No double bagel :(

EffBO94

Emma getting the win on her very first match point after what happened yesterday lmao tennis sure is topsy-turvy all right Best thing about Emma's win is that Wickwayer legit played really well, seemed she got a bit rattled at the end by Emma's line judging tho lol. The funny thing is I don't think it's even gamemanship or whatever she thought , judging from old videos Emma's been doing this for years, can't help herself calling her own lines like she's still a junior hahaha, old habits die hard lol

SvaPrabho

She's been doing it for years. And it has been gamesmanship for years. Just like Iga making noise when her opponent is about to serve is gamesmanship. They got away with it in juniors. Not so easy on the tour, with TV cameras covering multiple angles, replays and commentators. All the juniors had to call their own lines. Only one or two of them continue to do it at critical points after more than a year on the WTA tour.

EffBO94

call me naive then i genuinely think that was unintentional gamesmanship from Emma, think the line judge was gonna call it out anyway so thought it was kinda pointless for her to do that, I would've laughed it off if i was Wickwayer as funny as it is Emma still doing that at 21/22 will deffo raise eyebrows from me tho lol, despite what I said I think there's only so long you can plead youthful innocence and old habits lol >Just like Iga making noise when her opponent is about to serve is gamesmanship. rah Iga does that? lol that's mad, on top of the hand waving at the net too lol...well don't really hate it tho, she does whatever it takes to win i kinda respect it tbh, even in tennis you can't be all nicey nice i guess haha here i was thinking junior tactics surely don't work at tour level full of experienced pros...guess maybe it does lol

SvaPrabho

I don't think you're naive. I just think you're in love 😉

EffBO94

Haha she's pretty but not every fan of Emma's in love with her, I plead the fifth😂

Jezza2812

Well, here's hoping that the match against Linette isn't the first one on the slate tomorrow - no chance I'm getting up at 4AM to watch it lol

kamikashi

Am I jinxing if I say kudermetova is gonna double bagel? Too early? I knocked on wood. 4-0 second set. Sorry for the jinx 🙃

overtired27

Dare I believe… 3 in a row…?

SvaPrabho

Next opponent Linette is no pushover

Jezza2812

Yes!

rubbish_bin030121

Penko time now💪

BattleMage2000-

Oh yess, excited about her outfit.. Didn't watch the last match where she barely survived against ranked 688.

rubbish_bin030121

To be honest, Jeong did well and the weather in east asia is not good for european

SvaPrabho

Yes! Excellent! Well done Emma! She really does love the Wilson balls.

Bonoahx

Does this tournament also use those regular duty balls? I thought it was only the US Open swing

SvaPrabho

You just have to look at how Emma was hitting her shots to see what balls they use. Shots from both players were really flying. I don't have confirmation these are the Regular balls. But Wilson is a tournament sponsor.

kamikashi

Wait I thought the ball thing was how they aren’t used outside of that north American swing and not sold outside of America lmao

SvaPrabho

The balls are sold around the world. You can definitely buy them in Australia. Some heavy-hitting players don't like them because they're lighter, and harder for them to control. But any top player can get as many balls as they need, direct from Wilson.

kamikashi

Wtf lmaooo I thought the controversy was how so many players can’t get them outside of America which I always felt was only a disadvantage to poorer players and that part shoulda been the main issue since richer players would obvs have no issues. Do you know if Tokyo is using the same balls?

SvaPrabho

Dunlop sponsors Tokyo Open, so they will use Dunlop balls there. The Regular Wilson balls are lighter and not as furry as other balls, so they don't spin as much, and fly through the air faster. This handicaps players like Iga, who want the ball to sit up high, really whack it and use heavy topspin to keep it in the court. They have to use less power to keep it in the court. Emma hits softer, but much flatter, so the Regular Wilson balls suit her game. They skid through the courts, keeping low, which is not such a problem for her with her grip and ball trajectory, but is difficult for players wanting to use lots of topspin. In the clay swing, Emma started to use more topspin, even moonballs, and had some success with it, extending rallies and relying on defence. But she carried that over to grass and even hardcourt, which is a mistake with her weight of shot. All out attack is her best strategy, ending points quickly. Fast, skiddy hardcourts with lighter balls is best for her. Let's hope she can make a deep run in Seoul and get some confidence back.

tigrefacile

Important win, possibly.

