Fun fact: you could get the Astana first round tickets for as low as 4 USD. Imagine going to see Djokovic live for 4 quid!
So Cilic and Djokovic took the same plane from Tel Aviv to Astana?😂
They said yesterday it was Djokovic’s private jet
Seeing that Astana draw and I’m laughing at the fact we’re getting yet another Rublev vs Djere matchup, heck it’s been just over a month since they last played each other, in fact!
I love how stacked the stadiums are for the first rounds in Astana!
Botic gets the win on his birthday!
Casual tennis fan here: I'm guessing most of the top players chose Astana since it was closer?
Pretty cool Nakashima gets to play in his ancestral homeland. Hopefully when playing a non Japanese he gets more support
Crazy possible quarters in Astana.. only superstars. feels like Us Open
I’m watching the Nakashima match right now is this the right thread lol I’m confused with the time difference.
It's the right thread, though I am going to summon u/fingerdumbed or u/jsnoodles to work on figuring out when to change the thread with the timings this week
Edit: It looks like 4 or 5 PM PST would be a good time to switch threads. All the matches in Tunisia and Ostrava should be done at that point, and day 2 for Tokyo would start around 7 PM PST
It’s tricky atm because there’s tournaments all over. There’s a new thread every 24 hours though.
The kid who just walked into the court with Popyrin is literally 2 ft tall. She should be in that Netflix toddler show. So cute.
Tokyo gets underway in just under a half hour
I just saw Tennys is playing Qualies. At a Challenger! WTF. This is a man who had seven match points to make the Semis of the AO
Ho does not take vaccine
And lost that qualies lol.
Karma for what?
Why did Krej celebrate more when she won Tallinn slam than when she won RG? 😭
As she should. Tallinn slam>> RG 😌
Prolly after the injuries + covid the krej kween felt extra good bout making it baxk
Katya too when she won Slovenia
That was her 1st singles title in 5 years.
In Singles. She won 3/4 Grand Slams in Doubles on the year
Yeah but this is an individual achievement that hasn't happened too many times over her career. In Doubles she's been world no.1 multiple times totalling over 60+ weeks. Has won 6 grandslams completing a career slam. Winning a doubles slam is no doubt special (especially with one of her best friends) but it has happened far more times than anything she's done in Singles.
Crazy how stacked Astana is vs. Tokyo. Could feel like a 1000 based on how the early rounds go
They should've made one of them a 1000 since Shanghai isn't happening.
I'm betting Astana is offering huge appearance fees - Kazakhstan likes to dump money into tennis.
They made Guadalajara a 1000 because of the loss of Shanghai.
Yup, WTA did it right - I was talking about ATP.
Was Beijing for the women
It is one of those moments where you see the flaws in the ranking system
Edit- let’s take a look at both the number 1 seeds path to the title
Ruud: Munar-Popyrin/Martinez-De Minaur-Tiafoe-Fritz/Kyrgios/Shapo/Coric
"Tennis" Channel now has beach volleyball on. You can't make this shit up.
Better than gherkinball
Hüsler is the only lefty from among the 12 men who've won their maiden singles titles this year. On the women's side 3 (Martina Trevisan, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Bernada Pera) of the 7 players who've won their first title this year are lefty.
Why does Navratilova need to bad mouth djokovic all the time? Lmao. Djokovic is such a champion that he doesn’t even need to care
What did she say?
Throwing a fit on Twitter after djokovic said he and Nadal played the most matches out of any rivalry in tennis. Djokovic obviously meant mens tennis
Link? Too much going on on her Twitter for me to find it lol
You made it sound like she had numerous posts and tweets about him when all she has is a 4 word tweet in response to Chrissie’s reply. She’s supporting Chris, her long time rival. I agree that Djokovic was talking about men’s tennis but I don’t see how this counts as Martina (or Chris) hating on Djokovic or in your words “throwing a fit.”
She’s generally bad mouthed djokovic and had an agenda against him, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something against him. She said the best thing for djokovic during the Australia debacle would be to go home. This was right after his first court case went his way
Unless Tsitsipas wins a title in the next month and a half, Novak will be the only ATP singles player to have won titles on all 3 surfaces this year
His counterpart on the WTA side this year would be Caroline Garcia who's also won on all 3 surfaces.
Thanks for that! Was wondering if a women had done the feat this year but hadn’t gotten around to checking
My feed is not coming back. Oy vey! How will the world know that Novak Djokovic loves the Lord?
The Lord giveth the feed, and the Lord taketh the feed
The feed controller said there is actually no god... deadass!
*cuts the feed*
tel aviv decided that the speech can only be heard by the players, the audience present there and the lord only
Bizarre ceremony with russian speaking guy and lost TV signal during Marin speech. I hope YT will deliver Novak speech somehow.
>I hope YT will deliver Novak speech somehow.
Tel Aviv presenter says have faith.
Feel like the only right thing to do right now is blast Unholy by Sam Smith & Kim Petras
I guess the feed isn't coming back in time for the speeches.
