Steve Johnson’s a winner

aazip13

So it is 6-3 4-3 in favor of Shapovalov and Steve Johnson has literally only won one single point on Shapovalovs service games. That is insane.

PlayboiCartiBallsak6

Marc Andrea Huesler welcome to the shadow realm

PlayboiCartiBallsak6

Ruusuvuori GOAT AUUUUUGGGHHGHHHHHHH

Complex_Rhubarb_3411

Steve johnson’s a loser

PlayboiCartiBallsak6

That’s not very nice

Complex_Rhubarb_3411

Sorry I meant to say Steve Johnson’s a winner

poopoojoefocker

One win in his last 8 matches, Otte is playing amazing today…???

shegotofftheplane

Last week’s finalists struggling. Nishioka, Huesler, Cilic, Shapo is always a toss up

goforth1457

Double bagel?

orangedgoat

Huesler getting embarrassed but he’ll always have just one more title then Emil

PlayboiCartiBallsak6

Huesler never had a chance against the Finnish Sorcerer

gothgirl91

what's finnish for bagel because emil just served one

iconisanimi

Rinkeli-Ruusuvuori

PlayboiCartiBallsak6

Emil Ruusuvuori is balling out and there is absolutely nobody in the crowd or this Reddit thread to witness it

PlayboiCartiBallsak6

The Finnish Warlock is about to turn up

Blovering_Skill

Great win for Miomir! I feel he hasn't really done that much since Miami..

PlayboiCartiBallsak6

The Kec comeback starts now

shegotofftheplane

Great win from Misha after a bad start, Dan Evans can sigh in relief

jsnoodles

If anyone needs a player to be jinxed I’m your girl!

Psychological_Bug676

Please jinx Kyrgios so that he never wins another match

Chosen1gup

Well, at least Nishioka will keep his unbeaten record against Evans

LeonBelmont1

Nishioka has officially imploded both physically and mentally

goforth1457

Casual tennis fan here: is the umpire checking to see if the line judge made the correct call when they put their hand up after a call is made?

ExcuseYou-What

If the hand is out and it's flat, that means they agree that the ball is in. If their index finger is up, that means they think the ball is out (whether it is in agreement with the line judge or not). They don't always do this; the line judges tend to do most of the speaking and motioning, and the umpire's gesturing is usually done only after close calls.

goforth1457

Ah that's interesting, thanks for the write-up! Yeah, I've been seeing the umpires do this quite often watching the Japan Open, though most of the time in agreement with the line judge; I'm assuming in those scenarios it's more of a gesture of backing the judge's call?

ExcuseYou-What

Yep, it's usually done as a means to back the line judge if the umpire agrees with them, because the players only have 3 challenges they can use, so if the player looks at the umpire and they make a certain gesture, then they'll feel like, "hmm maybe it wasn't really in/out". It's another means of the umpire making sure they stamp their authority over a match so as to maintain order (I'm kind of paraphrasing how umpires have described their line of work).

goforth1457

Thank you for all the info! It's been really helpful!

Psychological_Bug676

That’s two stress free Andrey matches in a row 😭

shegotofftheplane

The stress will start next round 🙃

Psychological_Bug676

He’s playing Cilic/Otte right?

naffion

No, Goffin or Mannarino. He lost to Mannarino in Russia last year.

shegotofftheplane

Goffin/Mannarino. Better than Alcaraz but Goffin is on fire and Mannarino is always tricky (and beat Rublev last time they played).

Psychological_Bug676

Oh noo. I pray for anyone who has to play Mannarino. That man is a menace 😭

NuuuDaBeast

Nishioka just fatigued I think rip

goforth1457

Wow, Nishioka dropping off like a cliff.

Lazy_Left_Eye

Hope Bweh ends the year on a high with a title or two.

DanaiDampa

QF for Bweh! 🤩

gothgirl91

Andrey's match finishing in 58 minutes...