Jezza2812

It's trivial, but somewhat noticeable how Wickmayer's one challenge was on a point where it was quite clearly the wrong call against her, and her challenge successfully rectified that, whereas Raducanu I don't think has made a single successful challenge yet, instead using it constantly for points where the replay shows it was a pretty clear call, almost just throwing them away for the sake of a brief rest. It's harmless in these situations really, but not a great habit to get into (or continue given she's done this before) in the long-term versus preserving those challenges for when they matter (although the more tournaments that move into automated line calls, the less that impulse will matter I guess). e: and there's another totally pointless challenge right as I make this comment to use up her last challenge of the set. Now she's fucked if/when there's an egregious call against her in the new few games...

EffBO94

Yeah I agree the difference in experience was on show there, Emma fully showing that it is indeed still her first rookie year on tour lol. Good thing she won the 2nd set 7-5, if Wickmayer had been able to hold serve to make it 6-6 the tiebreak could've been peak for her with 0 challenges left lol Another thing for Emma to learn on the job I guess, how and when to pick your challenges

Jezza2812

Yeah it's one of those proper sort of 'you don't miss it till it's gone' things lol All well and good throwing them away on the grounds of 'well as long as I play better than her I've got nothing to worry about' and then you find yourself the victim of a terrible call and fuming with no outlet because you used said outlet (and solution) up pointlessly earlier haha

Earnmuse_is_amanrag

Raducanu's biggest issue is that she's too conservative mentally. She needs to hit harder, closer to the lines and come forward and not worry about the consequences too much. She plays it too safe, far too often, especially in the big moments.

Nastypav12

Good serving from Yanina has made this a battle.

Arteam90

I'm guessing not, but are they broadcasting the Laver Cup practice session today?

binsonfiremiss

What's up with Mladenovic sitting on a fold up chair practically on the court?

Metamorphes

Waiting for her dubs with Wickmayer 🤔

kamikashi

Kudermetova up 5-0 but well, expected scoreline there. Didn’t realize the next round for Samsung is Mugu. Def a test to see if Mugu can get her mojo back but idk…

SvaPrabho

I'm an expert lipreader. The cameraman just caught Tursonov in the crowd saying to Emma's agent, Chris Helliar: "I have no fucking idea, mate." Wonder what the question was.

overtired27

“Are you gonna be her coach next week?”

Jezza2812

not again I beg you Emma, not again

No-Abbreviations8946

Wickmayer breaks back to love... what is happening

soysaucesyndicate

What time in GMT is fed playing? I can’t miss it no matter what.

Metamorphes

The Night Session on Friday begins at 7pm (UK) and will include a singles first and then the dubs. So I would guesstimate something like 10pm for Feds dubs.

SvaPrabho

Emma gone walkabout again. Wickmayer holds to love, then Emma opens her own service game with a DF and gives up the break. I guess it's an improvement. For most of this year, Emma played well in the first set, then collapsed at the beginning of the second. Now she collapses towards the end of the second...

Earnmuse_is_amanrag

When did Raducanu's serve get this good?

SvaPrabho

Do you remember the final point of the USO? She has always been able to serve.

tigrefacile

MUST WORK ON OVERHEADS… MUST WORK ON OVERHEADS…

Xenosys83

The Djokosmash needs work.

Jezza2812

God, she has got to work on those overheads when she's running backwards; that's multiple times she's just botched it completely and not got it over the net

Jezza2812

Right, now comes the key period - Wickmayer holds and finally gets on the board in the second; now Raducanu needs to keep going in a way that she was very much unable to do at 5-0, 40-15 yesterday...

Metamorphes

Are there no women umpires at the Seoul tournie? I haven't watched all the matches but can't remember seeing any at those I've seen. Curious as its a wta event.

