Can someone explain the tomic memes to me pls? Was he good before or something? I just saw kygrios' insta story and someone asked if he would play an exhibition with him lol
Sucks that Fritz got sick apparently but at least Jenson is playing well this week. I know the notion most people have is that Jenson really struggled this year, and maybe a bit off expectations but I think it’s been a solid season from him, at 24-18 overall now and should finish top 50, still a young guy with time to improve
Does Nadal have any chances of becoming Year end number 1?
Why did Fritz withdraw from Seoul?
Kwon hasn’t gotten past the second round of a tournament in over a year
Match seems fairly even as of right now, think Brooksby will break him within the next service game or 2 and then run away with it?
Once Kwon went 0/5 on BPs in the first game I felt it was over
Kwon broke Brooksby then proceeds to get throughly dominated at least I can go to bed now
Unfortunate for him he’s close to top ten… gonna be dropping those sf Indian wells points from last fall too soon. Hope he feels better soon
ATP 500 Tokyo weak field not gonna lie.
Astana looks like second week of a GS but Tokyo looks like first week of a GS
Uchida's very sudden and somewhat random improvement over the last year has been interesting to watch
Highlights from today:
Lauren Davis with a gritty third set win over SST on clay; next Mayer Sherif for a semifinal spot!
Kanepi gets it done over Penko; not sure what she said post match in her native language but crowd applauded for a long time.
Ana Bogdan is becoming queen of 250's; I'll favor the winner of her QF with Begu to take Parma title.
She said she hadn't experienced such strong support before here in Estonia. Not that she gets to play often here. She also said new balls gave Ostapenko an edge but as the balls "aged", she got the edge.
Ons to play Raducanu at the 2022 Mubadala World Tennis Champs Exibition
Edit: Who is downvoting me…
What was up with the whole on-court coaching situation w Carlos Alcaraz a few months (maybe a year?) back? Iirc there were quite a few people in this Reddit upset w him or something? Cause I’ve noticed attitudes have really shifted positively towards him in this sub
Just wanted to know, he’s not an asshole or anything, no?
No, he is a good kid. The coaching thing never bothered me, but it was kind of annoying that he got away with it and others did not. That is more on the umpires (maybe the ATP) than on him though.
He just annoys me with all the fist-pumping lol, but he wasn't so bad at the US Open.
I don't think anyone was ever truly upset with him outside of a handful of people, since coaching violations were pretty widespread. On court coaching is currently allowed though, so there isn't much for anyone to complain about with it now.
I've been out of the loop: What exactly happened to Thiem? I'm not saying he should get back to the level from a couple of years ago, but why is he *this* bad?
His injury fucked up his wrist, which he absolutely needed to produce the spin on his shots, especially the forehand. Physically, it's better now, but he lost his confidence in it. It's a mental barrier he is slowly overcoming.
Also, he played a very close match against the world number 16 today, he's not *that* bad.
Yeah, I guess I am asking too much from him... but just two or three years ago he looked like the only guy who can push Djokovic and possibly beat him on hard-courts. And to go from that to this is just a massive drop-off.
Hope he comes back. I would love to see prime Thiem against Alcaraz, this new Medvedev, Sinner, etc. They would be such fun match-ups.

EDIT: yeah, day 6 of crying about all of it, yeahsureyabetcha.
Casper is every guy when someone starts crying to them and they don’t know how to comfort them or what to do lol
Krejcikova vs Haddad Maia in the quarters in Tallinn
Poor Sasho feeling the pressure :( Musetti is taking this third easily unfortunately
Musetti having a good old fashioned choke off with someone ranked below 300
Playing a lot better now, actually being assertive instead of rolling the ball over. Helps when your opponent completely runs out of gas, but it really shouldn't have been this close
This is definitely one of the tie-breaks of all time
Some excellent playing from Krejčíková today, I’m always rooting for her. Hoping to see more from Kostyuk in the future, that was a really fun first set to watch.
The Sofia crowd is loving the Lazarov/Musetti match.
Did they release the list of Wildcards for the Ostravia Open? Going to be pretty cutthroat for those slots
Ah nice is it Ostrava!!! time again?
