Queenwen & Queen Penko into the finals

jannar24

Aleksandra Krunić forced to retire while she was leading 6-4 5-4 and serving for the match, what is going on today

escherbach

Sorry for Emma Raducanu, maybe she won't even be able to make a career at the highest level in tennis. Which would be sad. Will still be an icon and an example for young women of what you can achieve in sport for all time

EffBO94

Penko hitting winners left and right, Emma in real danger of getting bageled... Edit; just as I said that I see Emma retired lol, probably the right choice can't beat someone like Penko if you're not 100%. Too bad tho, was a great match

NoirPochette

Emma called it. No point injuring yourself more especially down a double break

Nymthae

Argh Emma, shame

usurp_jiw

Tbf there were some encouraging signs for Emma towards the end of that set. Hit a few more winners in the last few games.

Sikkly290

Every tourney it looks more and more likely Raducanu's body just can't handle the stresses of long stints of professional level play. Obviously still early in her career so its not set in stone, but it looks rather grim. Really hope that she figures out a way to get past her issues, she has the skillset to back up the USO win.

xGunners94x

She says she’s doing more training in between matches to get more robust which she says was the cause of her injury in Slovenia so it’s probable it was the case in Korea. It can pay off for her in the long run.

SvaPrabho

Penko moves much better than I expect. I thought Emma should be trying to run her around side-to-side to tire her, but Penko is surprisingly light on her feet, and very quick.

eib1000

Ok. Break her. Hold. Then just go for broke

EffBO94

penko 5-2 up huh? guess this will go to 3 sets big up zheng btw her first WTA final right? first Linda F now her, the breakout teens really breaking out this month haha. hopefully Emma can join them and make *her* first WTA tour final but with the MTO and Penko taking charge?, er "it's not looking good brev" haha

NoirPochette

Serve speed down. She hurt.

eib1000

Games over. Oh well

revolversbreath

christ on a bike. emma's been playing so well. can't seem to move freely now.😭 she's still so fragile. she's intelligent and has the talent but her body can't seem to keep up yet.

NoirPochette

Huh Papa Jones is a thing in Seoul. I never saw it when I was there.

Jezza2812

It's entirely possible as many have suggested that it is psychological/psychosomatic rather than a genuine medical issue. But I suppose the other thing to think about is that part of this being the first time she's won three matches in a row since the USO win is that it means this is also pretty much her first time ever playing this many matches on successive days at the professional/adult/WTA level, seeing as her only other long runs as an adult pro were Wimbledon and the USO, both of which being Slams obviously space the matches out more. So if there was going to be a situation in which a seemingly innocuous ache did develop more over a tournament, it would logically be here - and we've already seen over the past year how her body does tend to react poorly to new, unfamiliar stresses.

eib1000

What I don’t get though is she played and won 10 in a row and was fine last September

Jezza2812

But that's my point about Slams vs tournaments like this etc. - playing 10 matches in a tournament over 17 days is a very different physical prospect to playing 4 days in a row. Apart from anything, there was a 4 day break between her final qualifying win on that run, and her match in the 1R proper, so the compound fatigue would have already been severely reduced by the 1R. Sure, if you've got a proper injury like Rafa at Wimbledon this summer, for example, no amount of mid-tournament rest days are going to make it go away in time for the next match. But if you've got a little niggle or ache on day 1, round 1, then the trajectories for how you can manage that ache - or for how it develops and worsens - are markedly different in a tournament with rest days, and one without. Plus, you can really scale that impact of rest vs no rest up to weeks off and weeks on given she competed there on the back of a relatively empty schedule, compared to her packed first full year on tour right now.

SvaPrabho

Her schedule this year is nowhere near packed. She gets knocked out in R1 of every tournament, then takes 2 weeks off before the next tournament.

Jezza2812

For a seasoned pro fully established in their career? Perhaps not. For someone playing their first full year on tour, I'd say 17 tournaments in what, 38 weeks of the year is pretty packed. Getting knocked out early doesn't change the travelling, and weeks off between tournaments is very different to her one and a half year hiatus during exams etc before Jun 21, or the month off she had after winning the USO. None of that's is an excuse for the *quality* of play for much of this year, but physically, I'd say it's pretty accurate to characterise it as a steep curve in terms of acclimatisation.

eib1000

Ok

SvaPrabho

Emma's body language is so poor now. Head's gone down.

kamikashi

I mean Penko got the break back, Penko held serve, and then Emma’s took her MTO before her own serve. Emma’s a set up. Truly think Emma is just fragile. Her body still not used to playing multiple matches in a row rather than day in between rest for matches

eib1000

But it was fine Sep 2021…

kamikashi

Yeah that was slam with day in between matches for rest no?

eib1000

Oh yeah. Quallies were three days in a row though

JohnnyTight1ips

I noticed a couple of concerned looks Emma gave to her box in the first set.

guruv94

Queenwen's got amazing cojones. Her come on a fucking siren telling you to go home. A fitting finale with a similar player that also gives meek interviews after the violence in the court. Samsonova.