Jezza2812

Raducanu looking so much more confident and aggressive all of a sudden; really does support the view that a lot of her issues are mental more than anything else, when she's able to open up and let loose a bit like this on the back of a run of games.

SvaPrabho

Maybe she just really likes Korean food? Certainly looks to be enjoying her tennis today.

Xenosys83

Raducanu is taking Wickmayer's serve to the cleaners.

revolversbreath

YAY emma leads 2-0 in the second set, but we do not unclench with emma right?

Jezza2812

you got that right lol

revolversbreath

i'm so hungry but i can't leave to prepare snacks, at 4-2.

revolversbreath

4-4 there goes my grilled cheese sandwich.🙃

Jezza2812

I just want to be able to leave and go to the gym hahaha

SvaPrabho

Fantastic returning from Emma. Wickmayer is playing well above her ranking of #460. Why is she ranked so low? Was she injured?

Xenosys83

With her Wimbledon points this year, she would have been ranked somewhere between 250 and 300, but she's a former number 12 and slam SFist so she's got some pedigree.

Jezza2812

Gave birth last year; only seems to have returned to tournaments really this summer

SvaPrabho

32 years old. Got a career high of #12 but was ranked outside top #1000 at the beginnning of the year.

Jezza2812

5 games in a row won for Raducanu for the second match in a row. Hopefully this second set turns out better after that occurrence than yesterday's did...

Earnmuse_is_amanrag

Did Raducanu just do a crush and rush? I'm impressed.

EffBO94

Out of curiosity what's a crush and rush? Genuinely don't know haha

Earnmuse_is_amanrag

When you take a return super early, crush it, and rush to the net behind it straight away.

EffBO94

Oh I see, cheers🙂 yeah Emma's always been a great returner, but what from everyone says maybe not so good at the net tho haha... Guess her doing that is a sign that she really has improved since last year and it's just about consistency and fitness now

Complex_Rhubarb_3411

How are y’all streaming the Japan and Korean open?

SvaPrabho

Here you go. Knock ourself out. [http://mz.freestreams-live1.com/tennis-live-stream4/](http://mz.freestreams-live1.com/tennis-live-stream4/) Make sure you use an adblocker to avoid annoying popups

redditfireranger

Can someone screen record/ DVR Roger's last match at the Laver cup. Thanks in advance. I have no idea how to watch it here in the US

Complex_Rhubarb_3411

Hey how do you stream the Japan open on Amazon prime video? Any Brits here that can help?

Jezza2812

There's no specific homepage for the individual tournaments; you just have to go to the Sport part of the Prime menu, then find the games you want to watch from the list of live events (which mixes in things from Tokyo, Seoul etc.) e: I was wrong, there is a specific subpage for the tournament, so yeah go on Sport, then Toray Pan Pacific Open etc. then pick the match from there

Complex_Rhubarb_3411

Thanks!

overtired27

Go to sports

overtired27

Was wondering why I keep hearing that annoying Samsung ringtone and realised it’s coming from the tennis match in Seoul…

kamikashi

I wonder if it’s Covid or just regular illness with Naomi. Wanted to see her level against someone like Haddad Maia on the rise. I suppose if it’s Covid it’s not a bad time in the season to get it

Regular_Antelope4137

too much sushi (raw fish) perhaps, might be just digestive problem (WTA said stomach ache)

d1ngal1ng

Or maybe she just can't be bothered.

kamikashi

Ohhh they expanded on the illness details. Food poisoning prob? Man that’s shitty timing

kamikashi

Samsung man continuing her good form about to close out the match in straight sets

tigrefacile

Good to see her absolutely disrespecting first serves.

Jezza2812

Much more like it!

Regular_Antelope4137

honestly I think Raducanu is a borderline servebot

SvaPrabho

If you watched her at last year's USO, you would have seen one of the finest displays of return of serve from Raducanu. She has a lot of weapons when it's all working.