Next week, yeah
Not a minute too soon, I have a hankering for exuberant, superfluous punctuation
Just realized Nishioka has defeated evans again in Korea, 6-0 H2H now lmao
If you would like to play the [Guess the Tennis Players](https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/xql7ra/guess_the_tennis_players_final_part/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) game, here it is. It’s the last time that I’m doing it so enjoy!
It's depressing that I'm still at a point that whenever Thiem gets broken, I think to myself "Well, that's the set..."
The rightful king Cilic obliterates the usurper Thiem.
Lol this interviewer is talking all over Cilic.
Happy Birthday Marin, not too happy though - cause I saw you at Queens and you played like crap that day!
I am sad but it was a good performance from Domi. Cilic is just so tough, still getting these long matches against great opponents can only help
I really like them both, shame only one could win. Hope Thiem's form continues to improve, and happy birthday Marin!
Man tennis is brutal. Literally two poor points, including a double fault at 30-30 on Thiem’s serve in the 3rd set decided the match.
Sretan rodendan marin! Finally got a win over thiem (obviously not in his greatest form but still....would have been 0-5 if he lost today)
The ancient Mariner strikes again
Lol those kids wishing Cilic a happy birthday in kinda broken english while he's preparing for match point is too good😂
Marin Cilic finally gets his 1st Win over Dominic Thiem
Thiem is one of the most entertaining players of all time
Astana looks stacked compared to Tokyo, wow
Thiem's forehand always betrays him in crucial moments these days.
Yes Babs wins the first set!
Fuck bro why
Is there any way to make these indoor hard court tournaments look a little less depressing?
for real can barely watch tel aviv compared to seoul
More plants or something like that
Kontaveits two fav things. House plants and indoor tournaments
Yeah, how does that look so bright
and kostyuk loses the first set after being up 3-0. she's gotta control her emotions better on the court!
She had break points in 5/6 return games💀
YIKES! saw her play doubles this year at the u.s open with zhang shuai. it was pretty tough to watch & she seemed to just ignore any of shuai's pep talk. lol
Since it happened, I keep rewatching THAT Cilic tiebreak at RG vs Rublev from time to time to energize me lol
God mode Cilic is ridiculous.
Greatest tie break played in history
Do it to em Domi!!!
Brenda Fruhvirtova won her 26th match in a row today. She beat the 2021 Wimbledon junior champion Ane Mintegi del Olmo 6/4 6/2 in W60 San Sebastian. With another win she will enter the top 150 at 15 years old.
Man returning big serves with a one handed backhand is such a nightmare. You either have to have crazy reflexes like Federer, stand in and you can still only block/slice them back, or you need to have crazy strength like Thiem, stand way back and muscle it. As someone who also uses a one hander, it's always such a love/hate relationship with that shot.
Flashbacks to Federer SABRing people
Yeah he’s just deflecting it and it’s amazing. You have to have ridiculously good hand eye
I feel like Domi is going to have to clutch this out in another tiebreak if Cilic doesn't drop his level
That is very very good domi 🇦🇹🇦🇹
Man cilic is so good
Domi need his forehand to be back to his level
That’s an unbelievable hold 🇦🇹 🇦🇹
I mean how do you rip a backhand like that down a break point. Just so tough
Holy shit Dominic
Cilic saw he was playing a fan favorite and said fuck the fans.
Brenda fruhvirtova won her first match on 60K, defeating local wildcard and former wimbledon junior champion Mintegi del Olmo 6-4 6-2, setting her match winstreak to 26 matches in a row.
Dude Kwon beat, Chung Yun-seong, puts a serious beating on the ball. Maybe just needs to lose some weight. But reminded me of Karatsev and Bashiavilli the sheer violence of his groundies.
Oof I just saw that Djokovic won't play Tel Aviv cause Erlich injured himself in practice. Such a shame, poor dude, that was going to be his last tournament wasn't it?
Isn’t he playing Paris?
No, Erlich. He's retiring
That’s just wrong men
Honestly I would like to just see Dominic swing on the forehand. Obviously it’ll miss a lot but I think it’ll be good for him to just let it loose
Not that easy without the confidence…
Thats how you build confidence lol
But without the confidence you’ll just make mistakes and it gets even worse
But if he’s open to making those mistakes and accepts that it may get worse before it gets better I think it could be good. Then again I could be totally wrong, I don’t know what works for him and what doesn’t lol
Thiem just needs to focus on the 3rd, LETS GO DOMI
Hot take: With Roger retired, the prettiest ONB in the world belongs to...Diane Parry. It's just so clean.