Jezza2812

After Katie Swan having to retire from Chennai with the aftereffects of the previous day's heat, and Jack Draper having to retire at the US just as he was starting to fire against Khachanov, I really don't fancy another young Brit losing a big opportunity (obviously relative to the past year Emma has had rather than her USO win) to retirement/injury...

overtired27

That Draper game still hurts.

Jezza2812

Really does - he was really starting to get on top of Khachanov, and then you look at how far Khachanov went in the tournament subsequently... hard to avoid thinking of what might have been!

EffBO94

imagine draper vs krygios? would've been blockbuster haha

eib1000

Yep. How is he now

Hot-Passenger-8396

Sooo either Emma’s super fragile or this MTO is tactical…?

matchalattegurl

Emma always cheating

Chosen1gup

Some players want to be coaches after retirement. Penko wants to be a Hawkeye system.

Consistent-Zebra9564

Raducanu legit has MTO every single match she plays...

eib1000

No

OddsTipsAndPicks

Phenomenal win from Zheng. That match was absolutely phenomenal. Well fought from Kudermetova.

NoirPochette

Love how Penko is just more concerned about how many challenges she and Emma have right now.

d1ngal1ng

Gets broken and then takes an MTO. 🙄

SituationSuch9224

Wonder if this is more of a tactical MTO. Penko had all the momentum

blackb0xes

Alert: Raducanu back MTO

jesterofgoodwill

Emma MTO. FFS.

NoirPochette

Emma MTO.

Jezza2812

Not a good sign with the physio here...

dog_west

She looked like she was trying to stretch out a bit a couple of changeovers ago, was hoping it was just tightness rather than anything but this doesn't look promising.

eib1000

She’s a set up jeez. She’s so fragile

eib1000

Oh ffs Emma.

SvaPrabho

Nooooooo! Emma falls apart under pressure again!

eib1000

Could be psychosomatic

SvaPrabho

I think so too. This is the first time in ages she's had a few games without injury. Just had to keep on keeping on.

EffBO94

that return from Radders to break was exactly what she did to Leylah in the US Open final to break *her* serve trying so hard not to get ahead of myself and jinx it but can't help but feel like Emma's gonna edge it now

escherbach

wtf are you talking about? no one went off court for a medical time-out that game. Emma had a bleeding leg, which had to be strapped

EffBO94

huh? that's not what I was talking about at all, i was talking about Emma breaking Leylah's serve to go 4-2 up in the 2nd set not the MTO that came later, which was obviously legit, still don't get what Leylah was complaining about then lol

eib1000

Spoke too soon

EffBO94

yeah penko broke right back *and* held her serve i jinxed it alright lol

eib1000

Jelana has the momentum atm though

NoirPochette

And Penko red lines it for the break back

eib1000

Damn

revolversbreath

emma is able to absorb all pressure from ostapenko and looks relaxed, she unplayable this way– while the latter seems to have a lot of errors in her. i think she's winning the whole tourney. i'm still bricking it though.

lynxlynxlynxlynx

Lol Zheng immediately threw away the additional challenge.

yangatanga

Aand there goes her only challenge again lol

jannar24

Queenwen and challenges- the most iconic duo

yangatanga

Zheng doesn't seem iced by the MTO, thats some good fortitude.

kashbets

I think it gave her a chnace to catch her breathe cause she completely dominated after that

kashbets

Damn the minute she gets a challenge burns it that quick

Newfoundland1

Kontaviet fired tursunov because he was not traveling with her but he is constantly traveling with Emma? Feel bad for kontaviet

d1ngal1ng

The official reason was because he had trouble getting visas but perhaps there was also some other reason ^^^^^like ^^^^^maybe ^^^^^his ^^^^^nationality.

eib1000

Baltic nations and Russians. Beef

kamikashi

Nah seems like it was Kontaveit just saying that as PR speak. Tursunov said he was fired by both Sabalenka and Kontaveit so he isn’t afraid of being fired by Raducanu

NoirPochette

That is the break

tamsiujun

is anyone able to tell which exact shoe model zheng is wearing?

Metamorphes

Seems like Emma knows how to clip Penko's little white wings 🤔 A very enjoyable spectacle 😀

eib1000

I’d like to cut them off

Metamorphes

🤣🤣

eib1000

What’s she mumbling

shashamaneland

Strategic MTO by Kudermetova.

kashbets

Is there any chance she is actually injured? Or are these all just for rest. I’m genuinely asking as not familiar with this

eib1000

They are beginning to piss me off. The way the women use them

shashamaneland

They should have a point penalty for every minute of a MTO pass the changeover time. Same thing for wardrobe changes and bathroom breaks. Edit: Men do the same garbage. It's not just WTA.