PrincessGwenllian

Game, set and match Rublev in under an hour! One of his strongest performances all year. Great ball striking, excellent serving, very very pleased!

goforth1457

Crowd in Japan the only large crowd that the umpires don't need to tell to be quiet.

queenofhades

Andrey’s match might be over in less than an hour

PrincessGwenllian

Double break for Bweh! He'll serve it out!

ExcuseYou-What

That tiebreak had the best series of points that I've seen Misha play, maybe almost ever. What a thrill.

t3sterbester

Think nishioka is a bit injured, body language is off like it was when he retired in vancouver

lostinmoss

If anything, it's probably fatigue. Winning a tournament and then immediately playing another is pretty hard on the body.

orangedgoat

What a point for kecmanovic

Sad_Consideration_49

random fact - cilic has played alcaraz as many times as he has played monfils.... crazy two successful players from the same generation with longevity have only played 4 times (all of which monfils won)

PrincessGwenllian

Early break in the second for Bweh! Playing some bwehtiful stuff! I'll get my coat.....

shegotofftheplane

Kecmanovic isn’t even playing badly, Nishioka is just winning all the rallies with his gritty grinding

lostinmoss

Think he also just matches up poorly with Nishioka. His shots just lack the depth and placement to really do damage against a skilled defender, despite being hit decently hard. He also tends to play with a lot of margin on defense, which let's Nishioka open up angles and close at the net too easily Edit: He's getting more aggressive now, which is good.

PrincessGwenllian

Total mess in Astana! Andrey serving for the set, two challenges and the system is not working properly, delayed him for about two minutes. Went to 15-40 with two break points to Zhang, went to 30-40 before Andrey hit (what looked like) a forehand that just went wide, he challenged but had already got to his chair and was about to smash his racket when the challenge showed the ball in my barely a mm. Gets up and ends up serving it out to take the first set!

Incidenceincident

the system broke during andrey's last match too lol

PrincessGwenllian

It's shocked at his beauty.

iconisanimi

This is the only possible explanation.

PrincessGwenllian

iconisanimi

Ohhhhh. ❤️

Southern-Panda911

yep, understandable, I’d malfunction too

DanaiDampa

That last service game from Andrey was the weirdest clownery I've ever seen lmaooo

shegotofftheplane

Wow what a good challenge from Rublev on break point, nobody was expecting his shot to be in

shegotofftheplane

Ugh ball abuse from Andrey, so much for changing

LottaMalou

Changes are work in process, of course there still would be some moments like before...

ALifeAsAGhost

That was hilarious that he’d actually won the point after all that though haha

goforth1457

Why is the crowd so small in Astana?

PrincessGwenllian

Blistering start from Bweh!

bloobidybloop

i feel like when i'm watching matches on tennistv there's only commentary once the matches have finished and are uploaded (not during live watching) ... is that how it always is?

PrincessGwenllian

Tennis TV has been almost unwatchable for me recently as it keeps buffering/I need to reload all the time (not internet issue). I know they don't get all the tournaments but I find Amazon coverage much, much better. If you have Prime, personally I'd recommend watching on there.

bloobidybloop

oh i didn't know they did tennis streaming! can you watch matches later?

PrincessGwenllian

Yes you can!

PrincessGwenllian

Early break for Andrey davai! PS Amazon comms are already pissing me off laughing about him punching his racquet (not in this match but when he's done it before).

gothgirl91

the tennistv comms were talking about it but they were discussing about how he's been honest about it and how it's a work in progress.

PrincessGwenllian

Well that's good to hear!

DanaiDampa

Plz I stopped watching streams with commies a long time ago, they simply never have something nice to say about Andrey 😑

PrincessGwenllian

It's not even funny. They basically said 'Oh you can't come out and tell us everything is fine with you mentally and then punch your racquet!' and then laughed. Like, dudes, his mental health and what he is going through is not a funny thing. He's actually been VERY open about it recently but evidently they haven't read a thing he has said.