Even if Roger came out of retirement the answer is still Gasquet.
This is Lajovic erasure
I’m in the minority but thiems backhand is really pretty, just the way he takes it back, it’s like he’s loading it to unleash the power
Thiem and Stanimal's backhands are so powerful it feels weird calling them pretty lol. Like when they load up on one it's like a sledgehammer coming down. Yea it's still beautiful but it's still a sledgehammer.
Roger is an exception I guess. Dimitrov too but he generally doesn't have that much power in that backhand.
Yeah Federer has really effortless power. Shapovalov hits it ridiculously hard too (but really don’t like him lol)
Dimitrov? Shapovalov? Wawrinka? Musetti?
It's Dan Evans without a doubt
I like his too. It's definitely a bigger weapon. Parry's lacks power but it's nicer looking imo.
Musetti also has a nice looking one.
I'm half-joking because Dan and Fed used to train together, My favorite is probably Musetti or Thiem
Cilic whenever he’s playing my favorite players 😤😤😤😤😤
Thiem needs GOD Mode Cilic to go away if he wants to win this
Cilic never goes God mode when I want him to, yet now I want Thiem to win, Cilic suddenly starts playing amazing tennis haha
People talking like Domi is anywhere near being in form lol
I mean at some point you gotta wonder if that form is there anymore. Yea it takes time and he's had some good wins, but they're off the back of his resiliency and backhand. His forehand is still not anywhere where it was.
Marin cilic piece of shit always shows up just in time against my favorites but whenever I root for him he crawls back into the fucking hole in the ground
It's his birthday. Be nice
Same! Like he’s beaten my fave Rublev at 2 slams this year after going into god mode, then forgets how to play when I want him to 🤦♀️
what a 2nd set from Cilic for know. I'm so sad he cant be that consistently
Dominic is one of the mentally toughest players until it’s time to hold a lead in a new set
Thiems speed is criminally underrated. So is his netplay. Just a really complete player. No matter what happens today this is a really good result and level. Confident in his abilities to return to the top next season
Marin has been hitting some Novak-esque FH returns today
On a side note, Cilic may have one of the best inside-out forehands of all time when he's on
Sinner and him are easily the best in the world at that right now. I can't even think of anyone else who comes close. Their inside out forehands are just thunderous.
I'd put Ruud above both of them. It's his best shot
Carl1tos has a pretty decent inside out FH, just saying.
That backhand is just extraordinary
Besides the two games where they got broken, that was a super high level set of tennis. Best I've seen from Thiem this year.
Cilic better take set 2
Thiem was quite clutch there, so good to see him back. Cilic is not exactly in bad form either.
Very good set between Domi and Cilic, both were a little shaky at times but a really high level TB to finish it off.
Thiem takes the first set with an ace!
I don’t know why people weren’t more excited about Cilic Thiem I was looking forward to this all day lol
Thiem takes the first set!!
Come on Kanepi!
Apparently Mussetti's playing another one-hander from Bulgaria. Someone with a badass name 'Lazarov'. 😱
Grigor reserves his best for his hometown...in Monte Carlo. 😑
Did Korda drop adidas? I saw him wearing Nike the other day
Probably the other way around the way he's been playing..
He’s been wearing Nike since Atlanta
He was wearing Nike yesterday in his match
5-0 lead again on the 3rd set!
Any news on whether Nadal plays ATP finals or not?
On the one hand, between injuries and his wife’s pregnancy it makes a lot of sense he won’t play again this year and is just biding his time for one last Aus Open run; maybe hoping to finally conquer Djokovic at that event.
On the other hand, he’s never won ATP finals so I know it would mean a lot to him to win it finally
I don’t think he’s playing no
Grigor makes me question everything
Wait what happened there? Penko challenged Kanepi's return winner on her serve and they showed Penko's own serve being in?? I thought they would show whether Kanepi's return was in...
Grigor trying to beat some unforced errors record today or what
He's been trying for longer than that.
When you're playing Ostapenko you gotta put the foot in her throat and finish the job by giving her little chance, otherwise she will come back and beat you somehow. Her ability to win matches like these is unbelievable.