Mediocre-Credit-4170

Yep I saw it too straight away, there’s literally only one game and a tiebreak left

shashamaneland

She does it because it works. Guarantee Zheng gets broken.

Mediocre-Credit-4170

Guarantee you say? We’re at a tiebreak now so ya wrong there I guess

tamsiujun

lol no

EffBO94

what a volley from penko to hold serve damn edit; and Emma too? wow didn't know she could volley like that she usually hits the net lol

eib1000

She’s great at the net. Emma.

Newfoundland1

Will tursunov become a permanent coach for Emma?

Kordas

He already is. It was supposed to be a trial until US Open, after that they made it permanent.

usurp_jiw

He said in an interview that he sat her down and asked about her coaching situation. He told her that she'll gain a reputation and coaches won't want to work with her just to be fired 2 months later. Apparently she told him that she stopped working with the other coaches because she felt they didn't have the right connection. Tursunov seems pretty happy right now, although he did say Emma hasn't shown the level yet to make him stick around for certain.

eib1000

Really? That’s quite bold to say that

eib1000

Hope so

shashamaneland

Zheng ran out of Challenges early yesterday too. She just uses them so haphazardly.

swirkh

Emma making the final ? Can't believe my eyes

usurp_jiw

You had to put it out into the universe didn't you 😭😭😭

swirkh

Yup I see

eib1000

What we say or think makes no difference to the universe. The universe doesn’t give af about us

kashbets

Man if Zheng even has one challenge in that game she might have broken her

OddsTipsAndPicks

Zheng/Kudermetova is **outrageously** high level

eib1000

Is zheng the young up and coming Chinese player.

OddsTipsAndPicks

Yep. Only person to take a set off Iga at the FO.

kamikashi

So hard to pick who will win and then also hard to predict who would win in the final with Samsung

eib1000

Samsung?

kamikashi

Samsonova’s nickname lol

YourAverageLurker7

I love emma’s cross court returns it’s so similarto djokovic return against federer in 2011 us open finals.

eib1000

My guy I too am a stan but let’s not get carried away

YourAverageLurker7

Hahaa my bad. Not trying to say that it’s the same just saying those shots have same vibe :)

aweap

Both the semis going on right now in Japan and Korea are so good and entertaining!

escherbach

my god. Raducanu beating Ostapenko might be bigger than the Laver Cup

eib1000

It’s happening baby. But it’s not bigger

eib1000

Emma is a front runner. When she’s in front she seems to up her game. Bit like iga

tennis2018

Great first set from Emma against Penko. Great to watch

eib1000

Shit is gas

eib1000

Why is this thread titled Friday btw…?

Chosen1gup

There’s tournaments in Asia, Europe, and the US this week so the threads are gonna be off timzezone wise somewhere

Gloomy_Ad_5277

The thread is nearly 24 hours old if you hadn't noticed

eib1000

Right. Why are we all posting on an old one

Gloomy_Ad_5277

Because it's not yet 24 hours old. There's one thread per day. This isn't difficult. In some places in the world it's still Friday

aweap

Laver cup related am assuming

eib1000

CLUTCH

Jezza2812

Get in!

Xenosys83

Well played Emma! Her serve really has won her that first set. Top notch. Penko really is the definition of casino tennis.

SvaPrabho

Oooooooh yeahhhhhhhh babyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LFG!

AlliterateAlso

Nice one Emma.

Gloomy_Ad_5277

Listen, Emma Raducanu might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table. Let her sign it. Let her write whatever numbers she wants to put on there, given what she's done since she's come in. Emma's at the wheel, man. She's doing it. She's doing her thing. Emma Raducanu is BACK

Xenosys83

Hahah, poor Rio.

EffBO94

Rio Ferdinand will never escape this meme lmao

eib1000

I don’t understand this

YourAverageLurker7

Its a football reference to ole.

eib1000

Crowd so reactive. The groans and wows. Haha.

IvanMalison

Has penko like EVER in ANY match tried playing some defense? I've never seen her play serena, for example... Curious what that would look like.

eib1000

I’ve never seen it.

JohnnyTight1ips

Queen Penko is like box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get. -Forrest Gump, probably

AlliterateAlso

Be a good time to nail your first serves.