Ramiah73

I thought Nishioka might be tired after his amazing run last week but nah he wants that Evans blood in the next round

PrincessGwenllian

40-0 hold of serve! I knew you could do it Andrey!

ALifeAsAGhost

He did in his first round match too :)

PrincessGwenllian

\*Prayer circle for Andrey started\* Amen.

hollowichig0

holy shit, nishioka is fucken amazing

PrincessGwenllian

Oh God Andrey's serving first. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

shegotofftheplane

I’m exhausted just watching Nishioka-Kecmanovic, Shapo was right: Yoshi is super annoying to play

WaeIreh

Never expected to hear CLC’s “Helicopter” at a tennis match.

[deleted]

These guys are serving so well one mini break might do it.

Cap10Haddock

When will we have rules so both players are not allowed to wear the same color? After a whole days work this extra mental computation is pretty irritating.

[deleted]

You don't even have to coordinate it beforehand. Just make it a rule that each player has to bring two separate tops of contrasting color. Simple. One changes into the 2nd top if both come in wearing the same color.

Cap10Haddock

Yup. Maybe make it part of the toss who chooses first.

ExcuseYou-What

Kwon is such an exciting player to watch (Mackie, too, honestly). Their returns, foot speed, all-court game are just crazy. It sucks how inconsistent they are so that we don't see them more often.

[deleted]

Yellow cap, yellow shirt, black shorts for both Kwon and McDonald lol. At least one person's decided to watch this as their first tennis match ever and by now has said fuck this and never going to watch tennis again.

Chosen1gup

This is the second time this year McDonald called for a double bounce when he actually got to the ball… Kwon agreed to replay the point thankfully

Chosen1gup

Kwon has lost 14 second round matches in a row. Is today finally the day?

JetsLag

Oh great, Kwon and McDonald are both wearing yellow shirts and dark shorts At least their hats are different, I guess

Psychological_Bug676

https://www.atptour.com/en/news/rublev-astana-2022-feature This Andrey interview made me really happy. I am so proud of him 🥺

AncientLyte

Why do rublev fans use that emoji a lot when talking about him? He’s not a baby.. he’s almost 25 years old…

Psychological_Bug676

Why do you care? Mind your own damn business 🙄

jsnoodles

Fuck this cracked me up.

AncientLyte

Idk, it’s weird that his fans treat him like he’s 10 just cause he gets mad

Psychological_Bug676

We’ll treat him however the way we want to treat him. Worry about your politics and vaccine mandates instead

AncientLyte

Yeah, I will worry about the things that are trying to stop Novak. Unfair how people can't make choices about their own bodies and that Novak was not able to get his 2000 points for winning Wimbledon.

[deleted]

>Unfair how people can't make choices about their own bodies Wait WTF did the government force Novak to get vaccinated??? When did that happen?

Psychological_Bug676

Stick to your nonsense so that I can keep 🥺ing Andrey Rublev in peace

misshighsmith

Felt the same! He finally addressed USOpen and seems to have a better mentality on his evolution! Well done, Andrey!

[deleted]

The_Entheogenist

Is this a joke? Oradini has never beaten a player ranked higher than 200. Kozlov is ranked 130. Oradini didn't have to throw the match to lose. He's just the inferior player. You must have lost money.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nastypav12

Very funny; I follow Challengers and Kozlov won three titles in 2021 and podcasts that follow the circuit had entire shows on Stefan (also Griekspoor and Stricker).

jsnoodles

Stef has less than 200 points to defend for the rest of the year. Carlos a bit over 300. I mean Rafa has 0 but I think he might have gone to a farm upstate for the rest of the year.

