Emma's championship points + celebrations were very similar. Played side by side here https://twitter.com/RaducanuIN/status/1569358428731998209?s=20&t=IxN8r-hcgLnRtKTsGJER6w
Nike is eating
I’m shipping Emma and Casper myself
Solid hold by Emma, after facing a couple of break points.
The fact that media still worships the ground Zverev walks on after what he did in Acapulco as well as the allegations (which btw he deleted all statements about it off his twitter) is wild to me. This man could literally punch a ballkid and the media would talk about how it isn’t his fault bc he loves dogs so much
What is your source for media “worshipping”?
I mean are you kidding? Jannik Schneider talking about how “oh Zverev definitely wins this Us open if not injured” italian journalists being all “forza zverev” after the injury announcemeny and just literally every for the past 2 years from Jose Morgado, Jon Werthiem(until Acapulco but even since then he picked it back up) and every other big tennis journalist
They are talking about his tennis. Bc they are sports writers. Do you think they should become subjective purely bc of the actions you mention?
Sports writers should not ignore the personal lives of athletes if they include very credible serious accusations of a crime.
Your an idiot if you actually believe that. Firstly they are accusations. Secondly. Wtf are you talking about
So no accusations are ever reported? Just silence and then all of a sudden oh this world class and famous athlete is in court, didn’t mention it before?
Read the articles. They are well researched and damning.
But why should that hinder them reporting objectively on his tennis?
Of course the accusations are reported ffs. How do you think we all know them?
I have no position on Zverev's guilt or innocence, but the issue is a little more complicated than your statement implies.
For instance, ESPN doesn't want to end up looking foolish like the Washington Post did printing Amber Heard's story. Up to this point, the only person printing Sharapova's accusations is Ben Rothenberg, a man who cost ESPN a lot of money and bad press in the past when they fired Doug Adler based on false accusations made by Rothenberg. I'm sure ESPN's lawyers are not going to let their on-air personalities talk about a story that's only been investigated and corroborated by Rothenberg.
I am saying acting like everything is normal with him is wrong and these people ARE SUBJECTIVE. They are openly rooting for him.
It is normal bc he hasn’been convicted of a crime
It’s the governing bodies job to censure athletes if and when they bring the sport into disrepute or break rules .
You are crazy
And they have shown they won’t do that with zverev
And you think it’s a sports writers job? To stop writing about his tennis objectively bc of allegations? Note ALLEGATIONS not convictions
I wonder what planet some of you are on. With regard to how the world works
So he was only alleged to have attacked that umpire in Acapulco?
Emma's signed up for Seoul next instead of the Tokyo which is the 500 same weekend. Honestly has me excited because she seems to be taking the grind seriously instead of just playing higher level tourneys hoping to spike her way to the top.
Yeah. She had signed up to Seoul for a whole though. Likely paid
Oof, another DF break from Dayana.
Emma remains very subdued, only heard one "C'mon", at 30-all on her serve.
She plays better when she is subdued
Mmm. She certainly channeled that ice-queen energy in her USO run, but there seemed to be a lot more... joy? with it to her play back then.
Still doesn't look to me like she's enjoying herself out there.
Big smile after the match to her camp?
Anybody know the name of the comm on Amazon Prime for Emma's match?
Thanks for the hint 😀
Anywhere I can check if Kenin is signed up for any recent tourneys? She looked a lot better in Cleveland than at the beginning of her comeback.
https://live-tennis.eu/en/wta-schedule - looks like Kenin is using protected ranking to get into WTA500 Tokyo
Emma takes first set relatively easily although Yastremaska helped in that cause a lot.
That’s how tennis works
Friend watched USO final and wants to get into tennis now, says he wants to support the 'Arsenal' of tennis, any suggestions? 🤣
Ruud and Norrie above are great shouts. I'd also suggest Evans, Dimitrov, Brooksby. For WTA there's Jabeur, Kontaveit, Sakkari
I don’t know anything about arsenal, but based on the comments gonna say PCB
Used to be Thiem, now Ruud for suree
Ruud is quite Arsenal. Actually Norrie is very Arsenal.