Regular_Antelope4137

Raducanu serving 122km/h in Seoul

Xenosys83

She and Tursunov have definitely been tinkering with that serve. She's hitting the 1st serve a lot harder, but missing a lot more as well. Not sure if that's the right play going forward.

SvaPrabho

Emma's serve definitely needed revving up. She was serving >70% first serves in. That's too high, which means she's being too safe with it, not going close enough to lines or not hitting it hard enough. 1st serve % should be between 55-60% in. If she's hitting better first serves, then can expect to win higher number of points with less effort.

breezingtime

Did I just see a 96 kph serve from Emma? That's less than 60 miles per hour...

kamikashi

I think the serve speed gun must be broken cuz I’m pretty sure it recorded an ace as 84kph

Jezza2812

Peak Raducanu, superbly breaking serve, then immediately surrendering the break right back with double faults

Hot-Passenger-8396

Must be super frustrating for her - zero consistency in her game the last 11 months

razorsharp3000

Okay Emma I see you >_>

Xenosys83

Raducanu going god mode to get a break of serve to love.

SvaPrabho

Radders is back! Incredible returning to break to love. 3-2. Let's go!

Hot-Passenger-8396

Am I the only one who thinks Raducanu looks a bit weak/tired? Like there’s no power in her

zhenyuan

Emma attacked every serve so far

Xenosys83

Right now? No. This is aggressive as I've seen her play for a while.

overtired27

Can’t say I agree. Obviously she’s just broken solidly, but I wasn’t feeling that she was weak earlier either. Both came out pretty pumped to me.

SvaPrabho

She's looking on fire to me.

vidarteg

Xin Wang is a problem

gleba080

Naomi went 1-1 while playing 9 minutes of tennis, impressive

MrsTMLJ

That's got to be some kind of record.

MrsTMLJ

Was so excited to see Osaka play today. Once again she's withdrawn.

aweap

It's kinda sad (although predictable) to know that the only seeds to survive their first match in Japan so far have played absolute nobodies. Muguruza beat world no. 177 Papamichail, Pliskova beat world no. 214 Shinikova and BHM beat world no. 210 Naito. Only 3 seeds left now. BHM (who got a w/o over Osaka today), Mugu (already in quarters after first match) and Kudermetova who's playing her first match today against world no.131 Fernanda Contreras Gomez. Any guesses who's gonna win that one? 😒

swirkh

WTA logic would dictate Contreras Gomes wins today

aweap

You were saying...

aweap

Damn! Not watching but I thought Kiki was serving for the match in Seoul. What happened? Looks like Linette rallied to take this to a decider.

lostinmoss

Mladenovic? Failing to close out a match? It can't be.

aweap

It's such a headache. Girl hasn't won two consecutive matches on the main tour since Portoroz last year, though she's won a grandslam on the way. 😓

lostinmoss

Her and Krej need to make a support group

aweap

WTF has happened to her? Absolutely disappeared after Australia. It was so tragic seeing her lose to Parry in Paris (though Diane has improved a lot since then). Seeing all this beside everything she's done in doubles this year is truly bonkers. 🙄

jsnoodles

I just read an absolutely excellent (very G rated) stefaniil fic if anyone is interested dm me.

lostinmoss

I don't know why I was surprised that there are tennis fics. I should be prepared for stuff like this by now

jsnoodles

I’ve been a fanfic person for 20ish years now and I’m still surprised at some of the stuff that pops up.

Psychological_Bug676

So Naomi has pulled out of Tokyo citing injury…sigh

aweap

Such high expectations after Miami, but she hasn't won two matches in a row since then.

Car_Exporter_Japan

I am at the game and was looking forward to seeing her...

Psychological_Bug676

Aww that sucks :((

madisonrees

damn. was excited to watch her.

aweap

Martic's slice is such an underrated shot. It's not the best in the field but it works so well defensively for her, especially on clay and slow courts.