In couple of years knowledge about the Lord blessings in Tel Aviv would be how we recognize true r/tennis member
Why do mods keep deleting Djokovic post-match thread?
We‘re not. Glitch on Reddit’s end IIUC.
Hm. My bad then.
Ah too bad my feed cut away from the ceremony. I wanted to see Djokovic's bar mitzvah!
Maybe they wanted a private blessing from the lord
Djokovic In his last 21 competitive matches is 20-1 and the sole loss is Nadal at RG.
Auger aliassime at laver cup?
ATP: Hey, Tel Aviv, you will host a 250 this year. Good luck
Tel Aviv: They said we are hosting the only major of the year. That and also Lord is watching us
Both tennis tv and tennis channel lost the feed
I love the different cultures of tennis tournament cities. Tennis as a global sport is fascinating.
Barcelona ceremony with the Freddie Mercury Opera
I liked the Dubai one where we watched the drawing for a car
What the actual fuck is this closing ceremony at the tel aviv open lol
Such a strange ceremony lol
I need to stop drinking during finals these random ceremony speeches have me laughing over the silliest things every time
Is this a tennis trophy ceremony or a mess at church?
Is this an award ceremony or a sermon…
Glad I wasn't paying attention and missed it.
I’m taking a sip every time they mention “the lord”
Yeah am I missing something… presenter keeps praising their faith. (What would they say if one of the finalists was atheist 🤷)
No haha I thought it was bizarre
Why is this guy speaking Russian???
LMAO what I was thinking, I was like am I crazy?
if novak gets lucky in astana, he can play against marin again
Cilic is now 2-19 against Djokovic....
Lol the president of the Tel Aviv open looks a lot like Srdjan Djokovic from some angles
Idemooo!!! Yes Novak!
novak should play more 250s
Djokovic’s little smirk waiting for his trophy… He‘s just so happy to be back playing the game.
Nice win! One title from 90.
Nice win Novak!
Djoko the boob throw minimalist
So what does Djokovic have to do to make Turin? Or is he automatically in as a top 20 race participant?
He is automatically in as long as he remains in the top 20
Medvedev type celebration
This tournament was way too easy for Djoko.
He got to tie break the match before
Easy but not too easy
Probably just to get some extra practice
Holy shit. Painting lines
Come on Nole!!
Throwback when djokovic recommended a tantric sex book for cilic 🤣 https://twitter.com/henrybreadstick/status/1576403126088716288?s=20&t=3ylGn-o9kAkSAjLn1kiFVw
Of course Djokovic has even found some psuedoscience for his sex life lol
Well, Marin has had 2 children since this comment... coincidence? 😜
Best thing I’ve seen all day lmao
WHAT A SHOT
I don’t think the story of Djokovic gets talked about enough in the general world of sports. The way he completely revamped his lifestyle, diet, and game to disrupt a 2-man sport and remain dominant into his late 30s is really an incredible feat.
Thought most know how Novak completely improved his fitness (early in his career he was prone to retirements due to physical issues).
True, but 35 is not late 30s, more of a mid 30s.
I’m assuming he maintains level for a few more years
It’s because the gluten thing makes him look crazy rather than being an inspiring story lol
It gets talked about all the time
Novak ability to serve very well when he is under pressure is underrated
It took me a decade to trust him. I trust him now that he’s after his peak and is no longer that consistent l 😞
Djokovic’s chest hair on that break point….HOT
I love JM Cerundolo so much. His game is just clay bs at its finest
Will never forget that Cordoba run :)
Oh shit he’s going god mode
dude this is not fair
I love 40-0 yolo backhands.
love this man much more than I should
Novak is on fire rn hope he can keep this up!!
One day I will find a girl who returns my text messages like Novak Djokovic returns serve
At 85 mph at your feet?
In .6 seconds with pinpoint accuracy
No way Novak made that return that deep to break, it still surprises me after all these years how well he returns.
I always find it funny that some people unironically think Agassi or Murray have better returns.
Even though I think Novak has the better return, I won’t quibble with the Agassi peeps. But Murray? Those people are just on crack.
If Nole holds true to form for this tournament, he should win the second set 7-5 or 7-6.
Two clutch first serves! Idemo!!
That baby blue remains great on Nole.
And he looks great on that purty court
Come on Nole!
Cilic not playing well is one of the most ugly things in tennis.
Why is Cilic wearing russian flag shirt?
If it's supposed to represent a flag it's probably the [Croatian flag](https://cdn.britannica.com/06/6206-004-14730C28/Flag-Croatia.jpg)
If it's supposed to be croatian flag then why is it white-blue-red and not red-white-blue? If it was crotian flag it would be red-white-blue
Not every red blue white combo has to represent Russia.
n fact, most don't. There are tons of countries with those three colors even if we just limit it to flags.