Blovering_Skill

ever since the atp finals win i feel Stef has kinda been ehhhhh on indoor hardcourt

jsnoodles

Yeah but he won that after playing Laver cup with Fedal in 2019. After a period of relative disappointment after his ao semi final. Hmm 🧐

AncientLyte

Man, I wish politics and vax mandates didn’t ruin the season, but of course they got in the way

[deleted]

aweap

>15-40, cucked it at the net It was literally a forced error, struggling to get the ball over the net. >30-40, lapse in concetration and she hits the shot short for an easy putaway She had no other choice. Bencic hit the ball with a lot of force down the middle. Did you even see how high the ball went when Bouchard (who was clearly hoping for Bencic to hit wide) hit back at her? It became an easy putaway because of the way Bencic hit the ball.

lostinmoss

Or the tours could come together to make sure that the professional players can actually make a livable wage? Like, match fixing sucks ass, but it's born out of a real struggle at lower levels. Just purging them doesn't solve the root issue.

White_Nothing

Great match. If Bouchard can play this well after so few matches since her return, I really think she can be a top player again. Hopefully she will continue to progress and improve.

hojbjerfc

Glad to see Genie back playing competitive tennis tho. Love her or hate her she is incredibly well known among casuals

hojbjerfc

Thank Fuck Beli that was wayyyy too close

aweap

Man! That final game was so good! Good job Bencic and great going Bouchard! What a fun match!

[deleted]

[удалено]

aweap

What easy points?

Bubbly-Ordinary-1097

Shut up idiot..she’s been playing since one month

triplejayye

Bencic is actually kinda annoying on court

aweap

She's misunderstood, that's all. https://twitter.com/Svitoflopina/status/1577399324308344866

triplejayye

You can be nice to fans but still be a poor sport on the court. It’s not mutually exclusive

aweap

Poor sport why? Coz she screams at her coaches? That's just her way of coping with stress. Her team understands this very well. I've never seen her show attitude towards opponents, ball kids, umpires or anyone else. She doesn't shout or scream during points either.

thelastattemptsname

You can see the reaction when shots go wrong or opponents hit an unbelievable shot. Penko is on a whole different level but Bencic doesn't come across as humble or appreciative of her opponents.

[deleted]

Not just kinda. It's not even her throwing her racquet around. She gets pissy when her opponent hits great winners like she's entittled to points. It's obnoxious to watch.

HTMListerine

Controversial opinion: Drip by Shapo is a bit of a banger. And Moutet's verse is fire

shegotofftheplane

Moutet’s parts are good only cuz I can’t understand the lyrics. But anything beats Shapo’s “talk so much shit, they forgot how to pee” 😬

Rich_Strawberry_795

I just used the last of my mobile data downloading it

BreizhDre

Such a banger it makes me want to bang my head against a wall

TheRampart

Impressed by how quickly Bouchards form is improving considering she'd been out for more than a year and only been back for a month. If she can stay healthy she'll establish herself in the top 100 and qualify for more events very soon

aweap

She might lose but this is just the Bouchard of old days...fighting tough and hard for every point. Just look at the depth of those groundstrokes! Certainly playing at top 50 level now against a very formidable Bencic! 😍

Nastypav12

Let's go [email protected]$! Summon that muscle memory of big wins and late stages of slams.

GamamJ44

Bencic smashing her racquet all the time is so frustrating

Pisces_Mermaid

Wonder if Bouchard is getting fatigued? Not nearly as much depth on her groundstrokes & she hasnt played anyone at Bencic’s level in quite some time so a drop off was to be expected. She also hasn’t played that many matches this year and the 1st set was quite lengthy for anyone’s standards

[deleted]

She definitely looks more tired.

hojbjerfc

Come on beli lets not like lose to FAR inferior opponents

[deleted]

Yea that's Medvedev's job.

Bubbly-Ordinary-1097

You know what Bouchard has done that Bencic hasn’t..made it to a GS final

hojbjerfc

Cool. Beli is a far better player right now tho

Bubbly-Ordinary-1097

True ..props to Bouchard for trying a comeback

hojbjerfc

It’s nothing even against Genie I like genie but Beli needs to stop losing to worse players

Sad_Consideration_49

Dream scenario is genie beating petra in the semis and iga in the finals 😍

AlliterateAlso

Kader Nouni grooving along to Cosmic Girl.