Kooky-Athlete257

Hi all, MuryGoat

swirkh

hi, MuryGOAT

triplejayye

Pliskova and Martic is actually delivering, very fun to watch.

chespiotta

Does ANYONE on this subreddit watch doubles? I hardly ever see anyone talking about it, unless it’s a singles player of importance

shegotofftheplane

Occasionally if that’s the only thing that’s on. Or if it’s fun exhibition doubles (or even Laver Cup). I like Babs/Siniakova (they should’ve won the calendar slam this year) and Rajeev/Joe. Even if the doubles features important singles players, it’s just boring for me seeing generally super short rallies (serve, return, then player at net puts it away) and only find match tiebreaks exciting.

lostinmoss

I do, and I know u/fingerdumbed is a fan of Ram/Salisbury

chespiotta

Nice! Who are you a fan of? For me, I’d have to go with Dabrowski/Olmos on the women’s side, and Cabal/Farah on the men’s side, although I do like Mektic*/Pavic too.

lostinmoss

Ooh, for the wta I have to say Townsend/McNally and SST/Flipkens. For the ATP, Mektic/Pavic and Purcell Ebden are my boys.

brown-guitar

tabilo playing naked

Sad_Consideration_49

lmao saw a comment on twitter "NO ONE directs the ball down the middle like Badosa!" that comment holds up as i'm watching highlights from her match with qinwen. like she was feeding her balls as practice.

swirkh

Emma is now facing Wickmayer, who smoked (probably tired/jet-lagged, but still) Fruhvirtova 6-1 6-4. Wondering how that's gonna go

Just_A_Regular_Mouse

Oof. Raducanu was up 5-0 40-15 on serve and ended up winning 6-4

legohotwing

She seems to have trouble closing out a lot of her sets

[deleted]

Yep she was up 5-3 against Friedsam and ended up losing the set 5-7. Granted there was some fitness issues in the last game but still hugely concerning.

throwawayanon1252

Who’s the mto for in kubler match

HTMListerine

What has happened to Milos Raonic? He's taken an Irish goodbye from the tour. Literally haven't heard any news about him for an age

shegotofftheplane

Gained weight and got married, kinda like Jack Sock (not trying to body shame or judge, just stating a fact). Seems to be enjoying life, he was injury-prone, don’t really see him coming back unless it’s a retirement match at Canada masters or something

GamamJ44

Lmao wtf Kubler. Absolutely love that! About the amount of equipment, a 2 NTRP rated player has.

[deleted]

Anyone have a pic?

Moogy_C

I bet that second racquet is borrowed too, lol. Shopping bag had to be from wherever he got his protein powder this morning.

Incredible point!

evanjd9

what are they waiting on in the korda match, i don’t have audio

RoosterIcy

Good god. I can’t imagine there has ever been a bigger discrepancy between two 250 events in the same week. Metz feels like a 500, while San Diego feels like a challenger. *Decent example of how flawed the ATP rankings are. There needs to be some input regarding quality of opponent like the elo system uses. The top 20 would look radically different.

AffectionateMouse216

Womens tennis used to give bonus points for beating top seeds I think top 8 players in a draw. Added incentive for players to take out top seeds with bonus points. An early round win over number 1 in the world would have more points than otherwise.

cdddr

https://tennisabstract.com/reports/atp_elo_ratings.html Not too big of a difference. 17 out of 20 are both in the ATP top 20 and an ELO top 20 calculation. – Minaur, Botic and Agut would replace Schwartzman, Khachanov and Tiafoe with and ELO ranking system.

RoosterIcy

yElo is more accurate as to who the actual best players are. There are massive differences. For example......Novak and Nadal are #1 and #2. That should say enough but I could go on. http://tennisabstract.com/reports/atp_season_yelo_ratings.html

RoosterIcy

Any mention of the elo ratings gets immediately downvoted. r/tennis conspiracy is that the ATP has lurkers here. Hi (;

araheem94

Grand arrival tomorrow

fujimouse

EstablishmentAway812

Where the fuck is Rafa in Laver Cup

juankruh1250

Did Nadal lost in purpose to Tiafoe because he knew Roger was retiring and didn't want to outshine him?