I normally don’t like Djokovic’s kits, but he’s looked good this tournament in the baby blue
His kits have always been really mid. Until last year at the US Open. Since then they’ve all been really nice
Huh, I thought his LaCoste kits have been pretty universally liked.
I make absolutely no claims to represent the majority. Indeed, I think his LaCoste kits are the best of all his apparel sponsors. I just tend to not like his big tournament stuff as much (Clay season generally excluded)
Yeah, totally understood. You're entitled to your opinion, it was just a surprise to me :)
That’s kind of an unpopular opinion to me also. Or I thought at least.
What is happening with the double faults?
Pressure of Djokovic's second serve return.
Čilić’s general fidgetiness is so adorable.
Pretty good lesson to watch Novak play vs Cilic, see how often he goes to Cilic's forehand even with how big it is, because it's much more inconsistent than his backhand. And before someone says this is obvious, think of how many times in a match you've avoided your opponent's forehand because it was so big and didn't want him to make a winner past you even though in average it breds a lot of errors, it's easy to realize it watching players on TV but not as much in a real match you play.
I also think Djokovic sometimes goes for his opponents' stronger side to show them he can beat them there and mentally break them. Usually when he's really feeling it though.
But that's the misconception, Cilic's forehand is not his stronger side, it's bigger, yes, but in average it gets more errors than winners. Fans and players tend to confuse or well, rather than confuse, misjudge flashy winners as the norm when most times they miss, the classic "X forehand is one of the best, he only needs to be a bit more consistent" it will never be more consistent, that's how it is.
I understand you, I was just making a semi-related comment :).
Oh okay, my bad
If Novak wins Tel Aviv, it will be his sixth season winning a title on all 3 surfaces (2011, 2014, 2015, 2019, 2021 are the others.)
For reference, Federer has achieved the feat 8 times, Nadal twice, and Murray twice.
TBF, Djokovic not playing anything but Wimbledon on grass most years has limited his ability to do that. He could have definitely won some 250s/500s on the surface if he had played them throughout his career. (He's only played 6 total, compared to 25 by Fed and even 9 by Nadal).
Who would have thought we'd be waiting for an October match for Novak to potentially win his first hard court title of the year.
Djokovic and Cilic have played 20 times before.
Djokovic won 9 of them 2 sets to 0.
Djokovic won 3 of them 3 sets to 0.
Djokovic won 3 of them 2 sets to 1.
Djokovic won 2 of them 3 sets to 1.
Djokovic won 1 of them 3 sets to 2.
Cilic won 1 of them 2 sets to 1.
Cilic won 1 of them 2 sets to 0.
Yesterday Djokovic won the first set before I finished breakfast. Today, I'll finish my breakfast before the first changeover...
Marin Cilic, 6' 6", owns as many Grand Slam singles titles as Daniil Medvedev, 6' 6".
As many as del po, 6'6". More than zverev, 6'6".
Fun fact: the day Djoko’s hairline starts to recede will be the end of his career
>the end of the world
The heatdeath of the universe actually refers to the warmth created by Djoko’s hair leaving thus signaling to the Gods to create another universe, destroying our’s in the process
New GOAT ranking method: Can they prevent the inevitable entropy of the universe?
Isn’t it the inevitable lack of entropy? We run out of work and thus entropy stops or some bullshit like that?
Nah, entropy is a measurement of that lack of availability of work. Total entropy is the universe entering an unordered soup state basically.
Nice to see some packed crowds this week at Tallinn, Tel Aviv, and Seoul. Promising
Yeah, Sofia was weirdly empty.
Can't wait for Hüsler to win 20 Grand Slam titles and fail to convert match point at 8-7 40-15 against Kecmanovic at Wimbledon 2034
Next time someone on the sub says "Challenger level" it'll have a new meaning!
Huesler, well known on the minor circuit, wins Sofia beating PCB, Musetti and Rune.
Nishioka, played mostly US Challengers beginning of year, takes Seoul over Shapo, Ruud and Evans.
Sherif, winner in May on clay at 125 Karlsruhe, triumphs over Sakkari in Parma; beat Bogdan and Bondar en route.
And that semifinal match against kovacevic a lucky loser was his toughest match.
Challenger players aren’t really different from top players. Everyone in the top ~250 is an ostensible God; margins are very slim at the top
Huesler: "Look at me, I am the Federer now"
Rune and Huesler very respectfully ending right before Djoker - Cilic.
Nishioka and Huesler with ATP titles this week! Great to see\~
Love it when these lower ranked players win these kinda tournaments and get much needed boosts in their rankings. Hopefully he can continue upwards from here.
Reminds you how big of a deal it is to win any ATP title.
dude said he didn't think he'd ever win a title! hopefully this gives him a confidence boost, must be nice after playing for so many years to finally get a trophy
Marc-Andrea Hüsler is the new Sofia Open champion!
Guys like Huesler work so hard day in day out. It’s gotta feel amazing to get that first career title.
A rough defeat for the future #1 player in the world (according to himself)