AlliterateAlso

Strong response from Bencic, breaks Bouchard from 40-0.

[deleted]

Genie’s been playing pretty great lately! I always root for her because she’s been so unnecessarily bullied online for years now. God forbid she has a life outside of tennis. And the part-time tennis player critique never made sense to me. You can see the last few years when not injured she’s putting in work in 250s and Challengers trying to regain form. Even if she didn’t try and only played part-time who gives af lol

mfxc

Same! That’s why I support her. She doesn’t deserve all the hate she gets. Plus she’s really great with fans.

Bubbly-Ordinary-1097

Yeah ..I hear ya ..bitter jealous people

aweap

Damn! That was a really high-quality set of tennis from both Bencic and vintage Genie! 🥺

browwnairbrowwneyes

breaking news: genie bouchard won the first set off bencic, 7-6. wowzers!!!

[deleted]

Wow Genie

lefthill

Wow Bouchard digging in there to get the set over Bel

browwnairbrowwneyes

looking like 2014 genie all over again!!

JixieZ

Lets go Genie!

GamamJ44

Wow, amazed by Genie#s level. I last saw her at Wimby 2014 and have only heard her shat on since then. Lovely aggressive game.

Wynnrose

Does Alcarez have points to defend rest of year

ALifeAsAGhost

Vienna SF, Paris R16

arknight12

Genie lowkey serving better than pre surgery. Regardless if she wins today or not, very happy to see her play at a high level again

[deleted]

Genie is staying with a top 20 player. Emma made SF a week ago and gave Dasha a fight today. Now if Kenin could come back and show something in SD I'd be so happy.

Bubbly-Ordinary-1097

Go Genie🇨🇦🇨🇦

browwnairbrowwneyes

yep. she's been hitting the ball pretty clean and playing aggressive. serve looks solid too

Bubbly-Ordinary-1097

Yeah glad to see her back on court

Parry winning R1 makes me happy. More ONB!

bigtice

"*I mean, it comes very natural for me. I want to thank my dad because he's the one that taught me. He always gave me like a rhythm, kind of like dance, one-two, so it always stuck in the back of my mind.*" - Parks on her serve

shegotofftheplane

That interviewer was so awkward, when he asked her why she kept pointing up and she said she was thanking god and he said “ok” and moved on lol

Awilltobemerry

He said why were you pointing - "at the ceiling" lol.

JoeshpMR

Happy to see my qualifiers playing well. Parks with a big win, McNally got her R1 win, Tomljanovic won, Pera played well yesterday, let's see what Bouchard can do.

PigsLiveOakland

I hope Jabeur can get a packed crowd later in the week. Would love to see a full house supporting her in a tough match

lefthill

Ooh happy to see Bouchard playing again

[deleted]

Man Sakkari has had "gimmes" since the USO. Parma was there for the taking, and now at least on paper she has an easy matchup Thursday. But if this Parks shows up Maria will have trouble.

electronicwanderer

sorry this interviewer... what?? even he is envious of the alycia parks serve and wants tips for his own game

White_Nothing

Really impressed by Parks. Like damn, her serve and ground strokes are so solid. She's one to watch for sure.

Big_booty_ho

Well I’m a fan! Wow Parks. I hope she can keep this up

shashamaneland

What was up with that handshake at the net? So salty, Karolina.

[deleted]

She just lost in straight sets (and bageled) to a player outside the top 150 as the 4th seed in the biggest tourney her home country hosts. She gets some slack as it's likely one of the lowest point of her tennis year.

shashamaneland

I'm used to seeing accomplished players like Pliskova act more graciously and acknowledge career moments for young opponents.

BelgianBond

Tell that to the umpire whose chair she tried to reduce to lumber.

A-dab

Shame it had to end with a double fault but huge props to Parks, she deserved this win