I want penko cilic mixed doubles 😍😍😍 My fav hard hitting inconsistent chokers. Both even shuffle their feet the same way on returns
If I was Cilic I wouldn't risk the injury: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRRPRo71sWY
Love this fantastic home support for Kanepi! 🥰
Just got home and Thiem is up 4-2. Sweet. Thiem playing well or Cilic playing badly?
Cilic had an absolute stinker of a game and Thiem capitalized. Not confident in either of them winning this set atm
I'm pretty confident that one of them will do it.
The question is which one? They've been really up and down so far, Cilic plays a bad game then fires off 4 aces in the next one. Thiem hits some great BHs, then misses a bunch of them to give the break away
Cilic clearly saw our Reddit thread and got confused about who was supposed to defy what and now he’s losing.
Kanepi will still choke this set somehow. She's a master at it.
Really? Penko plans to come back 0-5 and tries to win the match with 7-5?
I think the MTO was just so she could rest, and Kanepi doesn't even look tired.
20 mins for the first 4 games in Thiem-Cilic. The Austrian's been taking the long route in a lot of these comeback matches, and it's not always worked for him(especially in the subsequent match up).
People who complain about Rafa not getting Time Violations have never seen Cilic serve
Don’t most people hate Cilic’s serve routine
My point is more that both of them are very good at serving with less than 5 seconds remaining and complaining about how they don't get reprimanded enough is useless.
But yes, Cilic's serve motion, especially the foot movement, is one of the weirdest in the sport
Oh lol I completely misread your first comment
Kanepi is so impressive, 37yo and out there playing big time tennis with these kids. Looks like she could play as long as she wants.
Yeah, she's in better shape than some of the younger players. If she stays that way and avoids injuries, then it should work out for her. And she doesn't really have any pressure... she just enjoys the game.
How do you get broken after being up 40-0? Ask Penko.
Wake up Grisho
Man seeing the trajectory of Domi’s career is sad
Now that big Fed is gone it's time for baby Fed to take over the throne and win the prophesied Calendar Slam.
*Sees Dimitrov behind 3-6 1-1 against Ivashka*
It's a bit late for Gasquet to win the calendar slam.
Ivashka is playing really well actually, self-destruction has not been initiated by Grigor (yet)
17th Vs 32nd in the world is a crazy first round tie for a small tournament like this btw
Jelenaaaaaa come on, we need another Penko title
Penko challenges successfully in an important point, it is harder than she comes back from 2-5
Man killer backhands from JO
Is the Theim Cilic match going to start earlier? Edit yes it is
I feel very sorry for the balls in Kanepi-Ostapenko match. They are being shredded.
Wonder how the Djokovic Wrist is feeling after Laver Cup. Hopefully he's not pushing himself too much for Tel Aviv.
He'll still make the ATP finals later, no need risking long term stuff here.
He said in his press conference yesterday that it feels completely healed
Listen there is a certain section of tennis fans (sports betters and old assholes) who i would say 90% of racism in tennis is from. But the amount of young stef fans who i have seen some horrible racism from in the past few days is shocking to me. No the reverse of “Greek Yogurt” isn’t “dark chocolate”, or variations of that (I have even someone say the reverse would be monkey…a term absolutely LOADED with racist history) when in reality it would be like cheeseburger or hot dog or something(and ngl i would find those two nicknames funny as an American myself). This whole thing has become so overblown and thats not even getting into the idiots calling “Greek Yogurt” homophobic
1. Absolutely Greek yoghurt is not the equivalent of monkey ffs, or dark chocolate. That is ridiculous. 2. Americans always assume all other cultures have a perfect grasp of the racial mess you made. You are not the center of the world. 3. I believe you are the one blowing these ignorant responses out of proportion. 4. If you read all that on Twitter, leave, Twitter is a dark place.
I don’t assume that but I think monkey as a racist term is known by now. Yes it was on twitter but no I am not blowing it out of proportion if you look up greek yogurt you will see hundreds of tweets saying that the reverse of greek yogurt is these racist terms
I thought you meant in this sub. I don't doubt that plenty racists took this as an opportunity to spit vitriol and call reverse racism.
What’s up with Nole / Erlich — any news on why they withdrew?
I think Erlich got injured in practice
That sucks :(
Is tennis tv not showing Nole’s doubles? Aww nvm it’s not happening
Just turned on the match and Kanepi and Ostapenko are trying to win the award for ugliest dress, just look at them