IvanMalison

Emma has a pretty aesthetically pleasing game and she generally does everything really gracefully, but does anyone else find the way she crouches when she returns serve to look really stiff/weird. She's obviously totally fine at it so its not hurting her... just something I noticed.

eib1000

Yes I know what you mean. But it’s just how she prepares for split shot is all

Jezza2812

Biiiiig service game coming up here for the set then...

eib1000

Wins to love I call Edit. Damn my powers have left

SvaPrabho

Who would have thought Penko would be the one to choke?

Chosen1gup

A lot of people probably. Penko almost lost to the world #688 a couple days ago.

EffBO94

from what i've seen of her Penko tends to DF a lot, but at game point? yeah Emma needs to take that gift and run it with lol

SvaPrabho

I think that was her first DF of the match

EffBO94

first or 2nd i think yeah, i meant in her previous rounds, Penko's actually df ing way less today haha props to her

SvaPrabho

Penko is in form today, and Emma is really taking it to her. Great to see.

eib1000

Her 4th or 5th actually

SvaPrabho

OK. My bad

eib1000

It’s the only shot she chokes on. And is the dodgy part of her game. That serve The motion is fucked up.

SvaPrabho

Emma is playing as well as I've seen her. This is against a very good and difficult opponent. Loving this!

eib1000

Nah she isn’t playing as well as yesterday. BUT Emma is a front runner. So she’ll get better from now

SvaPrabho

You're entitled to your opinion. But Yesterday Emma was playing someone who went into the match injured, and was clearly limping by the end of the first set. Penko is fully fit and in form. Much more impressive to match it with Penko today rather than beat Linette yesterday, in my opinion.

usurp_jiw

Ducking hell Emma's fh is sexy

eib1000

Yeah it’s back. When AWOL for a year

monsieurartois

Penko only needs an apron to complete her cosplay as a maid from Downton Abbey.

SvaPrabho

lol

usurp_jiw

She serves shade instead of Earl Grey

eib1000

Haha

eib1000

Calling an Emma break here EDIT. I NAILED IT!!

usurp_jiw

The scrolls of truth. We've finally found them!

eib1000

Haha. Bro. I’ll do it again later watch

Nastypav12

Too many errors from both Emma and Penkachu; neither one will have any chance versus Alexandrova like this.

eib1000

Tomorrow is another day. Neither are playing their best. Tomorrow they could easily play their best.

Chosen1gup

Raducanu not only matching Penko shot for shot, but matching her prowess at challenging balls too

eib1000

Close so fsr

matchalattegurl

So many bad line calls for penko it’s not fair. 😒

JohnnyTight1ips

Penko is all gas no brakes 😂

eib1000

You ever have that dream where you’re driving and the breaks don’t work? Hate that dream

rubbish_bin030121

original chaos queen

eib1000

Personality matches the game too

eib1000

Emma is winning her service games more comfortably. Penko having to play 3 points more per service game. If Emma keeps that up she should win

eib1000

I think playing Penko there would be the temptation to push it and wait for the errors. It can work against her. But I hope Emma doesn’t do this. But the problem is Penko thrives on pace. So it’s a fine like to tread

SvaPrabho

Serve speed for Raducanu showing as 129km/h. Is that right?

AlliterateAlso

It's been miscalibrated all week.

SvaPrabho

Is it measured by Hawkeye? If it is, how can we trust their line calls?

AlliterateAlso

Well, neither player does, so.

SvaPrabho

I meant, how can we trust Hawkeye's projected linecalls for challenges?

rubbish_bin030121

seoul is the most friendly place to penko, they appreciate her shot a lot!!

Chosen1gup

Penko has had the crowd gasping at her shots all week what a legend

eib1000

Ha they gasp at all winners I’ve noticed

SvaPrabho

Penko is the living embodiment of Wham, Bam, Thank you ma'am. She only knows two speeds - Pedal to the metal, and Balls to the wall.

eib1000

Yep. And she’ll never change

YourAverageLurker7

Woah some amazing hitting from both of them especially penko

IvanMalison

>Woah some amazing hitting from both of them especially penko I mean penko always looks good in the points where she doesn't make an error, but shes still making too many errors atm. Would say she looks pretty much how she always does.

eib1000

Emma not warmed up yet. She will though

EffBO94

Yay Emma breaks back, that cross court bh was nice Surprised Tatjana Maria lost her semi btw, she was my pick to make the final wonder what happened

swirkh

Maria is 35yo, and has played for 3 weeks straight in 3 different timezones (3 matches in Italy, 2 matches in Chennai, 4th match here in SF). I guess there just isn't much more she can do when she faces an opponent who's above certain level.

eib1000

While parenting too

IvanMalison

ostapenko matches can be tough to watch when you're rooting for the other player. Just kinda feels like the point is kinda on her racquet no matter what. You know there are going to be games where she redlines and just wins but also games where she just makes a ton of errors.

Jezza2812

That's more like it!