AdvantageObjective52

Yes you nailed it

araheem94

Yes, Roger also decided to retire so that Nole can win more Wimbledon titles

thcm123

Whyyyyyyy does Domi have to face Hubi

White_Nothing

Thiem with the win. Good match. Hubi gonna be tough and it will be a good test for Thiem to gauge where he is at with his comeback.

etziex

Lots to work on, but domi is constantly moving forward in the right direction. I believe he’ll be back.

icecreamwithketchup

Good win for Domi, looking better every week but still far from his peak level

domithiemsass

Beautiful finish

spencabeast

Wawrinka AND Thiem dubs today, it really is Christmas

sriv_ak_04

Dominic Thiem gets his 2nd Win over Richard Gasquet

theatras

what an angle to find at that stage. this is vintage domi

ryan_scafuri

Dominic randomly falling in love with his drop shot for no reason? We’re back!

theatras

one handed backhand down the line is the sexiest shot in the game.

araheem94

With Roger leaving and Alcaraz having a two-hander, the time of 1HBH is pretty much up

AdvantageObjective52

So true; those are the only 2 players that are on tour

araheem94

I feel like 2HBH has been way more successful in recent years and a lot of us liked the 1HBH because we looked up to Roger. If Alcaraz is likely to be the most dominant player for the next 10 years, then it's likely that we will see less and less players coming up with a 1HBH

etziex

DOWN THE LINE BACKHAND

laserfloyd80

Is Gasquet's racket only partially gripped? That's what it looks like to me

pcCqkBQZLN

yea

laserfloyd80

I wonder why...

jbartlettcoys

I'm reminded of the older dude who plays my local disc golf course barefoot. Doesn't need shoes because he just doesn't throw into the rough. Richard doesn't use a full grip as he's never gonna need it lol. A combination of logic and flexing.

domithiemsass

The backhand is just ridiculous man. Still a top 10 backhand in the world for sure. If he gets back to his best it would probably be 5 or 6

etziex

I think the biggest issue in Dominic’s comeback has been his choice in clothing, he used to wear cool colorful adidas t shirts. Now he wears these popped collar pieces of garbage.

domithiemsass

I think it looks great man. But that AO 2020 outfit 🔥🔥

etziex

AO 2020 will always hold a special place in my heart, so sad I was never able to purchase the shirt lol

domithiemsass

Yeah my coach had that shirt, that match with rafa 🥶🥶

etziex

Dominic’s forehand looks horrible everytime he hits it.. it literally looks like he’s just spinning it in lmao

jbartlettcoys

For months I've been saying the clay season 2023 is when we should start judging Domi by his former standards again and increasingly I feel optimistic for his level by then. Not gonna be concerned by any ups and downs for the rest of this year and even AO 2023 is a bit of a freeroll imo, but then if he's not a factor by next RG you have to start wondering if he'll ever get back to where he was.

hojbjerfc

I think his aggressive goal should be an RG seeding (he could VERY EASILY do this if he finds some form) and more conservative is to be around 50 by then

domithiemsass

Shitty forehand there, he’s just not timing it well. It’s not clean, that’s an issue of practice though

obi_kennawobi

What is going on with the Metz crowd...

icecreamwithketchup

After a bit of a slow start, Domi has really found his range/depth. Very few errors from the FH

NearTheWater

Tuned in at Them 2-3 behind, very happy for him that his tennis seems to be this solid!

[deleted]

Gasquet's about to lose 5 in a row oof.

domithiemsass

ALLEZZZ DOMI

[deleted]

Didn't watch Kenin's double matchup. How did she look?

Sweetcarolinelove

It was one of their opponent's final matches as well, retirement ceremony post matcg

Nastypav12

Played well paired with Samsonova; wore Brengle-style full length warm-ups.

cdddr

Gasquet not going for any winners against Thiem. Would probably be enough to win a few months ago, but Thiem is slowly improving towards his former level.

lostinmoss

Wawrinka vs Medvedev and (possibly) Thiem vs Hurkacz are wild second rounds