Kyrgios. Plays attractive tennis but liable to totally fuck it all up in easy matches.
Arsenal meaning powerhouse? I don't know soccer.
If it's that, obviously the big two still playing, but who knows how long that'll last.
No not meaning powerhouse. He means the nature of how they win/become top players
I think Musetti will start making moves soon, and his game has some Federer in it.
Sinner is already top tier, but IMO he's going to be the best in the world one day soon.
FYI Arsenal are famous for winning 1-0. Grinding. Not much flair. That’s what he means. So not Sinner
'Not much flair'? Pffffhh. Arsenal became popular all throughout the world because of their free-flowing style of football which was considered among the most beautiful in the world during the 2000s and early 2010s, right behind Barcelona. It's this, coupled with the fact that Arsenal were usually the underdogs that hadn't won a trophy in a long time but still played attractive football, that contributed to their popularity and what the OP's friend is looking for in a player, I guess.
OP, I think Ruud might be of interest to your friend.
Ok. Another explanation is they have a rep as hard to beat. Don’t concede goals. Which makes Novak quite Arsenal then
Ah gotcha, then my two picks are literally the opposite lol.
He doesn’t mean up and coming. I’ve answered him anyway. Norrie is Arsenal FIN
Man or woman?
Not a soccer fan, how would you describe Arsenal?
Good, but always finds a way to shoot itself in foot. Can't handle pressure. Ends up on 4th place often. Loves to reminescence about that one "untouchable" season.
Another DF on set point. That is a choke. She's lucky Yastremska is spraying errors and can't hit the court.
You are talking shit/don’t know what choke means.
Lol DF on set point leading 40-0 and 5-2.
'Wow fucking choker'
You really don't see the inherent logic fail in saying Emma is choking while winning the first set 6-2?
Emma is looking solid here though Yastremska's having such an awful match that just keeping the ball in play will be enough for the win
That is one sparse looking crowd. Can't be more than 150 people there.
Which tournament are you referring to?
Feels like going right back to (WTA) basics
Wow. raducanu choking bad
choking refers to closing out a match. Not at 4-1 first set
She had the opportunity to go 5-1 up, and she got tight and gifted the game to her opponent with a string of unforced errors, including double fault. That is a choke, due to mental issues. Nothing to do with closing out the match. She couldn't close out the set.
Haha. Do you know how tennis scoring works? You don’t get extra points for how well you win a set. 6-1 is the same as 6-2. Idiot
She won the set 6-2
After another double fault on set point. Her opponent is losing, Emma is not winning.
Raducanu derangement syndrome in action
It’s quite scary isn’t it. I’ll give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he doesn’t watch much tennis and doesn’t know how the scoring works
Just a boring troll
Oh looks it’s 2-1 on serve someone is choking 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Yastremska seems like an even more inconsistent Giorgi. Hits returns Carlitos couldn't get to, but also misses shots I wouldn't miss.
As of the 2019 Australian Open, Yastremska was ranked as the most aggressive player on the WTA Tour, having led the tour with 28.6 per cent of her shots ending in a winner, an unforced error, or an opponent's forced error; this statistic is known as the Aggression Score
More aggressive than jelana is saying something
Solid start for Emma - I say solid given that as much as she's a double break up, it's only really partly been her doing...
Can't decide if Emma is playing well or if her opponent is having a nightmare...I suspect the latter.
She always plays like this
I think Emma is playing well enough to keep the pressure on Yastremska, to go for her shots, leading to the errors. But she's not really dictating.
They are similar rankings. This shows me that Emma is def above this level
Having written that, a DF gives up two break points, and she's broken.
This Insomnia-Bad Habits mashup is too wild
How is Emma the number one seed here yet needed a wild card? If her ranking prior to US Open is still valid shouldn't it have qualified her automatically as well?
Bc they used rankings as of yesterday
Maybe she applied to join the tournament after the cut-off time.
